Awesome, this is one of my favorite games, it has its problems though, shame Troika shut down after finishing the game.

Hell yeah KTA! One of my all time favorites...Pyrotechnic Axe FTW! It's tragic that Troika shut down.

Bloodlines is a typical Troika game...fantastic but flawed by being rushed. The part that takes place in the haunted mansion is one of the creepiest levels I've ever played in a game. I'm glad to see the fans keeping the game alive.

You know i adored that game , and will replay it all over again . Even in it's original state , when not crashing , this game still kicks Bioware and Bethesda's asses !

I wish reviewers gave it the same leniency and free passes , when every bethesda games were hella buggy as well , til Fallout 3 ...
hell on 360 it might have succeeded

What's sad is i wont see a rpg again of that same caliber since Troika closed .
I'm still having hope thought for the "World of Darkness" mmo , from EVE online's creator ,based on White Wolf's licenses such as Vampire and Werewolf .

Troika and Black Isle were the best. But since people prefer mediocrity we are now stuck with Bioware and Bethesda.

Such is the sad history of gamming. At least Obsidian is still alive...for now.

I say meh to Obsidian .. so far they're only bioware's sloppy shadow and seconds .
What have they done so far ? Neverwinter nights 2 ? Ok it was better than the first , but only because the first had crappy solo campaigns and "only" a good editor and multi .
And Kotor 2 ? still good but still inferior to the mind blowing first game , and using the same unstable and buggy engine years after ?

They havent done any bad game yet , but they're a far cry from the Black isle era .

Thanks god we had the Witcher , and thank god Dragon Age might not be bad , despite its ugly design ...

I hope Obsidian doesn't go anywhere. You don't hear much about them, but it would be a sad day when they close. I loved Kotor2 and Neverwinter Nights 2. Both are really well done. The new game they are working on now looks good.

Baka-akaB

Obsidian also worked with Bioware on Kotor 1 just didn't really get reconized for it.

4.3 - That's not fair.
BioWare and Bethesda make great games, and it's unfair to pit them against the legend of your nostalgia. Just because Fallout 3 wasn't as great as you hoped it would be, doesn't make it mediocre. It's an amazing game, just not AS amazing as the original incarnations. S***, Black Isle made some stinkers too, remember how disappointing Tactics was?

"And Kotor 2 ? still good but still inferior to the mind blowing first game , and using the same unstable and buggy engine years after ?"

You have to remind yourself that KOTOR 2 was done on one year because Obsidian was not allowed more time. KOTOR 1, by Bioware, took far more than that. Obsidian deserves better chances.

I liked Fallout 3, make no mistakes. Sure it doens't live up to the originals, but it is a damn good game. In fact it's the only Beth game I liked so far. I was never a fan of the Elder Scroll series. But Oblivion sucked in my opinion. And if you take Fallout, Bethesda's games are getting stale.

I didn't play Tactics, so I can't comment. But BI did Fallout 1 and 2 PLUS Planescape Torment. 3 of the best RPGs ever made right there and unsurpassed in writting quality to this day. Plus they also did Icewind Dale 1 and 2, very good games in their own right. In my opinion that portfolio is better than Bioware and Bethesda combined.

As for Bioware, the writting is better than Bethesda, but it really isn't anything special. It just APPEARS to be special because the writting quality is far worse in 99% of all games. I also dislike their settings, storylines, etc. I'm tired of the same old Elves n' Dwarves crap. There's far more to fantasy than that.

I also find it amusing that CD Project did a far better game in terms of appeal and choices-consequences with their first game ever (The Witcher) than anything Bioware has ever done to this date.

But anyway, enough rant. Enjoy the games!

4.5 - Woah woah woah...
Bioware certainly aren't the guilty party when it comes to playing out the medieval fantasy setting. I mean, of their last 4 games, only 1 of them was classic Tolkien (AND it was a DnD game for crying out loud!). The other three were Star Wars, Ancient China, and an original sci-fi. But maybe you meant to refer to Bethesda. In which case, fine, but they DID make Fallout :P

Now I can't argue that the Fallouts and Torment are the greatest CRPGs ever, but let's not forget the awesomeness that is Bloodlines and Arcanum (also made by the same people, so further proving that only they understand the true nature of greatness). And I thought Oblivion was an amazing experience personally. I will never forget the first time I walked out of that sewer and saw the world outside. It was amazing! It was like the videogame equivalent of Socrates' cave allegory. But we don't all have to agree on everything.

Now the Witcher... There's a game I really want to enjoy, but I have to be honest. I HATE the actual gameplay. It is literally like playing a single-player MMO. Everything else about it is fantastic, but I find it extremely painful to have to "grind mobs", especially by myself. I think I will try it again, but put it on the easiest difficulty so I can get through the tedium of the combat as fast as humanly possible, and get on with the good bits. At least someone out there is still trying to make a decent RPG. *shrug*

(PS: Last bubble for me, so I can't reply to anything further. Maybe I should stop being rude to stupid people... Nah.)

Thank you for this article. I've always had a special place in my heart for the old Black Isle team and their work, and this gives me a reason to go back and play VtMB again. For those of you who enjoy this game and games like it, there's a mod for fallout 2 called the megamod. Fixes tons of stuff, and also adds a pile of quests and areas that were planned, but didn't make it into the final release.

@ At adversary : i refered bethesda works before fallout 3 .
And in bioware's case it's more than fair to pit them against their past game when unlike Fallout 3 , it's not a total reinvention of a franchise ...

As an ex , how is it even justifiable to have a game as short as Mass effect given your past games ? Greed plus trilogy envy breaking down a game into 3 probably short parts + dlcs ?

5.2 - Well...
Mass Effect was only short if you devoted all of your energy to forwarding the storyline. If that's what you really care about I would recommend a JRPG. Very long and frequently good stories in that genre. Also, Mass Effect is doing something that is previously unheard of in console RPGs, which is that the world is supposedly going to remain persistent between entries in the trilogy. I don't know about you, but I find that to be extremely exciting. Furthermore, while I greatly appreciated KoToR and JE, their quality and production values were far less than the opus of Mass Effect. I can recall dozens of times I chose to just read the dialogue rather than listen to it because of the tedium of having to watch emotionless characters stare blankly at each other and wave their arms around in unnatural ways. Unfortunately the care that went into making Mass Effect a work of great quality took away from the effort that might have gone into quantity. Fair trade in my mind. But I digress, I don't really care to argue that Mass Effect is good, because I consider it a given. (Also, ever notice how VATS is an awful lot like the Mass Effect combat system?)

As for Bethesda, they were pioneers of the sandbox RPG, and without them, Fallout may have never existed (and Fallout 3 DEFINITELY wouldn't exist). I'm not entirely positive, but Arena may very well have been the first CRPG ever to have even the semblance of free will... No... Ultima probably beat them to it, but still, the Elder Scrolls is a fantastic series and the flagship title of the Western CRPG movement. Oblivion made mainstream gamers give a s*** about Fallout. Remember that before you go off the handle bashing them.

And lastly, my reply was really not directed at you. I was replying to the parent thread by Gorgon, but whatever, I can spare one of my four bubbles for you :P

This game is awesome. I happen to work at Activision with somebody who happen to QA this game and he happen to have a copy of the design DOCs for this game. Put it this way, had there been a good amount of money backing this title instead of what they actually had to work with this game would've have set the bar so high we'd still be asking "who will kill the Vampire?" simply amazing what they were able to pull off with so little backing.
