Lara Faces "Family-Friendly" Redesign

Edge writes: "Eidos is suggesting that the modern videogame icon Lara Croft may undergo a 'family friendly' redesign.

The publisher's suggestions have come forward as the recent release of Tomb Raider: Underworld missed sales expectations by some £20m, while developer Crystal Dynamics has been subjected to layoffs to focus the team's output to the core IP.

It is suspected that Lara's popularity – as a character – is fading particularly in the US. And, as the commercial success of all Tomb Raider games have always had a degree of dependence on Lara's image, this may prompt a fresh face for the heroine in her next title."

exactly, the game doesn't sell because it is outdated, Uncharted does everything better. Better graphics, better story, better characters, better art style, better voice acting, better gameplay.

As far as I'm concerned, Lara Croft died after Tomb Raider 2. The games after that, that I played, weren't that great.

This is one of those franchises that just needs to end. Now.

Yeah, i agree. After Tomb Raider II, everything turned to crap.

Back in the PS1 days, the exploding Lara code was hilarious!

4 - Tomb Raider
sold around 1.5 million how is it not selling well? the only problem is either:

1. because of economics: Eidos told its shareholders it would sell more than it did which they should have just projected 1 million of sales and gotten a stock increase instead of overinflating sales numbers and getting a stock decrease.

2. Other parts of Eidos have not sold well and its really not tomb raider's fault and this article is full of it and wants hits and or out of material.

They should add an extra game mechanic where you have bicycle pump to inflate your boobs for those 'hard-to-reach' spots in the game.

So....Laura is going to go from super hottie to plain jane? Or are they just talking about cleavage? The article didn't answer any which way. Got to love speculation...however, Tomb Raider didn't exactly scream out quality design to me. Personally, I'd rather play Uncharted with a hot side kick than Ms. Laura GILF...shes gettin old.

I would say that a reboot is in order, however Eidos shouldn't alienate the fans. More cleavage and unlockable bra less skin wouldn't be bad ;-P

On a serious note, Tomb Raider can't compete with its next closest rival. Its predominately the reason the series feels so stale in comparison.

Eidos must think they can make Lara family friendly for the same reason Disney keeps hiring all those porn actresses...

14 - It seems like a natural step...
Throughout the years, it seems that Lara Croft's character image has been becoming less of a 12-year-old's wet dream, and much more of an evolving human in gaming.

If you look at the first Tomb Raider, it's obvious what the developers focused on a ton. The gameplay was fine, but we all know why the game sold so well.

But through the many games she has had, I think we're all starting to see a big change in the focus of her character. With these last two games especially, she's becoming less busty, and more realistic, as well as more human.

Giving her a "family-friendly" image, as strange as that sounds, may actually be the natural next step.

Just my thoughts on it, anyways.

I bought this game for my girlfriend on PS3 and although she's really enjoying it and even after playing the game myself I thought it was "OK" in this day and age, ok is not good enough when we see new contenders like Uncharted come in and raise the bar, more effort is needed.

Family orientated is not the way to go. As soon as that happens the actual gamers won't want to know and the Devs have to HOPE that the casual market wants to pick it up. At least if you appeal to your original fans and they are what made the game a success in the first place you've got a better chance of it selling

Re-inflate her bustline (I know that's sad in some peoples eyes but I bet it'll make a difference) make the adventure longer, none of this "Let's cut parts out so we can sell it at a later date" Make the game COMPLETE and if you do decide on DLC make it EXTRA, not something that should have been in the game originally! What this game boils down to is a lack of effort.

Look at your competition and do what it takes to improve upon their better games. If you can't, don't bother at all.

I'm really hating the casual side of this generation, so many companys and Devs believe that casual is the way forward. I think I preferred gaming when you were considered a geek for playing!

Bubbles to you.
Couldn't agree more. Also, Uncharted has really really raised the bar for Lara and she couldnt even come close.
