Warcraft Critic Resigns from FCC Early

Spong Write: She's like Abraham Lincoln you know.

Debra Taylor Tate has resigned from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) - the US government agency charged with "regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable".

Debra who? Yes, we thought you'd ask that. Last year she stated that we might all, "find it alarming that one of the top reasons for college drop-outs in the U.S. is online gaming addiction - such as World of Warcraft - which is played by 11 million individuals worldwide."

Yes, Ms Tate blamed computer game addiction for college drop-out rates. She did so in a speech with no actual facts or studies to back her up. Her resignation speech was almost as revolting as that lack of responsibility - but in more of a nausea inducing manner. Although you can read the full speech here... you might not want to based on the following extract.

"I have tried to bring old fashioned common sense..."

Old fashioned common sense doesn't cut it anymore. Unable to adapt with the times, and you will end up like Ms. Tate or Jack Thompson.

I fail to understand why people continue to use gaming as a scapegoat for.. well.. everything. There are much better/believable scapegoats to be used. Or we, as a nation(s) could start actually taking responsibility for things. *gasp* Yeah, you're right Mr. Thompson and Ms. Tate, why would we ever take responsibility for anything? Lets just shove it off onto gaming!

The FCC is evil. Censorship is somewhat necessary however no game should be banned. I'm not condoning adult rated games, however I would like to see the medium grow in maturity. Games like Heavy Rain use adult/mature themes to great effect. Only a few years ago I thought that I would outgrow games one day (far into the future). However, with the success of the Wii and games as culturally acceptable forms of entertainment (for all ages), I'm not as pessimistic. After all...I'm only a twenty somethin'.
