Live: Mirror's Edge Less Popular Than Its Own Demo

"The demos of Mirror's Edge and Too Human had strong online showings in 2008, but the full versions failed to captivate Xbox Live users in the same way, according to Microsoft's annual rankings of top-played games.

Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb posted the rankings to his blog on Sunday, showing that the Mirror's Edge demo was the 12th most popular game for Xbox Live members. Its full-game counterpart was nowhere to be seen on the top 20 list."

Durrrr..... demos are free and Mirrors Edge was over hyped.

Either they didn't like what the demo showed or they didnt think it warrants £40 for the full game. But it doesnt surprise me one bit that a demo can be more popular than actual retail.

1.1 - Exactly
I don't understand why the need of an article even.

In other news from the department of the obvious, on sunny days the sky is blue.

EDIT: It would actually be news somehow if ANY title was more popular at retail than its free demo.

Mirror's edge I would give a 7/10. It had it's moments, but halfway through the game it was missing... something... And the cheezy esurance cutscenes weren't that great.

When they showed the first trailer I was thinking "oh god, why first-person". Then I played the demo and it blew my mind. I just don't have the money or else I would've bought it. Well actually I'm kinda cheap so I'm waiting for it to drop the price. I hear it's really short and almost no replay value, so I'm not sure it's worth the 60$.

1.6 - The new reality is...
Single player games just don't feel worth the money!

I (and I suppose you too) would rather pay $60 for a game with a good single player and multiplayer mode that can provide me with countless hours of gameplay for my money, than to buy a game that just has a single player mode and some BS time trials.

I think single player games should cost less cause they give you less. $40-$50 is a good range for them!

Games like MGS 4, CoD 4, LBP, Gears 2, etc. can make you feel like the price is worth it for the amount of content you get. But you buy Mirrors edge or something like that... you play it once and may never play it again... a.k.a. waste of money in a gamers eyes!

That's just how I see it anyway! If Mirrors edge was $40, I bet it would have sold alot more than it did!

Well, yeah, it's somewhat obvious. Except that it's not the case for most of the other games on the top 20 list.

Games without multi-player these days don't sell well at all, some exceptions of course Bioshock, Fallout 3(Fallout is longer than games with some multi-players). Prince of Persia, Dead Space didn't sell well at all despite getting great reviews.

Dead Space actually sold pretty well. Especially if you take into account that it's a new ip and that it was a crazy holiday season

I loved the Mirrors Edge demo, but after reading mixed reviews and people complaining about the game being short, I decided to rent it instead.

I was also caught out by the Pure demo. The demo was gorgeous, but after buying the full game I realized that there was only six tracks. To be fair though, they was very high quality tracks.

Yeah, lol that's the point of a demo. To get people to try things out, if they don't like it, they won't buy it.

surely this happens with most demos?? i mean they're there and free for ppl to download so even any1 not interested in the game, if they fancy something to play they might just download some demo's and have a look. i downloaded the demo, thought it was pretty gd but felt the full game would be repetitive so didn't buy but borrowed off a mate instead and am glad i didn't buy the full game.

Oh course a demo is going to do better than a real game. A demo is FREE! so people try out demos even if they know they'd never buy the game. I do it all the time. I play it once or twice and delete it. Demos can make or break a game and this just shows it.

9 - I liked the demo
There were just too many other games out at the same time, il buy it when it drops in price. I bought Fable, Fallout, Prince of Persia and Gears of War 2 and I still want to buy Little Big Planet, Resistance, World at War and Dead Space too! How is anyone supposed to afford all of those let alone play and complete them.

lol i guess im one of the few that actually enjoyed the game...it was such a nice change to see a game do what mirrors edge did...amongst all the shooters and all that stuff games like littlebigplanet, motorstorm and mirrors edge really made my holiday season a lot more relaxing...i loved the fresh take on mirrors edge and im not one of the guys who is all multiplayer this and coop that...i enjoyed the single player and story of mirrors edge...yes it did get frustrating at times but i guess i have a lot of patience because i looked past all that and found a really great game with a great art style...plus the fact that i wanna see developers try to innovate and try new things like DICE did...dont get me wrong i love my shooters and sequels but it would be nice to see more developers take risks and try new things

It's unfortunate to see that ME didn't sell well. I played through the demo several times, still do. I am still going to rent it later though, once I have some free time.

Although I am happy to see developers being innovative like this. Mirrors Edge was a really unique experience. I just hope that their next product sells better.

12 - I'll definately end up buying the game...
... but the short single-player, the announcement of DLC-milking, and the 60 euro price-tag, has made me put it on hold for now. They should have just released this for 30-40 euros or something.

Not every new game is automatically worth 60 euro!

If there is a game coming out that dosn't have a demo out as well, remain suspect guys cause the game most likely sucks.

The demo was short, so it was exciting and something new. The entire game is like playing the demo 20X in a row. After the first few chapters I began to think "Really, more running and jumping to buildings?" She should just get a metro-card.

Demos for games tend to be more popular than their retail versions, still, somehow I hoped Mirror's Edge would be the exception.

20 - i looved it
play it on hard without using guns. once you get good at the different disarm/disable moves, it's really quite cool. i loved it anyway, it's too bad more people weren't inspired by its originality.

I enjoyed ME thoroughly. I played through the story, then i followed it with the speed runs, after i finished the speed runs i blasted through the main campaign again on hard, which i thought was a blast. then i spent about 4 days doing the Time trials and racing the leaderboard ghosts. I had alot of playtime with this game. It doesn't shine through it's main campaign, though it does through it's speed runs and Time trials i felt.

Exactly how i feel. I'm stuck on the speedrun of JackKnife because i die at least once towards the end when you have to get out of the drain. I liked the main campaign alot though as well. Like the train station level and the chase sections. Amazing was what they were. But not much people gave it a chance unfortunately. Under rated game for sure.

Well put Dark General.

Speedruns were the toughest i think, i spent 3-4+ hours on each easily, it has to be damn near perfect >.< And Jacknife was one of the toughest of them.
