Ports and Expansions Killed Off F.E.A.R. Fans

Monolith's Dave Matthews, primary art lead on F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, has told CVG that F.E.A.R. expansions and console ports have likely cost the series some fans.

TimeGate Studios' F.E.A.R. expansions Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate received lukewarm critical receptions, while Day 1 Studios' PS3 and 360 ports of F.E.A.R. didn't quite match up to Monolith's original PC version.

1 - Pretty much
The console versions were terrible, especially the PS3 version. This game needs to stay on PC's where it can take advantage of the technology.

You should have got the 360 version, it didn't run at 10fps like the PS3 version. FEAR 2 will probably come out the same, with it's PC (PC/Windows/Microsoft) and 360 (Microsoft) counterparts running much better. It will probably be a "Games for Windows" game, so you will probably need a good PC running (Microsoft) Windows XP or Windows Vista.

1.2 - Are you kidding me? Stick with the PC version.
Both the PS3 and 360 ports sucked.

Yeah, PC is what this series was designed for. The console ports were just afterthoughts trying to take advantage of the console market.

1.4 - The people who care about "Games for Windows" are likely on a console anyways.
Personally, I consider the "Game for Windows" logo to be a negative, but that doesn't stop me from buying them if they're not loaded down with crap.

I doubt MS will make much money off the PC version of the game. Every PC gamer has their OS already. For every person who buys a new copy of Windows, two people will obtain a "free" version.

Wow you don't ay Matthews.

The game should have ended with the first one... the ending was brilliant, it didnt need to continue in any form.

Why not KZ? Really, contrary to how the Media acted over it (First hyping it as the Halo killer *EGM* then going all apeshit over it when they felt it didnt do it) Tech issues aside (Lets face it, GG was a little over ambitous with KZ and the PS2) the game was great imo... had tons of fun with the offline multiplayer (KZ1 had computer bots for offline, so me and my friend could fight against 14 bots) and the Online portion was just as good too. KZ1 had a Rank system, Clan support options (Stuff that other FPS's didnt get with until THIS generation of gaming)... The main (And mostly only reason of why KZ1 was semi bad) was that the PS2 wasnt powerful enough for it... and the Sniper sucked balls... Why people continue to think GG must prove themselves (Even after releasing the great KZ:L on the PSP) i will never understand...

The first FEAR had subtitles: English Subtitles anyways. I know cause I used them for every FEAR game.

I didn't think the first game was that great anyway, so there's really no chance of me playing the new one.

As a FEAR Fan, I disagree with this article. The ports isn't what killed FEAR. It was Perseus Mandate: Gawd-awful expansion and the fact that we've been waiting since '06 for a proper sequel after the more proper expansion Extraction point. When FEAR 2 drops for the PC: the fans will come back. Console ports be damned.

In terms of the expansions for me the first one Extraction Point was fantastic since it felt like a natural extension of the first game it improved in almost every area and was insanely scary....then we have the sorry attempt of a quick cash in Perseus Mandate which was super short, had a confusing and clumsy design and added almost nothing apart from having several plot contradictions -_-

the first F.E.A.R was good, the expansions sucked because it wasn't made by the same people, and really they are going to have nothing to do with the actual story with the sequel comes out. I own it on PC, I'm sure the console versions were terrible, but I plan on keeping this game on PC with the Project Origin comes out.

10 - Yeah, they were god-awful ports. Especially the PS3 version.
I know I'm staying away from the Half Life series after getting BURNED by The Orange Box. Lag-fest/Glitch-fest. Portal was the only good part of the package, and even that had issues with the Quicksave feature. I used it during the final boss battle, only to find out that when i respawned there wasn't enough time on the clock for me to actually defeat the boss.

Had to restart the entire Portal Game.

Valve needs to start playing SNES games and discover a little something called CHECKPOINTS.

Nothing to do with hardware.

And the only reason the 360 version ran better is because of the same nature as pc's.

i.e, 3 standard cores.

Most early ports only used the 1 core of the ps3, and did not touch the spu's.

Trust me on this, using most of the spu's. Fear would have looked and run amazing. Quick ports win you nothing.

Either way, With KZ2 on the way feb. Will anyone care?

I know PS3 gamers won't.

FEAR is a much more high class shooter gameplay wise, it's not slow and automated, it's fast, tense, and brutal.

I think a lot of it was just because the game was designed around extremely tense twitchy combat. The graphics don't matter as much as that. Hard to really capture that feeling and fluidity with a controller, that and games like that just aren't as popular with consoles audiences and console game critics.
