GTA IV Drops Out Of Top 10 In Sales After One Week

The PC port of Grand Theft Auto debuted at #7 on NPD's sales report for the first week of December. Now NPD has released the report for the second week of December that shows GTA IV has dropped off the top ten list entirely.

I guess thats what you get when you make such a poor port + DRM

I was gonna buy this but after seeing the benchmarks and reading the DRM horror stories i decided not to

It sold a bucketload on the consoles as well, I'm sure most people played it on them in these last 8 months and decided it wasn't worth getting. Not good for Rockstar tho who will have to consider whether to port GTA's to PC in the future...

I was actually holding out for the PC version because you can do a lot more with it. However the amount of bugs and DRM have made me decide to wait a little while on it. Maybe get Saints Row 2 instead.

PC versions of GTA games have been awful since 3 as far as I am aware. San Andreas didn't run that well on my computer which is able to run Crysis, thankfully disabling directsound solved the problem somewhat. But this meant that all of the lipsync was off with the characters by up to 10 seconds. I didn't know what was going on in some scenes because of this.

It doesn't help that word got out very quickly that the game has very high system requirements and even then it was having major issues with a considerable number of people. I know I was going to buy it a few days after release but all the issues/drm made me stop. I'll get it when I upgrade or if I find it cheap.

10 - NPD sales are meaningless.
The NPD system is antiquated and shouldn't be used to measure the success of a game's sales. Not only does it not take into account digital distributors like STEAM (which IV was released on, and is on the "top sellers" list), it doesn't even count online retailers like Amazon.com or any other online sales.
At this point I think we can be pretty sure that the majority of video game sales (especially for a game this well known) don't come from people waltzing into a store and picking the box up off of a shelf.
NPD might still be an accurate measurement of the sales of women's hats or of juice boxes, but it doesn't work for video games.

The number of sales might end up looking lower on an NPD chart but games' relative sales (x game sold less than y, y games sold more than z) should be about the same. Many of the other games on this week's top 10 list (fallout 3, left 4 dead, world at war, and Spore) are now on Steam too. I don't think people are particularly more likely to buy GTA IV than these games on Steam so that would skew all of their figures to more or less the same extent, wouldn't it?
