Spore On Steam Has No SecuROM

Earlier today Valve announced that EA was bringing several of its games to Steam. That's nice news by itself but there's a more subtle side effect: you can now buy Spore without having to deal with SecuROM.

Agreed. Steam is the golden standard for digital distribution now. The source of many impulse purchases for me as well.

Ah, I grabbed that off Steam on a whim a couple months back. It's a classic, though pretty damn buggy.

So whats the lesson?

If you don't like what a game company is doing, pirate the crap out of their game until they change their ways ;)

Securom = Steam
When are people gonna get it? Both are the same online authorization bs. Yet they will bash one and praise the other.

wth are you talking about? if they are one in the same then why does Crysis, on Steam, also use SecuRom? u failed.

Steam is a form of DRM. but its DRM that is far superior to any other out on the market today.

For the PC market to thrive again, publishers have to use Steam, end of story. Steam is an amazing platform when used.

Indeed. Steam is what will secure all and keep them going. With their awesome deals, I can't see what's any better. Everytime a weekend comes up, I always see what deals they have. I've bought many already, and they're always good deals. Most of the times 50% or more off.

Not needing a CD in the drive is another win for Steam.

3.7 - lol.
And the steam fanboys come for the attack, not surprised. So many uneducated people.
"There's no install limits on Steam. " There is in crysis warhead. Some securom games took the limits off anyways(like bioshock) and for the ones still with limits, there's de-authorization tools to take them away(example: http://www.spore.com/patch/... )

"Not needing a CD in the drive is another win for Steam. " Don't need a cd for securom games either.

"Steam is what will secure all and keep them going." Like all the other drms, steam is not secure. Steam games are easily pirated like all the others.

Securom, Steam and any other form of online authorization drm are crap and need to stop already.

3.9 - No, the guy is making some good points...
...and you're in here basically trolling with comebacks that don't even have a point to them or say anything that actually disputes anything he just said.

All you want him to do is to conform with your viewpoint, which I see a ton of Valve fanboys try to do. They can't seem to handle ANY criticism on ANYTHING Valve does, so they berate and insult the person that made the criticism. God forbid someone talks bad about anything they do, and to make things worse, some of you use the most immature and inhumane of ways to sound off against those that criticize them. Please, Valve developers are only human and they error, as well. They will have criticisms. GET! OVER! IT!

Yeah, Steam is just another way to impose DRM. They can also limit you though EULAs and stuff like that, and since you need to have Steam installed to run it online just as everything else that USES Steam (and Spore is all about online interaction), they can really have a field day if they wanted to. They would know if it was another computer, they would know if you have it illegally (or think that when you're really not), and God knows what else.

This guy has some really good points and all you're doing is trolling because, to you, Valve can never be criticized. Be quiet for a few moments and just LISTEN to what he's saying, and then try to come up with some good counterpoints to make us all believe that we're all grown ups here.

Actually, no, the guy said Steam is the same as SecuROM, but it is not. People just have a bug up their ass about any time of copyright protection and fail to realize that, you know, games might need some.

@dimeford: Really wasn't what he meant, and there ARE other issues with Steam (like, it's not as user friendly as some would LIKE it to be).

@solar: "hey look! darkpower is back to b!tch about Valve. what do you know!"

And you're in here giving two sh!ts that anyone in here IS "b!tching". Why?

"how ya doing buddy!"

Until you started trolling, absolutely perfect.

"me and others criticize Valve all the time buddy, check their forums. ;)"

Then come onto the N4G site to see you attack EVERYONE? And find out what that ratio is and what you're criticizing them FOR? Hmm..?

"wow, i guess we defend Valve just like say, i dunno, 75% of the ppl on this site attack everyone for saying anything critical of the ps3."

Whatever, dude. It IS somewhat unfair that you make that comment because you're really not caring about what that situation is, and if you've been ON this site for the past month, which you would've been if you caught some of my comments and stories, then you would've SEEN why some people would be upset about the PS3 hate stories posted on this site, once a day, saying the same damn thing the story before it said. Or maybe you're looking for a cheap shot against me.

Oh, and is it me, or should you have replaced "ps3" with "360" to make that quote CORRECT?

Of course there's no SecuRom. Steam IS DRM too.
