Rumour: StarCraft 2 Release Date: Q1 2009?

StarCraftWire.net has come across a printout of "Upcoming Games Releases in Singapore" for the next few months, and it shows StarCraft 2 to have a date set for a 1st quarter release in 2009.

Considering what we know so far, this is not an impossibility in fact, and the fact that several other titles are under "To Be Decided" (TBD) status of this Singapore-specific release schedule would imply that it's not the standard type of print, where retailers just set a date so they can add it to their systems.

2 - To me: unlikely
They still haven't even put this thing out for beta - I don't see how they could have it on the shelves in the first quarter.

I agree. I would've heard about a closed beta but nothing. There is no chance!

Well, we are going to see some info on the beta quite soon anyway, I think...

Considering they split up the game to three officially means they can focus their efforts more. I think they said months back they focus on SP, which is the main thing,. and the Battle.net team is completely separate...

That's true. Even more reason why it's unlikely

there may actually not be a beta this time around

They've already announced that their entire division is testing the game on a regular basis inhouse, and they've been constantly letting people play at many events Blizzcon, Dreamhack, etc. This could have already been an informal, unannounced beta essentially.

The thing is, what they really need to do is stress test battle.net 2.0.

Could it just be wishful thinking, like all the retailers that said Wrath of the Lich King would come out this summer?

That is true, but it's according to this article something completely different.

Retailers set an arbitrary date so that they have a date. They can't set "TBD" like on this document. They need a date som people can preorder, while this doesn't seem to be such an occasion here.

Potentially really good news.

6.2 - ya but...
summer wasnt THAT far off from actual release right? I think the end of Q1 isnt an impossibility, or maybe early Q2, but the thing is there is no way Blizzard has released info on release date unless they are 100 percent positive and this doesnt sound 100 percent

At best we should see a beta in the first quarter of 2009 and not the full game itself.

Well, I think the beta is a given. It's like with Sony Ericsson, their quarter releases are usually on the last day of that quarter ;)

Totally agree.

If we're lucky, we might get the beta around late 1st Q.

Unlikely that they will release in Q1. I guess beta will be late Q1 to early Q2 and release late Q2 to early Q3.

They could always do a "buy the beta, and get the game for free" or something like that, as they did with the release of WoW.

i have faith that we will see starcraft 2 in Q1 2009 if not it will be close to that... its been too long and now they are releasing each campaign race separately so it will likely be soon

I'd be interested to know how much of this list is correct. I know Blizzard has their policy or trademark of "It's not done until it's done", so this may be right and Blizzard knows, or it may be another rumor, though it's quite hard to tell if it is considering the TBD's. Nice find!

14 - Funny
It's funny how you all are pointing fingers and claiming that the game definitely is or is not coming out in the first quarter. The truth of the matter is that no one knows anything about the release date, so the people who are so sure it's not coming out in the first quarter are being just as speculative as those who believe it will.

A word of advice, however... don't trust a release date until the game is in your hands.
