Wheelman director criticises sandbox gaming

Wheelman creative director Simon Woodroffe has told VideoGamer.com that he thinks sandbox gaming elements such as bowling and dating in Grand Theft Auto IV are boring and not developed enough to warrant replaying.

"Yeah, there are elements of GTA in the game - and there are certainly elements of Burnout. I think our driving, the accessibility and the speed of it... that's more Burnout than GTA. But we've got an open world, a compelling story and a whole bunch of side missions - and those things are all GTA," Woodroffe told VideoGamer.com at a recent London press event. "We don't have a sandbox - you can't go bowling or go on a date. All that stuff is all well and good, but personally it doesn't appeal to me. It seems like a good idea but actually it's quite boring after a while, because in all of those mini-games, the micro-mechanics haven't been developed to a level where you'd want to play them over and over again."

I agree too. The dating part of GTA San Andreas wasn't fun either. It was too much work. You want to do want you want, not what the game makes you do. Go ahead and have dating as an option but don't make it part of the real game. I like the part of working out in the gym. And how if you eat too much junk you gain weight. But forcing things on people is actually the opposite of sandbox gaming. It should only be there if the gamer wants to do it.

agree as well. I went bowling once, played dart once (or I actually stopped in the middle of it), played pool once (which was somewhat fun), never tried taxi since I didn't like the driving mechanics and did do a lot of dating/friendship thing, since you would get some cool features like that one girl would heal you and that guy would send a car with gang members but it felt more like work as I forced myself to do it rather than doing it for fun.

So I agree fully and totally! The sidemissions were cool though like top 10 most wanted and the assassin missions and the random people you could meet on the street.

I think the best part was "because in all of those mini-games, the micro-mechanics haven't been developed to a level where you'd want to play them over and over again.".

It's so true. The mini-games in sandbox games should have some sort of depth. And not just sandbox but in any game where there are side mini-games like Fable 2's jobs.

That's the nature of the beast; spread out massively, and all too thin. No one has truly cracked it yet, even after so many attempts.
