Tabula Rasa is over

With NCSoft slowing sinking, teams being laid off, Richard Garriott himself exiting the company, it should come as no surprise that another round of lay-offs have rippled through the company.

Sources tell us that today many of the Tabula Rasa team were let go. The plug has also been pulled on the game, according to both our sources and the official Tabula Rasa website.

It seems that the game didn't accomplished the player population the devs expected.

1.1 - well...
you can play it a full month for free:

"Before we end the service, we'll make Tabula Rasa servers free to play starting on January 10, 2009."

maybe if they notice that the game is massively played in this period of time for free they won't kill it and they keep it without monthly fees.

Hopefully the MMO promised for the PS3 is still on. Is NCSoft going under or just Tabula Rasa?

2.1 - Just Tabula
NCSoft still has Guild Wars, Aion: ToE, and the absolutely gorgeous Blade and Soul (PLEASE bring this to the PS3 NCSoft).

So NCSoft ain't going anywhere (at the moment atleast, I ain't no prophet).

MMO + console= failure.

Like RTS, its a PC genre. These projects tend to crash and burn before they can reach the launch pad. Anyone spot Age of Connan and Huxley for the 360 lately? Yeah, they're not coming, ever. Same goes for this NCSoft PS 3 game and SOE's spy MMO. They can hype and talk about it all they want, but they'll never make it to retail.

"With NCSoft slowing sinking"

How comes i can't find anything in that regard in either source ...

Creative "editing" again ?

Newsposters should spare us their personal opinion and just present the news as is. If they can't do that at least not warped and tinted with made up additions.

On topic: TabulaRasa was a massive failure, nothing more needed to be said about it. Overambitious and weighted down with a figurehead that seem to have lost the connection to the audience targeted. Richard Garriot brought us many good roleplay games, i hold Lord British in high esteem. But Tabula Rasa was an error on his side. Sad for the developers that their project bombed. But better to end it than to throw good money after bad and create yet another mmorpg zombie that won't die even though its not actually alive.

kotaku source:

http://kotaku.com/5095941/t...

after that I checked the original source but NCSoft is not in their best times right now.

4.2 - I agree with Lumbo
it does seem like Kotaku phrased it like it was worse than it really is. When you click on the "NCSoft slowly sinking" link, it talks about how NCS is ditching certain games to make bigger and better games and start focusing on making PS3 games along with the PC games. That doesn't really seem like they are "sinking". It's a good thing.

Teams being laid off I can understand. It happens when your gonna scrap those "lighter" games. Its messed up though.

As for Mr. Garriott leaving, yo, he's gonna be missed. But I don't think him leaving will bring the company to disaster.

Just my opinion though, and I might be completely wrong. It probably does mean NCSoft is going down. I don't know. But come on, it's Kotaku after all :P

And besides, all this is mainly dealing with NCSoft Europe. I don't think it's really effecting NCSoft that much. (NCSoft's HQ is based in S.Korea) And they do have other branches aswell (NC Interactive, NCSoft West, etc)
