Yellow Dog Linux for PS3 Updated

Yellow Dog Linux v6.1 offers an updated Firefox and OpenOffice.org, a vastly improved graphical wireless configuration tool, and the introduction of ps3vram functionality which enables use of PS3 video RAM for temporary storage or swap."

This is the first release of Yellow Dog Linux by new owners, Fixstars. Fixstars acquired Terra Soft Solutions (and their Yellow Dog Linux product) last month.

"YDL v6.1 will be available by the close of today via YDL.net Enhanced accounts purchased at the Fixstars Store " http://us.fixstars.com/stor...

Unless you have an account (paid) you wont be able to DL this yet, expect to wait a few weeks before there is a free download available.

The only reason why I don't have this anymore is because I couldn't watch movies, play my music, browse the web, use MSN Messenger, and burn CD's. If I can then some please tell me how.

2.1 - I just upgraded my HHD....
I made space for Linux, but I just don't know which one is the best one to use. I'd like to browse the net, stream movies, listen to music as well as play roms.

Anybody w/ PS3 linux experience, any help would be appriciated.

2.3 - It's less useful than it was
Now that the XMB supports most video playback I find myself using linux on my ps3 less than I used to, but it is still useful for some things.. and good for linux hobbyists

It will still play more media formats than the XMB too... (though VLC)

You can also play music and films from network shares (streaming off your other computer)

You can't install MSN messenger but there are open source compatible ones that work well (like Pidgin)

You can also play quite a lot of games on it now like DOOM

If you want good net access it also has firefox included and it works well...

To Mr Bun and others undecided about which distro to go with here is some good information to read ~ http://www.ps3forums.com/sh...

I myself had the original Fedora Core 5 on my launch PS3 but when I got my second PS3 from a contest winning I did some research and found YLD 6 to be the all around best.

This is especially so for those who aren't familiar with Linux, plus the installation is SOOO easy! Everything I needed was on the DVD, no additional thumb drive, memory card or anything for the OtherOS installer this combined with the WiFi compatibility and overall great support from Terra Soft (now Fixstars) it's almost a no-brainer.

To give you an idea of how much easier when I originally did my launch PS3 it took over 6 HOURS to install but as with any new tech that is to be expected...the new YDL distro took all of maybe 45 minutes or so!

Nope. Unlike Sony's competitors you can do this with absolute permission to do so. Which is also why they encourage upgrading the PS3's HDD and allow the use of STANDARD USB peripherals! You can also use CD/DVD burners, printers, external HDD's and so much more within Linux....all legitimately & under FULL warranty!

was to much of a hassel for me. I just wanted to download torrents off the web but you have to be pretty savy with linux. And no it does not void warranty, Sony actualy suports this. If you want to download torrents using the PS3 browser go to torrentrelay.com

cool thanks. just thought it weird since most torrents are illegal things right. wouldnt it be kinda like sony is supporting or allowing illegal downloads with their system. and wouldnt they be able to track you easier

Torrents are completely legal. The programs are legal, the torrent files are legal and some of the content is legal. A lot of people just use them for illegal downloading. :P

Anybody used this yet ? "ps3vram", using vram for swap ? That sounds interesting. 20GB/s swap file. That should speed up things quite a bit.
