WoW is the target for The Old Republic, says LucasArts and EA

Both EA and LucasArts have confirmed to VG247 that the target for BioWare's newly announced Star Wars: The Old Republic is to make an MMO with a larger userbase than World or Warcraft.

1 - They have a shot
Star Wars, EA, and BioWare -- they certainly have a better chance of dethroning WoW than any other MMO currently on the market.

No one at either of those companies truly believes they'll stand a chance at touching WoW's userbase even if given 4 years to do it. How about setting some realistic goals?

the only good mmo after wows launch is warhammer : online. and even that game didnt beat wow and wont beat wow in the future.

biggest problem here is starwars in generell, the franchise is milked to the bones, personaly i love starwars but i cant stand anymore games round it.

If the perfect conditions are met then its likely it might have a chance in the long run, but I don't see 10 million people just going to the store and buying this game. US economy is crap and most people don't like owning 10 MMOs and having to pay $20 a month for each of them. They like to own one and pay one fee for the most part.

Just look at all the franchises that tried and failed to take a shot at WoW. We're talking about major hitters in the gaming and pop culture world here.

1. EQ 2: This is the game that WoW was trying to kill. A tall order considering it's the sequel to what many people consider to be the best MMO of all time. WoW ended up destroying this game, a huge shock to the Sony development studio who thought they were untouchable.

2. LOTRO: Lord of the Rings. Its Lord of the freaking Rings people. Backed by three recent blockbusters movies and a fantasy franchise that is know world wide by gamers and none gamers a like, developed by an experienced MMO team that bought Asheron Call to the world...this game was a virtual lock. A great game and it was very successful but WoW subs actually grew after this game came out.

3. Age of Conan: If you love the fantasy genre then you love Conan. This MMO sports a brutal action based combat system, gore, amazing graphics, naked boobies, and glowing reviews by the fans as well as critics...did I mentioned boobies? But it all came crashing down thanks to Failcom. WoW now stand over its shattered corpse in triumpth.

4. WAR: A very well know franchise to PC gamers and table top geeks. In the dice rolling world this franchise is seconded only by Dungeons and Dragons. Branded as a true WoW killer and developed by the Mythic who developed DAoC. If there's anybody who can crank out a good RvR game its these guys....and so far...epic fail. RvR sucks, RvR zones are empty and the game barely feel like a MMO. After the first month Mythic is scrambling to revamp their game and keep subs above 500,000. Not even on the WoW threat radar.

So now its Bioware with a Star Wars MMO hopping to take a shot at WoW? I'm sorry, but its a scifi MMO, it has no chance at taking a shot at WoW. The fact is in the MMO industry, fantasy pwns scifi. At this point getting in the same ring as WoW count as an achievement, never mind taking a shot.
