Honest Gamers: Doom 3 Xbox Retro Review

Gary Hartley writes:

"Doom 3 doesn't want you to fear for you life: they want you to fear that tile falling off the ceiling for the umpteenth time, or jump at the same clip of scary ambient noise being rehashed over and over. It desires your fear, but is only willing to obtain it cheaply. It doesn't wish to work for it."

1 - 2/5?!?
You are kidding me. This is still a great game to boot up on either XBOX or 360 (and even better on PC) I'd give it 4/5.

I still don't get why people had it against Doom3 so much, it wasn't a real sequel but a reboot, if you want classic Doom gameplay with standard graphics on a console go dig out a copy of Serious Sam or Painkiller.
I still can't believe the 'duct tape' mod on PC, half the gameplay was quickly scrambling torch to weapon, I thought it was great and fantastically immersive.

I need to reinstall this game. I bought the PC version at launch, but back then it didn't run too well on the lame PC I had.

5 - The PC version looked...
...brilliant. The Xbox version looked good but the lighting was too pre-rendered compared to the PC version.

Both however suffered from old gameplay mechanics.

6 - 2/5?? My Ass
Doom 3 is one of only 3 regular xbox games that sits on my entertainment center today. It is in my opinion one of the best shooters of all time. The best Doom game for sure. The graphics were amazing for its time, and really still are. This game pulls you in from the opening scene and doesn't let you go till the end. Score should be more like 5/5.

It's funny, when I read Gary's review I kicked up a similar reaction to people here... but I still don't think it's a great game. Style-over-substance and cheap tricks abound... though I do still secretdly disagree with the score at the end.

But that's what Honest Gamers is about, and in response to your question, that's why we still review older games retrospectively as well as providing coverage of new titles. We attempt to form a full database of available releases, review them, and potentially revisit them at a later date to decide whether they are still worthy of people's attention. In this case, practically everyone was in agreement: Doom 3 simply isn't.

However, it's a website that positively encourages its readership to get involved and have its say. Do feel free to register on the website and contribute to the large user reviews section.

Regards,
Lewis @ Honest Gamers
