Lich King Beta Invites Meant to Over-Shadow WAR?

Blizzard has just sent out another wave of beta invites, and this time it seems to be more of a tsunami than a mere splattering. Many more players seem to have received an invite than previous times.

This could merely be because the beta test is coming closer to the end, and Blizzard are giving more players a chance to glimpse the future expansion before the release, or is it for another reason? The expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, isn't expected to be released until November or later, so surely the beta has a couple of months left to run. Could the huge amount of invites be to keep WoW players busy for the launch of one of WoW's most anticipated rival's launches?

Warhammer Online will be released next week on the 18th September, but many WoW players, who until now may have been bored of waiting until the expansion, will now have access to the beta. Good thinking by Blizzard, or merely a coincidence?

This is a very good point. I wonder how well they are doing with trying to minimize WAR-damage? =)

I think openly, they would say they're not doing anything. But now is a really weak time for WoW, with a couple of months until the expansion. Hell, even I would try WAR if I wasn't on the Lich King beta already :P

Personally, I don't think Blizzard is that cheap. But they are a business after all so it's all possible.

If I were them I would do the same. WAR looks promising and it's sure to intrigue a portion of the WoW playerbase, a place on the beta could distract some of those.

6 - yeah I would say so
Blizzard is worrying about their bread and butter right now. In my opinion Warhammer by far has the more fluff and lore to it than wow. So what better way to try and keep their wow from losing too many to war.

They started the Recruit-a-Friend program at the same time as Age of Conan's launch... I can guarantee this isn't a coincidence. And if I had to guess, they'll open the PTR for the "Before the Storm" patch when Warhammer launches.

Regardless, where is my key? I applied the first day the opt-in was announced :(

Oh well.

9 - Been a long time WAR beta player
To be honest I never played WOW, played eq for 7 years. I do know that WAR will really attract the pvp crowd. Those that love the pve aspect of mmo's might not get hooked. This game is "RvR" and it mostly appears to center around PvP.

Don't get me wrong there is PvE, for one public quests (which rock). There are dungeons and such, but it doesn't have the same feel (though maybe i just havn't seen enough of that yet). WoW is more PvE oriented, War is RVR (more pvp) oriented.

I just got my Beta code for Lich King and I am d-loading currently. I quit wow about 9 months ago just cause it got boring. The biggest disappointment I have had with WAR is that I put in for a beta code April '07 and never got an invite.

The WAR devs said they were going to give out more and more codes up until release, but it never came to fruition. I will give wow another shot, but will ultimately pass on WAR.

I've played WoW off and on since release. I've been in WAR beta's also. I can say I will never be going back to WoW after WAR's launch!

Man is it fun!

Of course blizzard is fighting WAR's release ... let's not forget their sudden pve to pvp characters transfert too , something they claimed they wouldnt do .

WAR is a massive concurrent unlike AOC ...
AOC had some big pull , but it couldnt attract the bulk of mmo gamers without a huge pc and it messed up big time anyway with bugs , content , and an even worse PVP than wow .

WAR is actually the closest game to wow in looks and PVE design , while proposing an emphasis on PVP that actually works . So it's the one game capable of harming it , without of course ever bringing it down (unless some nifty miracle happens)
