Would Pirates Have Bought Crysis?

Some argue that piracy isn't terribly detrimental to industries such as music, movies and gaming, because pirates are pirates, and they wouldn't have bought the product anyway.

But Germany-based Crysis developer Crytek doesn't completely agree with that theory.

Asked by Edge if Crysis pirates would have bought the game legally if pirated copies were unavailable, engine business manager Harald Seeley conceded, "Well, clearly not all would have."

2 - Thou shalt not steal.
It's irrelevant if they would have bought it or not.

Piracy is NOT theft. It is wrong, and hurts the industry, but IT IS NOT THEFT.

I know a lot of rich people who are even PROUD to not own a single regularly purchased game. For them, it's some kind of sport. They brag about their latest "catches" and are completely baffled if you tell them that if everyone acted like they did, no more games would be produced.

Strangely enough, these are the same people that look down on independent software...they only like PROFESSIONAL software, but don't realize that the commercial software they are talking about cannot exist without PAYMENT.

4 - No Lie
I downloaded a torrent version of the full game Crysis, not because I wanted the game for free, but because I wanted to test out the final product optimization, with the newest Nvidia graphics drivers. I knew fully in advance that if the game ran well, I would buy it. I installed and tested the game that night.

The following morning I got an email from the entertainment software association, in the email it stated my IP was linked to an illegal download of the game "Crysis" bla bla bla bla, please destroy any copies I may have of the game, and delete it from my HDD. A reply that you have done this is mandatory. (not exactly what the email said, but you get the idea...)

Anyway, I emailed them back saying just this one sentence, "The subject matter stated in your email has been permanently removed from my personal computer." The next day an automatic email was sent to me stating that some files may become hidden, and I should double check and make sure the game is completely removed... -_-

Anyway, one week later, with my newly received paycheck, I bought Crysis, like I originally planned...

4.1 - Who is the pirate,here?
Firstly, try using remote proxies, open DNS and a SSL account. Just a few of the many ways to thwart those invading our privacy!! However,Silentshank, i would like to ask you how the people who sent you an email regarding Crysis, knew of your activities? Personally, i believe they are committing an offence by inspecting or interfering with your internet traffic.Who is the biggest pirate, you for illegal downloads or them for -what should be- illegal interception of your data! Try monitoring your isp's traffic and see if they consider it legal!

5 - lol happened to my cousin /\
never happened to me, if i pirate a game it is usually to test how it runs. i dl'd crysis and found it ran like crap on my laptop :P so i deleted it. I only play some pc games now, and they are all legally purchased on steam, i think that $20 for an awesome game like tf2 is an incredible value, i have also even repurchased css because my friend used hacks on my account and got me perma vac banned O_O Still though it is worth it for the ammount of time i have spent with the games

I downloaded Crysis with the full intention of buying it if I liked it as the demo was too short to tell. And I was right to because after an hour into the game it went down hill and I uninstalled it.

One thing i don't understand, what is the difference between games being traded preowned and games being downloaded? Either way the games company makes no money from the transaction.

7 - I wonder if people understand the following:
Q: Would Pirates Have Bought (enter your own game name here)?

The answer is this... Some would have and some wouldn't have.

I think most people would pay for something they believe is worth the money. There will always be others who just wont ever buy a game. I would hate to see the industry destroyed because of piracy, but I really don't think 1 DL equals a lost purchase. Infact I would be suprised if 100 DLs = 1 lost purchase. Again it differs on the application, price, etc.

I have a "friend" who recently downloaded a game.

His reasoning was that he lost his CD and case, already paid for it and didn't feel like he should have to pay for it again.

Was that illegal? Yeah.

Was it destructive to the industry, technically not.

I don't know why the industry just doesn't say "because it is illegal" rather than "we are losing hand over fist due to pirates"

8 - WARNING: pretentiousness ahead-
The very concept of property, intellectual or real, is the REAL theft. Just ask an Indian.
Also, the fact that these companies are so worried about piracy reinforces the idea that games cannot be art, simply because they are obviously created for the sole purpose of generating a profit, not for the betterment or exploration of the human condition.

I mean no offense by the word "Indian", but that is the word they prefer. Just ask the American Indian Movement.

there's no defending piracy , but there is no defending greedy devs that cries wolf after making a huge amount of money ... lamenting the fact that not everyone was duped into buying a graphical engine .. and blaming it on piracy .

Lets be honest , close to none of them would have bought a game whose main if not only feature is a gorgeously looking game , that doesnt run well on most pcs .

They would have bought it if :

-multiplayer was actually something noteworthy
-It didnt run like a freaking slideshow
-had actually a lenghty INTERESTING solo campaign and story .
- if some of them didnt felt screwed already with farcry 1 ... a game with the same issues and interest

considering crysis was terrible, i cant fault them for not buying it. All people did was pay 50$ for a giant tech demo.
