Crysis Warhead: 4 gigabyte RAM required?

PCGH played Crysis Warhead at the Games Convention. The prerelease version required up to 2190 megabyte RAM for the game alone.

Please, if anybody actually believes that Crysis will REQUIRE 4GB to run you obviously have never used a computer to play games on PC. 2GB is more than enough for the original Crysis, this game runs on the same engine but optimized, so if anything the game will require less.

I can see you needing 4GB for the level editor though. Editing levels with 2GB in Crysis requires you to watch the amount of RAM used or end up crashing the program.

Yup, it is.

"Since the version was a prerelease one, it could be that Crytek did not optimize it yet."

Pre release code is not a good indication of what the final specs will be.

I thought EA/Crytek already released their required specs and they were the same as Crysis.

I thought the game engine of Crysis Warhead was supposed to be a lot more optimised than the first Crysis game

Umm just something I'm wondering here; if the game requires 4GB of RAM, how will say, 85% of the Windows OS owning market play it? The mainstay OS is Windows XP and some also own Vista. But most of those people own a 32-bit version of their OS which will only recognize about 2.75GB of RAM instead of 4GB. Only a 64-bit OS will recognize anything above that. Either Crytek has it's head up it's a$$ or they just really don't care about sales.

*shrugs* EA sent them a prerelease version and knew what hardware they had. as the article points out, "In the graphics options we couldn't change anything and the menu "Advanced” could not be accessed. Therefore we don't know about the exact detail settings. " From the looks of it everything was on high.

Also, the fact that its using more than 2GB RAM doesn't say much.. sometimes if you have more RAM the game will use more. If I crank up all the settings in TF2 for example it can use over 1GB RAM.

To sum up, a very sensationalist article that is assuming way too many things.

8.2 - 2.75gb?
I don't know where you pulled that number from.

A 32-bit operating system can technically address ~4 Gigabytes of system-wide physical memory, where as a 64-bit system is technically able to address ~128 Gigabytes of physical memory.

It would vary from system to system, but if you include a 512 Megabyte video card, any 32-bit system can still make use of an additional 3.5 Gigabytes of system memory.

I pulled that number, as you say ravenguard, from my own system hardware. I have 4GB of RAM using Windows XP Pro 32-bit and the number I see listed for recognized RAM is 2.75GB, and that's with a 512MB video card. I don't know what else in my PC would bring the number below 3.5GB. At POST my PC shows 4GB, but once Windows comes up all I ever see is 2.75GB. That's where I pulled that number from. Using my own PC as a reference, which I put together myself, it seemed to be truthful. If you get different results than mine, then I openly admit that my results aren't typical.

12 - For one thing
dx9 uses 1/3 more memory than dx10. Second I played the original Crysis and it never used up more than 2 gigs of ram for me and my max ram is 2 gigs on my computer. I highly doubt I'll have problems running warhead with just 2 gigs of ram. Third the more memory you have the more it uses perhaps.

20 - Holy...
Is the Cry Engine finally optimized? NO!

Their showing off Warhead on a badass rig with Core 2 extreme, Geforce GTX 260 and 4 gigs of RAM! But Crytek had the game running at low resolution, in DX9 mode, with V-Sync OFF, no anti-aliasing...?!

Obviously something is to be said when your compensating all those options with such a powerful rig!

FYI, my rig has a Core 2 Duo Conroe E6850, GTS 8800 640mb, 2 gigs of super quick G-Skill. I can run Crysis with medium settings in 1080p,... or if I want a little more eye candy, I can run the the game at 720p with High settings. Both look good, both lag like ****.

This article is strange. How can they even think it will require 4 gig of RAM, when the first one had 1 gig as minimum. Especially when Crytek said this game would be more optimized, I have a hard time to believe this. "Requires 4 gig RAM"..... lawl.
