Sales show Doom 3 was "not bad" - Willits

Doom III designer Tim Willits has said he understands why some people found the first-person shooter disappointing, although he maintains he's very proud of it.

Doom 3 was GREAT... The atmosphere and sounds were amazing, if you didn't like the lighting and the flashlight stuff is because u are not brave enough for this game.

I loved the game. Exactly like what a Doom should have been. Dark. Tight spaced. And lots of monster jumping out at you.

2 - It shouldn't have been part of the Doom series...
It had very little to do with the original Dooms. And as a game it was misguided.

The changing back and forth between flashlight and weapon was the most contrived and stupid game mechanic ever.

The graphics were much too dark and drab. They tried to cash in on the survival horror and asian horror film hype, but it didn't fit with the Doom game universe at all...

Me too, It was not bad ass. I like better the "In hell" add on game to it. But the game it self and story was not that bad.

People also buy those crappy movie games. People also bought E.T., Superman 64 and ShaqFu. Sales are no sign of quality, rather than a lot hype, marketing campaigns, advertisements and brand recognition.

Doom is a widely known series. I'd bet alot of people bought it, because they liked the predecessors.

I don't mean to bash the game. I didn't find it appealing, but I'd say there are a lot games that are worse.

Hmm I own all of the Unreal titles. Yet I haven't played them in months yet spent the past two weeks playing Doom III and ROE again. It was a damn good game. The engine would have powered quite a few titles also but Id never bothered to build a tool kit to make the game engine a licensing franchise.

it was a good game, it just had unrealistic expectations given its pedigree

shame really because some people dismissed it based on it not reaching its hype

I liked Doom 3 better than Quake 4, if that means anything.

I think a lot of people like me bought Doom 3 without waiting for reviews because they were big fans of the Doom series. When such a well known franchise releases a sequel of course it will sell well but that doesn't mean it was a great game, it wasn't even that good. Single player was a little dull, too dark though what you could see looked very very good for its time and still does now.

Multiplay was really poor though, its like iD just couldn't be bothered. As a long time Doom fan having spent hundreds of pounds on long distance phone calls ringing BBS services that ran 4 player Doom games with some special software (before the days of the internet at home) I was looking forward to the more gladitorial aspect of Doom 3. I felt in larger scale games a lot of the time it was the guy who had the best luck where he respawned that won the game. Of course there was skill but if you were lucky enough to spawn near one of the better weapons such as the rocket launcher and happened to have a fight going on nearby you were guaranteed to rack up the points. My memories of Doom 1 and 2 were that it seemed more skillful with just two, three or maybe four players fighting it out in a smaller environment.

Unfortunately Doom 3 multiplayer never took off, maybe it was the lack of dedicated server support or maybe the lack of games modes but Doom multiplayer just died overnight. No real effort got put into Doom 3 from my perspective as a player. Unreal Tournament has long since lead the way as iD seemed to be more content in creating a licenseable engine instead of making the great games they used to make.

again... I agree with you 100%

at the time if you were able to play Doom 3 the way it's meant to be played: on a powerful computer and turing up all the setting, 5.1 surround, and in the dark.... you would have experienced IMO, one of the scariest game ever made, and possibly the scariest, only because it accomplished what i set out to do, scare the sh1t out of you... i have some great memories playing that game.

The fact you had to resort to such vulgarity shows just how weak your argument is. Graphically it was very good as I said but much of the graphics you couldn't actually see and the gameplay...well if you like repetitive monsters jumping out of walls/ceilings then I think your taste in games is about as shallow as it gets. Perfect 10? not even close. It was a technology showpiece but as far as gaming goes it left a lot of players disappointed that the once mighty iD Software had become a one trick pony and had been overtaken by the likes of Valve, Epic and 2K Boston/2K Australia. Epic seem to have been more successful with the licensing of their game engine too.
