The film studio has been in talks with Activision, which pulled the multi-format title as part of its restructuring process, in an attempt to launch the game in 2009.

Well they did own the IP until they sold the rights so activision could publish the game...

I always thought it was a bit mental that Sony Pictures did not leverage its exclusive IP onto the Playstation consoles. I'm sure stuff like Spiderman, James Bond and Underworld could be made into excellent games that would shift Playstations better than the low quality multi platform tat they make now.

I guess its a lot like Stringer says, Sony is not a joined up company yet.

So long as Ghostbusters gets a release then I will be happy!

It's the same as Spiderman though. Sony own the rights to the movies, not games.

Sony are in talks, because they want a game out for the anniversary of the movie, but don't think the PS3 version won't get some exclusive content.

i guess you're right, sony isn't a joined company lol..

@Pirate
erm the owners of the movie (in this case Sony Pictures) gets to decide who is gonna make the game, so they could give the rights to SCE and that would lead to exclusivity for PS brand!

Its such a Sony syndrome though isnt it. Think about it, in recent months Warner Brothers have pledged to spend big bucks on WB interactive entertainment (including making the games to Speed Racer and the upcoming Watchmen movie) to distribute their own games, Disney and Fox are doing much the same I think.

Sony obviously has a massive advantage in this area given the pedigree of the Playstation department and the proven track record of the in house developers but instead they pass stuff off the Activision to make poor tie ins; they don't even seem to stipulate advantageous treatment or special features for PlayStation releases.

Sir Howard Stringer obviously still has a lot of work to do because stuff like that looks like a terrible waste of an advantage Sony carries over its competitors in every field.

Just think, in the near future we could possibly be saying "Ghostbusters: The Game, only available on the PS3!"

This game would barely make its development cost back if its only on one system & the fan base is to big for this game to be on one system. But hey its going to be Sonys lost & this game will suffer the consequences if it becomes a system exclusive & we will not get any more Ghostbusters Game done in this way

All I need is one ghostbuster game. We dont need a rehash, let sony studios take over... optimize it for PS3 and release a kick ass exclusive.

4.2 - Not gonna happen
They have already done the work to make the game Multi plat. If Sony wanted to publish it they would have to remburse Activision for the development cost, which includes the other platforms the game was built for. Like someone said earlier they wouldn't make up the loss if they released it for one platform. What Sony could do is find a publisher for this game (EA, Activision, Ubisoft) and then if the game is really good and sells well then they can buy the studio from Activision and have them develop other movie properties exclusive to Sony Studios.

im not sure if they have to reimburse the games development cost, since the game has been kinda canned, and when a game is canned, the development cost is lost, they can sell the license which gives less/all/more of the games development costs... so technically it could go PS3 (or maybe PS) exclusive..
aside from that, the lead platform for this game is the PS3, which means it'll make it easier for SCE if they buy the rights to it..

4.4 - It is not canned
The game to my understanding isn't canned it is still in development it just doesn't have a publisher. You are right PS3 is the lead platform. Believe me I would like nothing more than for Sony to gain another exclusive, but I think they would have jumped at the chance to publish this if it made finacial sence. Which leads me to believe that they have to pick up the bill on activision's already spent production cost. And with the voice talent and with Ramis writing the script I am sure it would cost a pretty penny.

6 - Interesting.
The developers have already complained that if they were making the title only on the PS3 vs both the PS3 and 360 they could have "twice the activity" on the screen. Perhaps Sony should pick this up, take it exclusive and say "Ok. Show us what you've got."
And to the dude claiming they couldn't do this because of the installed user base. The PS3 has sold almost 6 million consoles this year and sits at approx 14.5 million units total. By the time this game comes out next year they'll be over 20 million PS3 owners. I don't see any problems there.

7 - They should definitely fund/publish this title
'cause it looks really impressive. And it would allow the devs to use the PS3 the way they originally intended (check back on prior interviews).

This could be a possible buy for me if its a PS3 exclusive. It would become a better game as a result.

10 - This will be a PS3 exclusive
I remember reading an article a while back that Activision published and they said that they wished this game wasn't multi-platform because the PS3 version could have twice the objects on 1 screen than the 360 version. Now that Activision/Blizzard dropped this project I think Sony is gonna pick it up and make it exclusive because of the 20th anneversery of the movie. Sony does own the rights to Ghostbusters. i personaaly hope they make another movie too.

Ok guys, the game was never canceled. A buddy of mine works for Threewave Software in Vancouver, they are doing the online aspect of the game. They are still working on it, that is his job. If the game has been canceled he would obviously know about it.
