'Diablo III' Color Controversy Update: Game Used To Be Darker, Dev Says 'There's No Going Back Now'

Multiplayer's Tracey John reports:

"Don't like "Diablo III"'s colorful art direction? Too bad. We were told today that it's not going anywhere.

Lead "Diablo III" designer Jay Wilson told me that even though 52,000 "Diablo" fans have signed a petition asking Blizzard to return to the darker, more gothic look of the old "Diablo" games, the new, vibrant art style is here to stay."

Good. Because I like the look of Diablo 3 a lot. I think it looks like a great game, and I am sick of people complaining about it.

I like what I have seen so far of it so no complains here. However, they should just hurry up and release the damn game already. Everything about Blizzard has been ace so far except their games take forever to come out but then again, Perfection takes a while I guess.

If you really like gray that much you can just turn down the saturation levels on your video card, and let us happily enjoy the spectrum.

4 - I'm stoked
favorite PC button masher ever. I'm even upgrading my PC because of it. I don't care about the colors.

I might not care right now because of the recent Manny Ramirez trade to the Dodgers. Go Blue!

I'm very disappointed... the graphic system looks great, but their artistic style have certainly deviated from the original diablo. I have just started playing diablo 2 again and wow the dark blood stained gothic cathedrals still gives me the same creepiness I felt years and years ago.

In D3, so far from what we've seen, the cathedral architecture is transforming from gothic to fantasy. Green hues emanate from nowhere, and the character models looks of proportion. The engine looks great, but the game have lost its essence.
---> note my points have nothing to do with too bright or colorful (though I would like it darker), which he have addressed in the article, where he said he tried dark and failed. I'm talking about fundamental artistic designs that are not on par to the originals.

Some people keeps saying who cares? Its the gameplay that matters. But why must we lose the feel of the original diablo when it can be so easily brought back? Why can't we have our cake and eat it too?

Oh well, I'm sure this will still be a kick ass game and go on to sell millions, but its just a sad day to see the diablo universe not being made to all that it can be.

Finally: "are we influenced by ‘World of Warcraft’? Of course." fails... this game looks more like WOW then D2

Yeah one of the gaming moments I remember that was just amazing was the atmosphere when you first get into the rogue encampment in D2. It really sets the mood; the rain pouring down, the small group of rogues surrounded by a huge wilderness filled with evil, and of course the music, just made it special IMO. I can see diablo 3 losing that. But we'll see, we haven't played the game yet.

I'm not sure whos the one causing trouble in Diablo 3 unless it's Diablo again..but it seems to make sense for it to be a bit more colorful than the past games. D1 and D2 were plagued by the taint of Diablo and the other prime evils and now that they're dead the taint should be lifting and things should be clearing up. It'd be kind of wierd to slay the prime evils and your world to still look like it belongs in the basement of hell.

12 - i like the colours
but I still think that the character models and enviroment look a bit too cartoony.

I personally think that Dragon Age: origins, has the art style I would've prefered in diablo 3, just in a fixed isometric view.

If you don't like the new way to new Diablo game looks, then don't buy it.

Cry me a river, then build me a bridge and get over it.

As the resident Diablo fanatic at this site, I have to say that although the color scheme looks great for this game, you have to admit that the fanmade edits of screenshots on the petition website had a much more convincing tone to it - they were darker and more honest to the Diablo realm style. Say all you want, but WoW has and will continue to influence the direction of everything Blizzard ever puts out, including artistic design.

This game will kick @$$, no doubt. However, the reason why the artistic design concerns me is because the original Diablo had a very doomed and tragic feel to it. Everything from the background music of the labyrinth to the sound of demons walking around to the low lit and murky corners where enemies waited was disturbing enough to create an aura of suspense. I wish the franchise would retain that element, because that's one of the things that separated it from every other game - high addiction and a convincing level of immersion in Terror, Hatred, and Destruction.

I don't understand fans' complaints, it's not like this is a console game where you can't change the content- no doubt someone sometime down the line will release a Mod which will change the colour/tone of the game...

18.1 - Highly unlikely, considering...
...that the game is online only, thus mods that involve anything to do with changing in-game models, etc., is probably going to be looked down upon.

19 - Pretty much WoW 2.
There's not much left of Diablo.
