IGN's Overall Best of E3 2008 Awards

IGN writes:
"The criteria we use to pick our E3 favorites are simple. With the exception of Best Non-Playable Presentation and Special Achievement in Innovative Design, all "Best of E3" nominees had to be playable on the show floor or at one of its related events. In other words, the game had to be manipulated in real-time and, additionally, could not yet be available for consumer purchase. Because these games are works in progress and not yet complete, winners are chosen based on the quality of the software at this stage, as well as its ultimate potential heading towards its future release. All editors that attended IGN were allowed to vote, and because our teams are split into platform teams, we also compiled system-specific lists in addition to our overall awards."

My issue isn't what they picked per se (final game excluded) but rather the selection criteria. The fact that a multiplatform game was even nominated for PS3 and 360 game of show is a bit ridiculous. What is the point if you are not going to pick the best of exclusives to that platform. By deduction there is a serious error in their thinking. Were they trying not to embarrass a particular platform with poor depth on the exclusives roster?

Fallout 3 was best PS3 and 360 game. It was nominated for best PC game but finished second to Spore. Yet it won game of the show. So what they are telling us is since Spore beat it on the PC yet Fallout 3 won on the consoles the the console versions of Fallout 3 must be superior to the PC version. See what I mean? No logic at all.

"Well it placed tops on two consoles and 2nd on PC." The game isn't running for president. It is either the best game or it is not.

why do you get to stop time and pick a body part at anytime giving you a basically guaranteed shot? And some talk about gears and killzone beinig grey but Damn. its still cool to be able to pick between tp and fp and its depth is amazing but I dont get the big deal.

morganfell, for each console, IGN has a unique team. There is a Playstation team out there that chooses the best PS3 games awards. The Xbox team does it for 360 games. Each category is result of votes from the specific team. PC team chose the Spore over Fallout 3. On PC, that was PC team's vote while 2 different teams chose the best for PS3 and 360.

For overall awards, all teams can vote and thats how F3 got the overall win.

KnaveX, the devs were using cheats in the E3 demo version. In the actual game, each body part has a percetage hit and its pretty small unless your level is pretty high and your character has great skill in Big or Small guns.
As for grey, Fallout is the game that showed this 10 years ago and it has a good excuse. The world was NUKED! Every country, city and town was bombed and burnt in ashes. Less than 0.01 of population survived underground vaults. When they emerged 10 years or so later, not only the world was destroy by nuclear explosions but the nature had taken it back and the dust was everywhere. People became savages in this radiated world.
Fallout 3 takes place 200 years after the explosions and things are far worse...

MK_Red, thanks but I know the way that works. I used to subscribe there as well. The issue is it doesn't change the ill gotten logic they displayed in nominating multiplat games. It doesn't provide any insight to those that are single console owners - I own all 3, but the site is supposed to provide that insight. They do not.

Gametrailers had a different opinion, and gave their "best graphics" award to Killzone 2, does that make ign's opinion any less relevant. Im glad there are more games using PS3 as there lead platform such as Prince of Persia and Mirrors Edge. LBP, Motorstorm, Infamous all look really good too. But No matter what console you own this year there are tons of great games to play this holiday season. I am surprised LBP didn't take any of the awards O well i guess everyone has there opinions.

I'm pretty sure that the game quality won't change regardless, because what was shown was downright terrible. Who cares what they saw. If bethsheda had more impressive stuff, then they would have probably shown it to the public. What are they trying to hide? Same can be said about assasin creed in e3 07. Won all these game of shows, looked like crap in the e3 demo presentattion, got low review scores.

For anyone that is in the game industry then they know that you like to have the AI locked at 6 months but you absolutely wouldn't want to go inside 3 months as it makes the bug hunting in many areas impossible. All I am saying is other than some tweaks do not expect an AI Second Coming.

The facts. The street date is October 7. Back that off 3 weeks for production and shipping. That is September 16. Now back that off 2 weeks for publisher as well as Sony and Microsoft to do their Q/A. That takes us to September 2. Which is less than a month and a half away. Here is the bad news. That crap AI, other than a few tweaks, isn't going to get a hell of a lot better.

I was really excited for Fallout 3 until the E3 demo. The whole game looked bland and boring. The gameplay looked stiff and uninteresting. I feel like the press decided they were going to give this game straight 10s regardless of its quality.

Like most performance sports that are scored. If you fall AT ALL ice skating, you are almost guaranteed no higher than a 3rd place score. Even if you pull off the single craziest trick ever.

Killzone did look great, but there were a few places that were off, and they probably brought it down from what would have been a win.

And they are like the biggest 360 fanboys on the planet, and even they had to say that Killzone was the best looking game at E3. Jesus, even Project Origin looked better than Gears of War 2 did. I prefer to call it Gears 1.5 myself, because it does nothing to really push the envelope compared to games like Resistance 2,, with its massive 60 online.

Speaking of Resistance, I bet I know why people didnt think Resistance looked better than Gears. Its probably because all the fan boys couldnt believe that all of what was shown from R2 was actually in game and not CG. They probably said to themselves that you cant compare the two because all that resistance was showing was CG.

I'm not even going to get in this argument. IGN thinks Gears 2 had best graphics. Whatever; they're opinion. Objectively speaking Killzone 2, inFamous, Crysis, and Mirror's Edge should have been the nominees, with KZ2 bringing home the gold. But whatever. :D

I was looking over the rumored Guitar Hero World Tour setlist and started listening to this song. Been listening to it all day, but I never knew how handy it would become. - resident evil 5 > mirror's edge for best action game

- Left4dead gets a shooter nomination and killzone 2 doesn't

- Gears of war 2 beats killzone 2 AND Crysis for best graphics....ummm...NO

- "rhythm heaven" beats resistance retirbution and castlevania for best handheld game....are they serious?

- IGN's love for prince of persia, it gets overall nomination and best console nomination....i mean the game is looking great but is far from the best games at e3..

also a screw up: they spend nearly all of shaun white's snowboarding discussing the wii but the wii is never mentioned as an available console for the game....

17 - Gears 2 looks good.

But it is far from being the best looking game at E3. Ive seen damn near every trailer, screen shot, preview of almost every game that is coming out, and from that, here is my out take on E3 this year.

1) Watching the trailers from Fallout and actually seeing the gameplay, I learned that Fallout is not even worth a rental. Fallout 3 is easily the most overhyped game at E3.

2) Gears 2 is exactly what Gears 1 should have been. I consider the new game in the series just an update to the first one, and Epic could have saved alot of money on development if they just made a patch. Cmon, how hard is it to turn multiplayer from 4 vs. 4 to 5 vs. 5? Its not like they actually pushed the envelope when they added the moving cover fire mechanic. I still laugh at that one.

3) Microsoft is Acting too much like Nintendo, and going after the casual market instead of making 1st party games. How many studios does microsoft have? Rare? Bungie? Cmon, give me some games that make me wet myself Microsoft,, stop wasting millions of dollars on multiplat games and I bet eventually you could have a game worth bragging about having on your system

4) Sony is not getting enough credit where its due. Sony has done nothing but bleed and sweat and has lost billions of dollars to make AAA titles, but yet Microsoft gets praised for having multiplat games on their system like Fallout and FF 13? If thats not bias in its truest for then I dont know what is?

5) Nintendo is losing its soul to the casual market. Not only did they leave out the hardcore in its presentation, but they brushed off the hardcore by saing that games like animal crossing is hardcore. They got so rich off of the casual market that they forgot how to make good games. They are drowing in their own money.

I could go on and on about this but Im sure this post is long enough. I've pretty much had it talking about all of this stuff that will never get into most of you peoples thick skulls. One more thing though. I actually like IGN, and I can say that Im pretty sure that this list above is actually not the voice of IGN as a whole. If you listen to the podcast like I do, you will see that most of the staff actually is amazed most by Killzone 2 and thought that it was the best game at the show,, by a far margin. But it is what it is. I own both consoles, but at least I got my sanity to go with it. I wish I could say the same about all the fanboys.

I mostly agree with you. I can really say, without a doubt, that Sony has the strongest first party lineup of studios and titles out of the big 3. And I never thought I'd say that, but Nintendo has lost site of their original fanbase and rehashed instead of innovated, even with their own titles.

Here's a hint Ganon, if your minion's weakness is the hookshot, don't put him in the same damn temple to guard the friggin thing. That should mix things up nicely!

When Killzone 2 comes out and smokes every other console game graphically, IGN will look like an idiot for saying Gears 2 looks better. I mean, even the most hardened 360 fanboys KNOW K2 looks better and they actually admit it. Not that it matters anyway, the only opinion I truly care about is my opinion and My opinion is that Killzone 2 looks better than Gears 2. Some people might differ, but that's fine because it's their opinion no matter how obvious it might seem.

Only Xbox 360 provides gamers and developers with a true next generation home entertainment platform where games truly come alive with award winning titles and awe inspiring graphical fidelity.

Gears of War 2's crowning as the King of graphics is well rewarded, with it being the most amazing looking game ever seen by mankind, Only available on the Xbox 360 platform. Killzone 2 has been proven inferior in every way to Gears of War 2, which just proves how much of a garbage developer Guerilla Games is, proving themselves incapable yet again of creating a decent game with flop after flop. I personally look forward to Sony wasting $40 million on a piece of shovelware because of their poorly designed hardware and their arrogance to think a third rate developer could ever challenge the likes of Epic Studio, who have seen that Only Xbox 360 can give them the platform for them to fully realize the creative visions.

Gears of War 2, the greatest shooter ever made, out this November on Xbox 360, it truly is a great year to Jump In

Killzone 2 has good and bad moments graphically, it has great lighting(although GoW2 *now* has simular lighting).

Gears is more solid across the board graphically Killzone has lighting hiding it's textures. The small details are inferior in KZ2 I'm sure sence IGN has spent time playing these games they see this, all we can do is watch video's.

Just one Example: A broken piece of concret in KZ2 will show painted looking cracks and bump-mapped rocks at different heights inside the broken slab, with fat black lines at times.

In Gears 2 the broken concret slab will show the individual rocks with superior bump-mapping with the lighting wraping around the pebbles creating different sheen due to the light reflecting at different angles(Like race tracks in more advanced Race games but more extream.

KZ2 looks good for a PS3 game but people are over reacting blurring the lines between *looks good for a PS3 game* with *it is the best looking game, ever!.

There are things I do like about Killzone 2's looks but I have never agreed that it looks better than gears although KZ2 looks good with its lighting tricks; GOW2 looks like an animated CGI movie at times.
