Indiana Gregg to The Pirate Bay: The Internet Police Are Coming

A little while ago TorrentFreak wrote about the exchange of emails between artist Indiana Gregg and The Pirate Bay. Indiana wanted The Pirate Bay to remove torrents linking to her work, which they refused to do. Now Indiana has a response for The Pirate Bay and file-sharers in general. It doesn't pull many punches.

However, stating opinions as facts will not get this music artist far......

So I am guessing people are downloading her "movies" for free instead of paying for them :-D

2 - Even more interesting than the essay
Are the ridiculous comments posted under the article. What's holding back full regulation is simply manpower. If the legal system can be adjusted to automatically hand out fines in a timely and efficient manner (by the millions) then we'll see file sharing become eliminated in no time.

My co-worker's friend just got arrested and slapped with a several thousand dollar fine for downloading some movies off a torrent site. But how many people actually known anyone that's been fined for file sharing? Pshhh. Not that many. The jail time is what slows the process down though. Massive fines are the way to go.

3 - It's going to be difficult.
PirateBay operates in Sweden, where the laws are different. Greggs cites the DMCA that's only valid in state-side. However Sweden has no such law so technically PirateBay is legally abiding by the law. She can't take PirateBay to court cause then they would have to go by the European Courts, and that could take years to get a verdict, much less a hearing.

It's stealing, but PirateBay is in the good. Hell I didn't even know who she was until this article, and a helpful wiki-page.

4 - To hell with the Pirate bay
Pirates, if they think hard, are thieves, nothing more, nothing less.

Poor girl thinks it's easy to monitor pirating, but I agree with the general sentiment; artist are being hurt by this s***.

Artists are losing money to piracy today more than ever, but if they woke up and realized that media is changing, it wouldn't really be a problem.

Disribution isn't the same today as it was even 5 years ago. The whole recording industry needs to wake up and start looking into new ways to profit from music.

Suing the pirate bay won't accomplish anything, Even if they manage to shut it down, someone new will just step in and take their place. Physical mediums are dead. People need to move on.

4.2 - i got a tip of advice
Do not suck, maybe then artists will finally make money. I mean come on, if piracy was as bad as it really was, every musician would have a day job. The fact is is that although piracy does have a significant impact on their sales, if one is successful in the mainstream, the losses are minuscule in contrast to their profits (as if Lil Wayne went broke when the Carter III kept leaking). So while most artists may have lost out on buying an extra ferrari or that expansion to one of their summer homes, the only ones that complain are the ones that can't sell an album for *****, even if piracy didn't exist.

Sorry Indiana Jon... I mean greg (wtf, worst marketing ploy ever) but you probably suck more then you believe and you'd sell only a few dozen more copies if it weren't for piracy.

Well whether or not it's right or wrong, here's the way I see it: art is once again going to become what it needs to be.

You know how there are musicians on the street that play for money and only get paid based on the goodwill of the people that walk by. Well, that's how it should be. If you like it, you can show the artist some goodwill with your money. You can choose to listen entirely and not pay, and be somewhat of a jackass for doing so, but you're not forced to either way. I think this would lead to much less "commercialization" of art, in all it's forms.

I mean, it's better than paying 20 bucks for an album that sucks. Essentially, by paying 20 bucks before even hearing the album, you have already said to the artist "good job," even if you end up liking only 2 of the 12 songs.

I know it's a bit unrelated to the article but I still think it's a point worth mentioning.

Well she's right. Bottom line, If anyone here was an artist, they would feel the sting. It's all right to say she's an idiot if you can't picture yourself in her shoes. I go to torrent sites to download music, I'm no angel. I only download singles that I like. The reason is that I don't like purchasing albums when I only like a few tracks on it (also the only music I download these days are old skool Hip-hop and Rnb from the 90's that i missed). I've also run out of space to store physical media.

I'm not trying to justify what I do, it is wrong and I'm probably taking money from an artist hand. One solution that I heard a few artists in the UK are trying is not to release physical media at all, but ony releasing their media online for a price.

The government in the UK is already looking at stopping leechers with a new law they are toying with which will hand out HUGE fines. It will probably happen sooner or later.

Maybe they should get rid of all the major torrent sites like Pirate Bay and Torrent Spy and only allow file sharing between a very small number of people e.g only allowing people who send files over their instant messenger service.

Sorry , i gave up the day i couldnt properly use my purchased audio cd on my hi-fi material or the pc player of my choice , just because some morons thought i would be fun to add outdated anti piracy protection . What happened that day ? i cracked the damn cd with some tools , converted everything in mp3... and never bought an album again .

Its the same for digital distribution , if you want us to pay stop the paranoia and punishing actual and potential customers with useless and restritive protection .

I have no idea who this person is, another crappy artist saying the same old same old thing. The music industry is not adapting for one, second, I torrented Feeder's new album, I loved it so much that the same day I bought it.

For the music industry, make some good music then I will buy the damn album, for the most part most of the albums these days have 2-3 good songs then the rest are fillers where it was clear that the band/artist were in a rush or could not be asked to make a great album.

13 - Cost too much
If i could afford all the stuff i want then i wouldnt have to download it. The problem is they count all these torrent downloads as stolen sales not quite. If i cant download her porn im just gonna download somebody elses im not going to buy any. No matter what i am not a sale to these people because i don't think what they are offering is worth the money they ask. Obviously if they have a problem selling their crap then it either sucks or costs too much. I buy all my games and i think most of them are worth every penny but im not about to go out and pay $15 for a cd that has 2 good songs. I buy all my movies if they are out on blue ray because i like to have hd video but if they are not on blue ray then im not buying them because to me dvd's are not worth the price anymore.

Look at the site you're on. I think it's safe to assume we're all gamers here. Even if you're pirating games, you've managed to somehow afford a $400+ console or an even more expensive PC.

Don't get me wrong. I completely agree about the 2 good songs. I'm still waiting for my rebate check for all the crap cds I bought before the internet. Just like most others, I download music, give it a listen, and 99% of the time never ever listen to it again, because it's crap. I'm an avid Tool fan and buy every album they put out. Sure I download the leaked album early, but I always buy the cd because the quality of music earns my dollar.

As for pirates hurting sales... haven't a ton of sales records been broken in the last 8 years since internet pirating became so popular? These aren't inflated numbers like the MPAA puts out. The only thing pirating has done is save me from wasting countless amounts of cash on crap.

16 - Actually
I hate to say this but artists have brought this on themselves. heres a little story.

you just managed to convince your boss to get a week off to let you go see your favourite band live. you spend heaps to travel to the concert and you spent a bit on your tickets, you travel all the way to Australia. your at the concert eagerly waiting to meet the artist you love perform, your super enthusiatic about this trip and can't wait. Then after a while shes an hour late, turns up drunk, does a sh*t job as if she didnt wana be there then buggers off again.

HOW THE F*** DO THEY EXPECT US TO KEEP RESPECTING THEM IF THEY DONT RESPECT US! theres a reason why we download our music, and its not because we're cheap, its cus the music industry have been ripping us off.
