Photo-realistic Crysis?

Almost perfect version of a Crysis Nanosuit. More than 1,000,000 polygones and highres textures.

1.1 - Not photorealistic
Most people can tell that's CG.

Photorealism isn't all about the number of polygons. Lighting and how simple/complex the model is is just as important.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue looks way more photorealistic then these screenshots of Crysis. A lot of that has to do with the fact that cars are a lot easier to model then human beings.

Real time character models ARE CG. you have the terms confused apparently.

CG stands for Computer Generated, and is a shortened version of the acronym CGI, which is Computer Generated Imagery.

I agree. I was going to say that this just goes to show that countless polygons and high res textures do not make something photoreal. It's like they spent all their time on Textures and polys and 10 minutes on lighting - which is absolutely more important.

Guys this is just the character model. I'm sure once the HDR lighting, blur and other FX are implemented. Then it would look more photorealistic. Because the amount of detail is almost comparable to real life.

I've never understood the term Photo-realistic being used in regards to Crysis... Or any game for that matter.

There's no game I've ever seen, that's even come close to it with in-game graphics. Yes, they look amazing by computing standards, but almost real, no.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is very close to photorealistic.

2.3 - Maybe not people...
...but effects like smoke and explosions have got very close to real-life. The smoke in Killzone 2 looks real, it blows in the wind and moves properly. CG people are a whole different kettle of fish, the day we can't distinguish a CG person from a real one is the day we have true virtual reality not just photo-realism.

Some of the vids of GT5P made me think I was watching real cars, I knew I wasn't, but the fact that some doubt was there indicates it's very realistic.

@2.1

Break down the word. PHOTO - REALISTIC.

In a sense, if something is to look photorealistic. Then it would look like realism, that's taken as a photo. Like a picture.

a good render setup and lighting would have made the normal ingame asset nanosuit look way better then this 80's superglos suit :)

polycount dont to realism, its lighting.

Oh.. any game is AGES away from the real world thing. The number of imperfections and random alignment of elements and the minimal differences between things that are suposed to be equal are small parts of what makes reality so much different from gaming.

Yet when you sit in front of a computer/console, your brain adjusts to this "gaming reality" and jaws drop to graphics that are becoming increasingly more accurate in representing real life (in the cases where the game chooses a realistic art direction/style). And yes, games like MGS4 / COD4 / GeOW / Crysis / Assasins creed / GT5P (add your fav looking title here) All look amazing when staring at the TV and being immersed in that gaming world.

But just take the eyes off the screen for a second and look just at your hand (not at a cityscape or out through the window to the street and the cars parked) just your hand... look at all those tiny hairs, the veins under the skin, skin imperfections... Look at the controller , look at the curves it has no jaggies, no polys there... Games are not even close to that... Games offer a nice imitation which your brain chooses to make feel much more real, that´s all. Even modern CGI is still struggling to reach realism.

But harsh criticism aside... those models look AMAZING, I can´t picture that in real time... but who knows, maybe the next generation of graphics cards can handle a dozen of those on screen in a jungle-like environment :) HOPE SO!!!

9.1 - Spot on!
Nothing in the gaming world can match reality yet. I would say the Motion Capture technology (e.g in Heavenly Sword, Uncharted and best of all Killzone 2) helps to further trick the brain because the characters move realistically. Getting game characters to look real is almost impossible due to the imperfections of skin, the difficulty of texturing veins and curves and removing the jaggies and I could go on about the difficulty of realistic facial features but I won't because it'll bore a lot of people lol.

I feel the moment we reach the point when we can't distinguish gaming from reality is the moment when we have to think long and hard about what's in a game and what it could make people think (or do...).

Imagine playing a game that looked just like a HD movie, absolutely real but you were in control of one of the characters, it'd be awesome of course but wouldn't it be a bit weird to a degree?

Yeah i'd say that by the end of the 9th, probably early 10th generation of games will look pretty realistic

Photo-realistic games would be so expensive to make. Maybe they *could* do it in like 10 years, the other question is if they want to do that and if it pays of.

That is FAR from being photo-realistic.
Silent Hill 2 had more real looking characters...the face at least.

I'd have to say that Crysis came pretty close to photo realistic, without this model..Now if I could just get over 70fps @ max settings with 8xMSaa, I would be very happy..
