Bethesda Mum on Fallout 3 DLC Exclusivity

At the E3 Media and Business Summit last week, Bethesda Softworks said it would be bringing Fallout 3 downloadable content exclusively to Xbox 360 and Windows, leaving buyers of the PS3 version out of luck as far as extra content is concerned.

1.3 - @1.1
You can't get more off-topic than that.

@OP:

Why does everyone assume Sony wins exclusives through "loyalty", and Microsoft wins them through "bribery"? No matter what you want to think, Sony is not the White Knight Hero, and Microsoft is not the Evil Dark Knight Villain. Developers have plenty of reasons to be just as "loyal" to Microsoft as they are to Sony. Why would they not enjoy working on the platform that a majority of developers consider easier and more user friendly?

They are both businesses, and they both do shady things to make a profit. Has Microsoft payed for exclusives and exclusive content? Probably. Does this make them the evil devil Satan of the video game world?

Sorry, that title still belongs to EA.

DLC is ok, a plus for X360 owners but it will NEVER EVER be of the same quality than the one featured in the game nor will add some tweaks to the story...just side quests...the game, main story and what has been polished during years is exactly the same content being released on both PS3 and X360

...DLC is not even for free, people and MSFT make it sound as it is free to download...I played Oblivion on the X360 and got the 1000 achievement points...I never had time for the DLC, I prefered to play new games instead.

Who is really looking forward to play more GTAIV this fall instead of Fallout 3, Gears2, Fable2 or any of the other great games being released this fall on the X360?

XB2? Do you mean the XBox 36---OOOH WAIT, I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE. Very clever, sir. Well played.

Well, the DLC hasn't come out ye---OOOH WAIT, I GET IT. You were being *sarcastic*. Hilarious, I say. Truly a bright shining wit here on N4G.

The day is yours.

Am I going to care about DLC after spending 100+ hours or so playing Fallout 3? Probably not.

They could fit this "DLC" on the blueray disk if they wanted to. It would be extremly nice and awkward for microsoft if they did.

But then it wouldn't be DLC would it? If Microsoft wants to keep throwing money at "exclusive DLC" so they can have another bullet point that's their business, but it's just not going to make me buy a game for the 360 over the PS3 - if I didn't think the game was going to be adequately entertaining without additional content I wouldn't buy it in the first place. And if I have to choose which console I'm going to get a multi-plat on, assuming it's not a crappy port, if I'm honest I'm most likely going to get it for the PS3 - I like the controller and the PS3 doesn't sound like a jet taxiing through my living room - which I like.

Don't speak again or I might hate you to death.

But seriously. What made Fallout cool was the highly detailed gameplay mechanics and extensive story(That was more the case for fallout 2). However given the FPSish perspective change the old gameplay is mostly gone, so we will see.

P.S. I rank fallout 2 amongst the top 3 games ever made.

It's obvious that Microsoft paid for the DLC.

Fallout 3 was a part of Microsoft's Conference at E3 and they made the announcement of the Fallout 3 DLC for the 360 at E3 during Microsoft's conference, so it's obvious Microsoft just dished out money for it.

What is the point of Microsoft buying exclusive DLC for 3rd party games anyways? I mean, Microsoft didn't sell more 360 hardware just because of the GTA4 DLC and they wont sell anymore 360 hardware with Fallout 3 DLC, the only thing Microsoft is doing is pleasing it's own customers with DLC.

Well, I guess Microsoft has hardly any first party studios to spend money on, so they can go wasting it away on 3rd party. I'm glad Sony is using their money the right way and is putting their money towards the numerous Exclusive PS3 projects that wont appear on the Xbox 360 or PC.

Exclusive DLC is great, but it doesn't sell more hardware and I think that Sony figured that out after Microsoft's bid for GTA4 DLC failed to sell a substantial amount 360 consoles.

8.1 - if you say so
Just because they loaned money to rockstar, key word loaned for dlc doesn't mean they paid everyone off. Third party devs are making a killing off dlc on xbox live, but that couldnt possibly have anything to do with it (sarcasm). I think the big problem with dlc on the ps3 is that you have to use a credit card, alot of people aren't able or comfortable doing so. Especially when you call sony support and they have a spiel about psn being compromised.

9 - Why dont MS do something bigger with their money?
Seriously, they could buy a studio for all the money they are spending on exclusive content and time exclusives. Dont get me wrong it´s a great thing for the 360, but in the long haul it would have been better spent on a studio..

9.1 - I'm gonna do a La Chance and explain...
It's because 3-5 years from now. Microsoft is gonna yield to the console wars and quite the industry all together. Their only iteration that we'll get will undoubtedly be from games like Age of Empires Word War or the likes.

In anycase, blah blah blah... i'll pull more facts out my ass.... blah blah blah... - La Chance

On another note, maybe it's money that's the only reason M$ is actually getting games? Did you ever think of it like that?

9.2 - your making a huge and unjust assumption
think about it, dlc on xbox live makes alot of money, on psn it hasn't yet (probably because they require a credit card).

Not all of Sonys new & upcoming "exclusives" will be big hits & become franchises & become hits with gamers. Quality over Quantity is what Sony seems to be forgetting
Shut this user up Let user speak
ash_divine - 523 days 8 hours ago
10.1 - In the game industry it's the exact opposite, it's quanity over quality
no game will last forever, you have to make sure you have something to play next.

and regardless of whether they are "big hitters" or not, you can't lie and say they don't all look promising.

besides last year all(or most) of Microsoft's games delivered so what's stopping Sony.

10.2 - maybe they won't all be hits but....
i'd rather be playing multiple new franchises like LBP, heavy rain, wardevil, infamous, LA noire....etc.... than playing some dlc for games that i've already played to death.

11 - Why?
Why is it people think every good announcement of MS having something exclusive from a third party gotta lead to MS paying someone off? I know they do pay some of these companies off. But people think they throw money at everything! Keep in mind that games aren't as cheap to make as they used to be, so these companies are looking to make money from every angle they can. So true, MS probably paid this and other companies to put exclusive content on their system! Also, SquareEnix may have looked at the slightly smaller installed base of Ps3 and realized they need to get as much money out of the game as possible!

Why does this bother fanboys so much when something gets announced for 360? Keep in mind that Ps3 owners get something 360 owners can't... User created content(Unreal 3, LBP)! So when they announce something like this... you shouldn't feel threatened, it's just evening things out!

11.1 - Both Sony and MS are paying for third party exclusivity
I just think that MS seems to have been doing it more than Sony this generation. And there´s nothing wrong with that, i just think they could have taken all the money they have spent on that and bought an studio instead.

While this might be good news for PC and 360 gamers, I think it's bad news for consumer all around. DLC is getting out of hand. Weird, but EA and Criterion offered alot of DLC for free for their game Burnout Paradise. What I mean is, if this was universal, they could offer it for a small fee or none @ all, but I'm pretty sure it'll cost more than a l'il bit. I'm sure the same goes for the GTA4 content.

Also, if a game is incomplete before the DLC, then nobody should buy that content (like the weapons EA was holding out for DLC on Battlefield).

Yes I agree. DLC is the sorry excuse for developers to milk more money out of consumers for something that should have been included in the game to begin with.

The only time DLC makes sense is if it's for new multiplayer maps.

But charging DLC for a weapon or clothes is just plain milking it. Those should just be free if they insist on it being downloaded later.

16 - DLC?
Horse Armor. 'Nuff said. Think about it folks; no DLC can be that signifigant to screw with the story too much, or the endings wouldn't make sense. Plus, the DLC for GTA is, at this point, vaporware. If the GTA DLC is pathetic and/or overpriced, then M$ will the laughing stock of the industry.

Yeah Bethesda screwed up big time with their first DLC release. But all their subsequent DLC for Oblivion was brilliant. Mehrunes' Razor, Knights of the Nine, Fighter's Stronghold and the Shivering Isles were all brilliant and well-received additions to Oblivion.

You really need to do your homework before chirping in,

17 - Microsoft will pay for anything
as long as they can say exclusive and Exclusivity.. I think MS is going to end up buying these words.. Every multi plat game, MS has to have exclusive DLC now. And every third party game the ps3 has microsoft has to go after it so they can say its not exclusive to the ps3 anymore..

I dont even think MS or the developlers know what exclusive DLC will be added to the games when they make these deals. MS probably just says here is a check make some exclusive stuff for our game.. Dev's are probably like no, than they look at the check and say nevermind we will think of something... lol.. Than MS says to everyone WE HAVE EXCLUSIVE DLC!!!!

18 - I guess like GTA4 played to 30 percent and got bored,
So why would I buy extra content of the same old crap I have been playing for 100 hours...So do you 360 fans still beleave you got the full GTA4 experiance even though 95 percent of all gamer's never get a 100 percent complete on just the retail package alone...extra content is just a way for M$ to nickel and dime the blind...I guess fallout3 extra content will be release what NOV2010 and be adverstise as the complete package.....I guess it's good for you 360 fans since exclusive content is becoming less and less these days since every 3rd party going multi and only Sony has the big 1st party lineup..Gears3 on PS3, cant' wait

@Maulesnhaummer:

I HAVE gotten the expansions on the PC (two of them, at least), and they weren't all that, and like I said, they added NOTHING to the main story. It's impossible for them to without screwing up the game for those who don't shell out for the DLC.

Hey but don't be ashamed....I know you're part of the M$ defense league, so I know you have your obligations to fill and duties to perform. By the way, aren't your club dues coming up? $50 a year, if I'm not mistaken.
