Spore space phase is 15-20 hours, has one ending

Will Wright's Spore is aiming to set precedents in many ways, and it's also set to break a long-standing Maxis tradition: the game ends. Producer Thomas Vu told us that the space phase of the game is what he considers the RPG phase, with 15 to 20 hours of gameplay and -- prepare to be floored -- one ending. No matter how your species lives its existence, it always ends the same way as you make your way to the center of the universe.

1 - Wow
For a game that is as talked up as it is, why only one ending and only 15-20 hours of gameplay?

I think people assumed this would be an infinite running game.

Wright may have shot himself in the foot a little here.

The last 1/5 of the game is 15-20 hours. You still have 3 or 4 other phases to play through before you get to the space phase. But I agree, the one ending is kind of lame, although I guess I actually need to see it first.

One ending is good.

I'd rather have one good, satisfying ending than two or more terrible endings. *cough*BioShock*cough*

1.4 - The logic behind one ending...
I guess the logic in one climatic ending lies in what scientists call "the Kardashev scale", a method of classifying how technologically advanced a civilization is. The ultimate phase in the Kardashev scale is Type III civilization. Here's the description of it from Wikipedia:

"Type III — a civilization that is able to harness all of the power available from a single galaxy, approximately 4×10^37 W."

My guess is that the game ends when the player has harnessed the energy available from the whole galaxy and thus reached the level III in civilization evolution.

Here's the entry of Kardashev scale in Wikipedia:

I doubt the ending has anything to do with the Kardashev scale or anything like that. Everything that has a beginning has an end. Planets come and go as well as all living things. So I'm sure that your species somehow hits the end of the road.

If it's an end like in Super Mario Galaxy, they can keep it.

Wait, think about this for a minute.

Anyone know the full game time? Well i'd suggest it would be about 40-50 hours total. Also, the replay possiblilty is endless, with customizations ect, i think this is a way to improve reply even more, sure you could start, play to space age, then make another creature, and do the same, but with an actual ending the player, us, will be rewarded for all our efforts, with an end game.

I dont think this is a bad idea, and yes i know, its a new thing for Maxis to do, however, i do not think that after the you finish the game for the first time, you'll be done with it, as i for one am a huge fan of (most) Maxis games, however, i would like to see my species working towards a final goal; whatever it may be.

Also, everything i hear about this game makes me love it even more; cept the security software (are they still using it btw?) and i cannot wait to evolve my species through the ages :)

4 - Gee let me think...
We'll destroy and eradicate all other species that don't conform to our rules and become the dominant supreme ruler of a dying, wasteland universe. Oh wait, isn't that Bush and Cheney's plan? My bad, sorry.

Althought amusing, you are not 100% correct, as you will be able to evolve and solve problems without eridicating the emeny, there can be a peaceful Universe you know.

maybe the end of the game is the end of the universe. That way no matter what you do it ends the same way.
