Flagship Studios: We're Not Dead! We Just Fired Everyone!

The past several days have been filled with speculation that 'Hellgate: London' developer Flagship Studios has closed its doors and that Flagship's parent company has taken over the rights of Hellgate: London. However, in a statement released by Flagship Studios, CEO Bill Roper explains that the development house founded by former Diablo II members has not shut down, but has laid off most of its workforce.

Roper also went on to explain that because of the troubled times at Flagship Studios, they will no longer be accepting new subscribers to 'Hellgate: London', but those who are already playing the game will now be playing for free.

7 - Interesting...
They have money problems, but they are accepting no more subscribers and those that are already playing get to play for free? I'm no businessman, but few customers and no money doesn't tend to work well in getting you out of the hole. I'm sure they know what they're doing...they do, don't they?

Shame. With another 12 months of development time and a bit more hype Hellgate might have been a really good game. Just another case of a developer with ambition far outstripping it's capabilities, and launching too soon.

Their business model always seemed doomed to failure regarding subscribers. I bought the game, but had no reason to pay for a sub. The extra features compared to the non-sub version were minimal and I didn't need them. I think they would have had more luck positioning the game with a similar business model to Guild Wars.

I enjoyed it for a while, but it was a little too buggy at times, and as I said, just needed more time in the development oven.

I hope those people who got laid off find work quickly. :(
