Diablo III Thoughts From Ex-Blizzard Employee

Ex-Blizzard employee Mike Huang shared his thoughts at his personal blog after the announcement of Diablo III -- which took place at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitationals on June 27th. He slips some details of the early concept work done by Blizzard North prior to their departure on 2003.

The Barbarian class was not planned at that point because it was considered a broken class. All classes in Diablo III were originally planned to be different from the roster in Diablo II to create new skills/talent trees from scratch rather than redo the old classes in 3D.

"One of the reasons why the Barbarian return shocks me so much is that I always felt that the Barbarian character class was the most broken of the classes in Diablo II. The Barbarian's ability to Leap, for instance gave him advantage over other classes which had to walk around the barrier -- it is the showcasing of this skill in the video (during which a bridge crumbles away, leaving no way to cross the gap) which makes me wonder if they have an alternate way for other characters to cross the gap or if all the characters have Leap now."

I wondered this as well when I watched that gameplay video. Are there going to be multiple paths for the other characters to traverse, or is Blizzard going to sully the unique character development by giving other characters the same skills?

Why should the Barbarian be "broken" because of his leap ability? It's certainly an advantage, but what about the Sorceress' teleport? Or the Necromancer's bone wall? These are both abilities that provide an essential gameplay advantage, and they are class-exclusive. But they certainly don't "break" the respective classes.

Leap doesn't even give you an advantage in PVP, so I really can't follow you here...

actually if i remember correctly leap prevents you from taking damage while in air, but either way i agree with the fact that skills should enhance class specific gameplay

each character may have a certain skill that is related to the barbarians leap... for example, the Assaisan may have the teleport skill thingy called Glimpse? or along those lines like in the Warcraft III game (one of the heros have it) if you played the game you know what im talking about... and the Amazon may do frontflips and the paladin may sprout wings and soar over and sorce of course teleport and the druid maybe able to turn into a bird and the necro maybe able turn into a ghost who knows lol possibilties are endless

i just wish they have more secret cow levels!! they were awesome!!
