Diablo III Producer - "Color Is Your Friend"

Kotaku Writes:

Yes, Diablo III is going to be much more vivid and vibrant than its predecessors, a fact that has some fans signing a petition against the shinier, happier art direction - now with over fifteen thousand signatures. Tracey John over at MTV Multiplayer spoke with Diablo III lead producer Keith Lee about the during the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in Paris this past weekend, who defended the move towards a brighter, more colorful Diablo.

I was kind of skeptical about people complaining about the new super bright colors (maybe cuz I played TQ last?) but after seeing some of the photoshopped screenshots vs the original screenshots I would have to agree the "darker" look many fans are asking for looks a BILLION times better than the actual one used by Blizzard that again thanks to other screenshots D3 DOES have the same pallet and lightning as WOW and WC3 -_-

I am gonna look for those screenshots on the GS forums right now to give the example (hopefully I will find them :S)

also the petition to change the colors is surprisingly going VERY strong O.o

It may look good in a screenshot, but it'll be horrible in motion.

I've played Crysis with the ultra-high contrast that you always see in those amazing looking screenshots, and in motion it's annoying and looks terrible.

There's no doubt in my mind that Diablo 3 will be fun and give us many many hours of addicting game play. However, I don't like the new artistic direction either. I miss the dark, Gothic, gritty look. The previous Diablos has a more desperate, survivor-horror, everything has gone to hell atmosphere.

For the same reasons, I don't really like StarCraft 2's graphics either. It looks too campy.

Maybe Blizzard can just use a color filter similar to early builds of Metal Gear Solid 4 where things were yellow. If not, I know some video card drivers have filters where you can make everything black and white, matrix green, or other things like that.

Check out the comparison image I threw together.

I tried turning down the saturation in the screen shots. Still looks campy, but irregardless. If Blizzard doesn't change the design, I'm sure everyone will adjust. If they don't want to play D3 just because they don't like the artistic design, then they'll probably be missing out. The game play will be great either way.

couldn't find them (still looking) but I found a nice article that features a smaller size of them plus how surprisingly the petition is going strong (almost 20.000 signatures)

from the sample shots as you can see the first (original) has that WOW/WC3 kind of feel BUT if you look at the modified one now THAT is Diablo like, the second image is not that great of an example due to the size it looks well just dark -_-

I would like to know if Blizzard has seen this images so they would know its not "redo the entire game" like some counter fans and Blizzard have suggested cuz if they aren't gonna change the cartoony kind of characters at least do something about the color pallet or have an optional color filter...something! :)

it makes sense what he says: how can we appreciate the dark scary dungeons if the jungles, lakes, mountains, etc. are all just as dark?

5 - I'd like to see people stop complaining...
It's too colorful? Are you kidding me? Time has told us that Blizzard knows what they're doing. Stop fearing change and accept that these people want the series to evolve. They don't seem to want to make daiblo 2 with better graphics. They want to make diablo 3, a new game in a remarkably groundbreaking series. Stop and think about it for a second, do you really want to same exact feel of the original games or do you want a similar feel that is pushed into new territories.

It's funny that around the same time that people are getting on Blizzards ass about the art direction, Fallout 3 producer Ashley Cheng, says that hes disappointed that, "Blizzard has stayed on the conservative side in terms of design with their updates to Diablo and Starcraft."

6 - True
All of the Diablos were great, but visually a bit drab in many respects for my liking. Yet all the titles had their own ambiance because of the art direction. What I think has happened with Blizzard, as a result of the success of WOW. They are keeping things a bit uniform. So that people picking up Diablo 3 will see something familar, yet different from their WOW expeirence. I would assume this for players who have never touched a Diablo title. Which if you take a look at WOW players, could be a massive amount. Yet I'm all for Blizzard doing whatever they want till they fucc up. They've been getting it right for far too long not to get it right.

Killzone no colors
gears to grey
crysis to bright
diablo3 to much color

ffs stop whining and start altering your color settings on your monitor if your so damn allergic to either of those "problems".

btw the first diablo3 images especially the gameplay blew me away it looks dead gorgeous the effects the colors the style is perfect. my 2 cents

To me it's not just about colour, it's the overall design, right now it looks quite frankly like high poly WoW-models.

There's no doubt this game will be awesome, in its own way, but the design style doesn't hit the mark.

I'll buy this game no matter what, though.

how people hate the new art style that looks 10 xs better than the last two. Now I played and loved both diablo 1 and 2 the days they were released(that sounds illegal in 32 states). They looked amazing( back then). But a lot of that dark(and somewhat bland) color pallet was due to constraints on graphics in those days. enjoy the fact that the game has moved on ,a little bit mind you(could have been a 1st person view after all)and revel in the fact that it will play exactly like it did when it was first released only better!!!! P.S. if you don't like it don't play it and go make your own damn game that I will most likely play and love whichever art style you choose.

Relax people and try to read:

"not everything is dark. It allows you to see what a creepy dungeon can be like but if everything is dark it doesn’t allow you to have a lot of contrast"

I think it's not that whole D3 will be like Care Bears. There will be places during sunny day, most probably also during night, and gothic and dark dungeons as previously. I think they're just adding a little more potential "environments".

12 - I think everyone is missing the point.
I don't think the fans are really complaining about 'colors', but rather the tone of the visuals. The fans what a more 'evil' looking game, hense the games name, DIABLO 3. I think the art director is not connecting the dark story with the visual atmosphere. I didn't care for the Warcraft 3's art direction either, but on Diablo 3 it looks even worse. In fact, the look is not horrible, but I think with the tech that is available Blizzard should realize a more 'dark' or 'satanic' look and atomosphere, because that is what the fans are after. A true 'mature' realization of Diablo 3.

As good as the Diablo 2's story was, the art and charactor design was cheesey and uninspired at times. For instance, the barbarian looks too cartoonish, merely a weight lifter who got some ink on his face. Blizzard has the money to hire artist's who speciallize in 'dark' fantasy art, not some comic book pop art college rejects.

13 - Art Direction goes a long way.
Yes I know graphics aren't everything, but the look of a game helps to influence the feel and experience of the game as well. If it was done right Diablo III could use a bunch of 2D sprites and still be an epic game. The current art Direction seems to betray what Diablo Fans loved, trudging through helltorn dungeons as a lone warrior or group of warriors standing up against overwhelming armies of horrific demons. The game left you feeling hopeless, claustrophobic and even paranoid at times yet it was all what made the experience enjoyable. The towns in the beginning of the stages were like beautiful safe havens, places you actually hung out in and relaxed with your friends to take a break from the hostile wilderness.

I am not saying they are bad games, but I was not able to play Wind waker and I probably won't be playing SF4 simply because the art direction strayed to far from what I enjoyed.
