IGN: Alone in the Dark Review & Video Review

Alone in the Dark has some good ideas, but it fails at most because it tries them all. Nice visuals, great fire effects and valiant efforts at innovation don't make up for boring combat, frustrating controls, poorly designed levels and a hackneyed story. There's a certain amount of old-school adventure charm in Alone in the Dark, but it shines only as the dimmest of lights, hemmed in by the darkness of its many failures.

4.1 - Haze isn't the worst game out there

In my honest opinion;Haze is a 6.5,nothing more,nothing less.

A 6.5 in my book,is a game that is alright,but ultimately fails in delivering a great experience.I should also mention that after playing NG 2 I awarded it the same score.

On topic;Yowza,I didn't expect IGN to give this game a 3.5

You have an Xbox 360 to play Ninja Gaiden 2? Did you borrow one and play the game all the way through? Someone brings up Haze and YOU promptly dish out some Xbox hate...sounds odd. Good grief, I can't take anything you say seriously, except your lies.

On topic: 3.5 is a little harsh but is only one review. A single review shouldn't change your opinion of any game. If you don't believe the review, rent the game first before you decide to buy.

What has that got to do with Alone in the Dark? I understand the Haze reference because SUPER already raised it as did others and it's got a similar Metacritic. But NG2 has nothing to do with it other than making your motives completely transparent! lol

I'm with you Bloodmask but Atari's TimeShift wasn't too bad IMO. I kinda liked it and it got decent scores.

Still, after reading the review I got a feeling that reviewer didn't fully understand the game. It won't be the 8 we were expecting but also, not a 3.5.
Atari is going downhill and with the decision to stop making singleplayer games... lol. Goodbye Atari :)

Yeah Atari makes a good game occasionally. When the planets align, a polar bear visits you in your dreams, and you find a penny on the streets and that is exactly what happened right before they released Neverwinter Nights 2.

Holy ****!?! There is no way this game could deserve such a low score. WTF was IGN playing? To me the game always looked great but even from a not so positive stand point, the many innovative ides and unique gameplay parts alone deserve a much better score IMO. Totally unfair. Sure, it may not be the 8/10 or something but 3!? Even the uber harsh EuroGamer gave it a 7/10.
I'm still getting it to make up my own mind about it.

Glad to hear. Definitly a rental at the very least though since even this reviewer thinks it has unique ideas, good fire gameplay and catchy soundtrack, I know I'll be buying it. Plus, it's a M rated game which I kinda tend to collect as much as I can.

7.6 is real awesome from a predominately one sided site, and one was prolly you giving it a ridiculous score like a 10 or a 9. I really trust that score!

I played the game, and it was ugly, dim witted, and bug infested. I'd much rather take my chances with this game.

Damn, what a shame. The whole concept of Alone in the Dark sounded pretty cool to me and I was hoping that this game would be a solid 8.0/10 game across the board.

I guess we'll just have to wait for Silent Hill Homecoming, Resident Evil 5, and/or Dead Space to get our real daily dose of Survival Horror.

.... And IGN sure isn't afraid to give out low scores these days. They totally destroyed HAZE with a 4.5, then it was Operation Darkness with a 2.5, and now Alone in the Dark.

But when it comes to graphics, I think that a lot of reviewers are using games like Uncharted, COD4, GT5 Prologue, and MGS4 to compare other games to while reviewing them, and if those games they are reviewing can't compare to the games I listed above graphically, they'll probably just get low scores for graphics and it's as simple as that.

This is why I can't stand gaming sites sometimes. When they preview a game, they never say anything bad about it, even if it is going to be horrible, just so they don't get the devs mad. So they get you hyped up for a game, then they give it a score like this.

I can understand low scores for gameplay, but visuals...come on they are pretty neat, slightly better than GTA-IV for crying out loud, why the hell they had to give such a lousy score. Its at least a 6-7. I hope it doesn't stops Atari from discontinuing with the plans for a sequel, but rather learn where they went wrong and make up for it. Also, improve the PS3 version which has a chance of still making the cut.
