Crysis with ultra-realistic forests

A new texture mod is in the works on the Crymod forums. The texture quality is really amazing although the images look a bit over-saturated. Nevertheless a fine work.

With the amount of jaggies in these shots, I can fully believe it is in-game.

But still, that last shot is incredible if truly in-game.

2.1 - just google "forest"
and you'll find that picture. but the caption on the site asks if u can spot the difference between CG and real-life pics so im guessing thats the only real picture there

jaggies still happen with digital pictures when they are enlarged too much.

Those pictures look way too real, I call faker than fake.

These are definitely not fake and are rendered in CryENGINE 2. If they're not, then they're very convincing.

I recognize the Crysis textures, props, and brushes. Also, you can see some texture warping on the trees.

The first five are in-engine. The last is not as the description under the image says, "Real-life pic of trees as a comparison (source: Wikipedia)."

it should be illegal to make stuff look this real, lest someone tries to jump into the screen and hit their head

Don't you even kid with this... For sure, sometime will come someone and say they can't publish those games because it's "too real", and ESRB would just put it under AO.

4 - sorry in advance for the Who reference...
Yeah, but how's it move? All the looks in the world amount to nothing if it doesn't have believable movement. That's one of the main things that bother me about the graphical quality increasing so rapidly in the last several years. Animation has almost completely taken a back seat to textures and polygons. When you can make a screenshot look like those its easy to get people pumped and ignore that your models move with all the lifelike motion of a Dalek.
Its true though that animation has made leaps and bounds this year. Even with Natural Motion's proprietary software being used in AAA games like GTA4, the advanced motion capturing technology used in Heavenly Sword (and what little we've seen of Heavy Rain), and Naughty Dog's home grown procedural animation system they developed for Uncharted, motion is still largely ignored.

4.1 - since when did animation take a back seat?
you yourself listed a bunch of new improvments in animation.

But you also forgot about our physics and how those create more real, and life-like animations. And the engies for physics is always increasing.

4.2 - I agree, but....
You're absolutely right, but in Crysis I find at least the environment and physics to bee truly next gen. The movement of the enemies is good as well, but not THAT great as the environment. There is a large number of "Crysis sandbox physics movies" that show of the games capabilities.

But the most stunning thing with Crysis is that no other game is so "alive", the bushes, the grass and every leaf and branch on the trees sway in the wind and reacts to bullets and explotions. The sun rays that fall down through the treetops, it's all amazing to watch. So Crysis isn't just pretty pictures, it has to be seen in motion.

Sure, I named a few positives, but for every one of them I could name 5 games that have weighed heavily on graphics, and glanced over the overall animation quality. I'm not saying its all bad, just that it's something that has grown at a different pace from graphics. Wouldn't you say that its easier to immerse yourself in a game that has fluid animation/not so great graphics than a game with choppy animation/gorgeous graphics? I'd personally rather look at a believable moving robot than a believable looking robot, but a fine balance between the two would be best.

Wow that's crazy! Why the hell won't game studios hire these people when they have such a talent.

These people take existing resources and improve on them. I'm sure if the developers went back and critiqued their own work they could make some improvements themselves. Not such a bad idea, actually.

Is their random ppl making crysis look better through mods? or are they doing updates making it look better?

Also I cant even believe something can look like that and be playable. Id like to see that moving if not I call blasphemy. I think there is a reason they didnt show a character model in any of those pics.

Man that takes for ever to bake. I think I'm going to look into these guys. No wonder this game is so hard on GPUs. These scenes would take for every to render.

to answer some of your questions , i work alone on this project , this is not a retexture project , it will be a complete mod using my own models/textures , these screens were taken about the next day i started the project so , very early in production , and i used alot of crysis's models just to give me an idea. there is no photoshopping , this is all in-game , running at a very smooth fps , if you would like to stay up to date peep this thread out , http://www.crymod.com/threa...

peace
