Fallout 3: "Are Bethesda biting off more than they can chew?" - CVG Preview

CVG writes:

Sadly, there is some wavering in my worship at the Fallout 3 shrine. These are more a few moments of disquiet rather than an outraged notice nailed to Bethesda's oaken doors, but a worry nonetheless.

Bedecked in Power Armour (robbing you of perception and agility, but maxing out your bullet-soaking abilities) you'll fight your way through the area, but it did get me worrying how Fallout 3 will work as a shooter.

All the time-halting VATS stuff still looks great, but what of the non-tactical shooting - will it feel as weighty as it should? Are Bethesda biting off more than they can chew when they enter the realm of the FPS?

Time will tell, but the (admittedly max-ammo and max-stimpack) jaunt through the DC trenches didn't allay any fears.

Yeah I agree. My view is that Bethesda as a developer should either go full blown FPS or stick to turn based... as a Fallout fan it's different! lol

This whole idea indeed sucks.

We should look at F3 as a spin-off made by Beth. That way it may be fun. Plus, F3 is really a FPS by Bethesda and not a real sequel to legendary Fallout 2 so we can have fun with Bullet time in Bethesda's FPS.

My main concern is the dialogue quality and veriety.

@2.3 another way to look at it is that it is a new Oblivion game but using the Fallout setting. I heard from some people invited in Beta testing and they concurred that it was a good comparison.

I think we'll have to play the the game to know for sure. Saying that is just "Oblivion with guns" at this stage is nothing but especulation. Lets just wait and see. I'm liking what I read and I did play the original ones. What i can say is that I certainly don't want another isometric game, I think FP or TP is more imersive and imersion is the name of the game for me. As long as the rest, like dialogues, etc, are at the same level of the first ones I'm happy. I coudn't care less for turn based combat.

But thats just me.

The turn based did add a tactical element that seems missing from a TP or FP game. One of the reasons it was selected in the first place. It removes the value of many of the coolest perks as well if you leave strategic turn based gameplay.

Xcom did turn based as well - give a muc more strategic gameplay rather then twitch gameplay. (and when xcom left it - the franchise died)

otoh with only one other in your group rather than a whole team like the older fall outs you no longer stress as much about accidently frying your entire team with a plasma gun blast (especially if you have bad luck and bloody mess on)because of crossing fields of fire.

I will attempt to view this not as a sequel but as a new game in the Fallout Universe. Seems the best option for us Fallout vets. Maybe one day we will get the sequel we desire.

Having real time combat with the ability to pause has worked extremely well for BioWare's rpgs. Unless the implementation is screwed up it should work quite well.

It's the implementation that I'm worried about.

If they can do a more polished version of Bioware's Mass Effect combat that would be promising.

I agree. Just having a feature in a game doesn't guarantee it will be properly implemented.

Bethesda tried to bite a whole lot more than they can chew when they decided to make Fallout 3 in the beginning.

3.1 - MK, there will never be Fallout 3 news without you will there?
I'm looking forward to this game to, I also can't wait for Dues Ex 3, Too Human, The Precursors, Prototype, RE5, NG2, Project Origin and (crosses fingers) Thief 4.

I am Fallout! j/k
Yeah, I'm looking forward to those games but Thief 4... The original 2 ROCKED beyond any other stealth game and even 3rd one was great. As for Deus Ex 3 I feat it may end up like Fallout 3. An FPS made for general FPS gamers and not the core RPG fans of classics.

3.3 - Bloody hell Jason way to get me excited!
Thief 4 would be fantastic, and along with Deus Ex 3 and Prototype, that might make me a very happy gamer come 2009!

And nice to see another believer in Too Human. There's a reason that Microsoft signed off on a trilogy a month back and I'm sure we'll all get that soon enough. :)

"An FPS made for general FPS gamers and not the core RPG fans of classics."

What are you expecting? 50 million dollars for ptoduction costs to sell just 250.000 copyies to the orginal fans? Ain't gonna happen to any future game. The only reason why those games were so good is because they were low-budget to begin with and the fear of not selling enough to cover costs was low. Heck, the publishers of the original Fallout didn't even care what the hell the dev team was doing back then (as stated i a na interview with the lead developer). Thats why it was so good.

I'm beginning to view this game not as a sequel but as one set in the Fallout universe, similar to Tactics, which I liked. From what I've seen I think I'll enjoy the game, as long as I'm not comparing it to the first 2...those are big shoes to fill.

4.1 - I'm taking your mantra and running with it!
I suspect both Fallout 3 and Banjo Kazooie 3 will be far more enjoyable if viewed as their own entities rather than parts of much loved but old-school franchises.

Same here, it is indeed more like spin-off taking place in the Fallout universe. I likeD Tactics as well :)

As for BK3, at least that has the same developement team.

Fallout 2 is certainly a hard act to follow, but Bethesda know their s**t and I dont think they would be creating a new Fallout unless they thought they could do it right.

I have high hopes for this, it would certainly be a shame to see it not live up to them but as of now, I'm still confident this is going to be one killer title.

This will hopefully be a killer game but not a follow up to Fallout 2. Fallout 2 is an act that it's impossible to follow.

We should all indeed look at it as some kind of spin-off.
