Gates: Every surface to be a computer

It's one step removed from the Midas approach, but Bill Gates wants to turn nearly everything we touch into a computer.

Speaking to a crowd of CEOs gathered in Redmond, Wash., Gates showed off prototype technology he said will allow home and office walls to become computers.

1.1 - Just wait
Apple will release a Mac Tablet before the year's end, according to many circulating rumors and patents.

The Mac Tablet rumor is older than the MacBook. If you really follow Apple you would know that it's not happening anytime soon if ever - Apple isn't interested in such a tiny, niché market - the way that tablet PCs are today. They certainly are taking multi-touch technology seriously, but given how recently they launched a brand-new, infant product (iPhone) I, among many others, think the likelihood of the rumored Mac Tablet is not at all likely to materialize this year.

I wonder if there is really a market for this. As cool as the interface and interaction sounds and looks, it would be very tiring to stand in front of your wall waving your arms around. Most people can't even be bothered to get of their couch to get the TV remote, never mind standing in front of a screen for hours.

I would think that gesture/voice recognition would be a better approach. It allows you to control the surface from anywhere and any position. The software and hardware for it is also much closer and cheaper, since you only need a current TV and camera/microphone.

This could work, but on smaller screens that you can put on your lap. But wait, doesn't that already exist?

I think these big touch screens would be really cool, but ultimately useless in a consumer environment. Apart from certain applications like presentations...

Restaurant tables, maps at mall/other locations, museum exhibits. Few examples.

Yes, there the surfaces would work, but then the cost would have to come down significantly.

It takes time for things like this like this to work. Assuming you are 18 years old, we might see this stuff by the time we are old. Here's hoping immortality is a possibility in the near future.

that said 360 is better than PS3? Or that Windows is better than OS X? Or that Zune is better than iPod? Or that Windows Live Search will overtake Google?

Very very few places would benefit from having a computer on every surface.

I agree with you on those things but if you know anything about Bill Gates is that he already donates a huge amount of money to charity. Every quarter he sells 20 million shares of microsoft stock and everything goes to charity. He has given away more than $40 billion making him one of the biggest philantrapist. He already has everything set up for when he dies that about 90% of his money will go to charity.

9 - I seriously hope...
That it won't freeze up like a lot of computers do, won't have to be manually upgraded like normal computers, and the benefit will outweigh the cost at least by 2 to 1. =] Especially if the benefits outweight the cost, I'd help fund it.

Going to be a lot of smudge marks on these touch screens...

The Microsoft Surface does indeed look cool, wish I had the money to buy one of these things. MS said that the Surface would cost from $5,000 - $10,000 dollars and it will take a few years to come down to a reasonable cost to the consumer.

Do we really need to have more stuff running around us. A laptop lets you be on a computer anywhere and thats all you need.
