Save yourself the money and just build your own rig, that's what I'm going to do

Mm, can't do that with laptops, sadly. =(

...

Not cost-efficiently at least.

I've been building PCs for over a decade, for fun (friends and fam). but on the low end, dells cannot be beat. Get a complete system with monitor etc. for basic computing needs. Of course I ask if they're going to game at all.

But the XPS models (desktop) can easily be beat if planned correctly.

As a fan of Mac's... this is the only series of PC laptops I respect. Say what you want against Dell and the rest of their junk, but their XPS notebooks (emphasis on NOTEBOOKS, can't testify for their desktop PC's) were amazing, reliable, had a great build quality, looked beautiful... and could actually run Vista without any issues! *GASP!* I'm dismayed to see them go.

But then again, they've got Alienware under their wing, so I'm sure whatever they plan to do with the Alienware laptops will be pure gold.

And of course there's Gateway's new FX line, which is actually not all that bad. Yeah. Gateway. I know you did a double-take on that.

2.1 - Well for desktops
XPS 420 owner here, and I haven't had a single hitch so far since Early November, runs things great. I'm using IE8Beta which is the only problem sometimes but it runs like a dream :)

Agreement seconded! I built mine myself and got a much better deal running an SLI setup than buying an expensive XPS system.

To respond quickly, the "fun" is in the eye of the beholder of course. I personally, love tinkering around in my PC and tweaking it. As for other people, not so much. As for pricing, depending on what you put into it, building your own PC can be substantially cheaper than buying a pre-assembled package from a company like Dell or Hewlett-Packard (HP). You can often save hundreds of dollars and still buy better equipment in your own box, than what a company would sell you a pre-made for the same price. I looked at XPS systems a year or so ago and they were commonly charging well over 2000 dollars for a gaming level PC. I built my own PC recently with a 3.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo overclocked to 3.5, 4GB of 800MHz RAM overclocked to 933, a SoundBlaster X-Fi Platinum soundcard and 2 nVIDIA 7950GT KO Superclocked videocards for running in SLI (which they do extremely well). I built my entire system with a 22" Samsung 226cw monitor for about 1750 dollars. On top of not having payed over 2000 dollars, I have complete control over what goes into my PC. Just one more advantage that you have building your own versus buying pre-assembled boxes.

Dell is great, I have a Dimension 5000 series and its awesome.
I upgraded it and now can run crysis all high with 3k ram and 9600gt.

But next time Im gonna build my own rig, its just I had very little knowledge how to do it before and thanks to dell I got great deal and no rip off. bought it almost 3 years ago. got free 512 to 1024mb ram upgrade, free delivery, free printer and free 17" to 19" monitor.

I wish Dell all the luck but from here on I dont need their product anymore :)

The manual that comes with the motherboard tells you pretty much step-by-step how to assemble a computer.

If you need additional help, just ask around on the Internet. HardForum.com is a great forum to ask for help. The PC & Hardware forum on GameSpot.com is actually a good place, as well.

Yeah building a PC really isn't that difficult. As long as the motherboard manufacturer supplies you with a good and comprehensive manual, it's as The IneffableBob said. Basically follow it step by step and you can get it running. It can be a bit more technical than that. You need to make sure the motherboard you get supports the processor you buy, and you need to make sure that the RAM is compatible. Most things like this can be simply figured out with some basic common sense. Look around, see what you think you'd need, and go from there. And as he said above, there are lots of resources and forums around the net that could help you should you be interested.

7 - I would imagine that this will also affect their XPS laptop range ..
.. I was thinking of getting one of their XPS M1730 laptops as compared to the Alienware equivalent is considerably cheaper and everyone who owns a high performance Dell laptop only has great things to say about it. I guess you pay a little premium to have the Alienware branding on there.

I currently have a Rock lappy, but unfortunately they've gone into administration, a real shame as its a stunning piece of kit and very reliable.

i get awesome xps comps at ultra low cost through Heinz Canada. I'm glad i picked up a m1730 at Christmas but next year. hopefully they let us start picking from the Alienware catalog. its great they front them with no interest at a discounted price.

I used to always build my own PC's. The combination of knowing exactly the quality of components, and the fun of putting it together were unmatched. Then there was the tweaking...

But in the end I got bored of this. It was just too much hassle. And while I have every respect to people who build their rigs, I just can't be bothered these days!! I guess as I get older I just like the hassle free nature of a good warranty and next day service if anything goes wrong!!

As such I'm sad to see the XPS line go. They were pretty good quality, and fairly good value for money. Alienware on the other hand has always been overpriced and recent models have been criticised for build quality. I dislike paying a premium for stuff like a Recovery DVD, or acoustic dampening.

I really hope Dell keep the XPS laptop range going. I own an M1330 and it's fantastic.
