Pachter: PS3 Beat 360 in April, Software Boomed

EDGE writes:

"Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter believes that the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 in the US during April, while monthly software sales hit $830 million, up 113 percent on last April's total.

Ahead of the NPD Group's April videogame sales data release, expected this Thursday after market close, Pachter forecast that Nintendo once again came out on top in terms of hardware sales, shifting 600,000 Wii consoles and 550,000 DS systems. He cited greater Wii and DS availability in his investor note as contributing factors to the systems' sales success. He also said he expects the PS3 to have outsold the Xbox 360 by 290,000 units to 275,000..."

No. All that has happened is that website misquoted him. Go to their main page as I said and the article actually quotes his estimates with the PS3 on top. Then they asked him. How did they ask him? Did they really speak to him? Is it a misquote? What we do know is he released figures and an official statement so that is obviously what he meant.

Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter has released a research note saying that he expects PS3 to have outsold Xbox 360 in the US in April.

Here are his estimates, according to Next-Gen (simExchange predictions):

Wii: 600,000 (734,000)
PS3: 290,000 (363,000)
Xbox 360: 275,000 (381,000)
PS2: 160,000 (n/a)
DS: 550,000 (609,000)
PSP: 235,000 (282,000)

How often do I use it? Plenty.

I bought it as a fun group device, admittidly, if I'm alone I spend more time on the PS or xbox. But when I have friends over, we come home from the pub, whatever, it's the WII that gets played. Everyone can take part or laugh at those making a fool out of themselves jumping around waving a wii-mote. It much more fun than 9 people sat around watching me play GTA.

I'm a hardcore gamer at heart but I wont allow that from stopping me enjoying games that might not be as visually attractive but in the right situation offer much more fun than most of the "next-gen" games.

I just play computer games, simple as that, don't care what format, what publisher, what developer. If its fun, I'll play it, and regardless what some claim, the Wii can offer up as much fun as anyother system out there.

The release of the awesome "Boom Blox" only serves to make your "idiots" comment even stupider than it would usually be.

Yeah, the presentation is kiddy, but the idea and implementation of the physics-based puzzles are awesome.

Not sure what the fascination with Wii is, but to each their own I guess. And on the Boom Blox comment, everyone is so impressed with the game because it has physics... Is the Wii so underpowered that a good physics engine is the only thing that gets you guys excited?

I own a Wii, a 360, and a nice gaming PC, so I'm not suddenly enthralled just because a game has physics.

I think you really have to play it to understand the appeal. This game really couldn't be done nearly as well on any platform besides the Wii (except MAYBE the PC), which is why it's a big deal to me.

It's one of the few Wii games I've played that really shows me the potential of the system. More developers need to take note of it.

Bladestar, if US was the entire world then the PS3 would be in trouble. But the numbers the PS3 is putting out over 360 worldwide is quite impressive!

And secondly, KID... I bet I am older then you and I know what NPD is, but NPD is not the world. Worldwide numbers is the only thing that matters homie... PS3 US sales will catch up soon enough, MS can only keep the kids brainwashed for so long until they realize Quality.

to drop the price of the 360 just before Sony drops the price of the PS3. The PS3 has such a great appeal as a blu ray player alone, that a price drop of even $50 would give the PS3 a great advantage. People are naive when they just discount the fact that Sony will be dropping the price of the PS3 and making a smaller one as well. I also don't see where Sony failed in predicting that people would move from their PS2 to a PS3 for GTAIV. Unless you have seen the NPD numbers, you have actually no idea what happened as far as hardware sales are concerned. If you are not talking about the US, then I feel even worse, because it is widely known that outside of NA, the PS3 is typically chosen over the 360.

Man you've said some dumb crap before but jesus tap dancing christ. Did you hit your head? Just like Halo sold hardly any consoles neither will Gears 2. Face it, if you want those games you would already have an Xbox.

And forget about your price drop because M$ dont act, they only react. They've had ample time to drop price, they should have done it the day before PS3 launched but no, they only lower their price after Sony does.

And no one ever said 100M PS2 owners would just up and buy a PS3 when GTA comes out, or when MGS comes out or even when FF or LBP, GT5 or KZ come out. It takes time to sell 100M consoles. Something M$ wouldn't know about.

But I'll tell you what. PS3 is getting there alot quicker than XB is. One is building momentum while one is losing steam. And while its not all gonna happen on GTA's back its already obvious GTA is doing more for PS3 by selling more hardware than it is for XB which isnt even that far ahead in software even with your (dwindling) lead in userbase.

How can we be sure that videogaming247.com is accurate, though? I'm familiar with next-gen.biz, they are a reputable and high-caliber gaming site. I don't know much about the other source. If next-gen says they have Pachter saying this, I believe them.

Here's what videogaming247 now says, in light of the new announced prediction:

WII is what parents buy their kids for their birthdays... ages 4+. Wii is what nursing homes buy for the elderly for rehab... WII is what a real gamer buys and figures out its a novelty item because the motion sensing isn't 100% percise. It lags and not to mention graphics look like poo...

So comparing the WII to the PS3 is like comparing your Pinto to someones Ferrari... Im sure more pintos sold, but I am also sure riding in a Ferrari is more enjoyable.
