1 - This is a little overblown.....
Most of those were probably the same guys trying like 5-10 times, and each time they tried to access, the client program probably attempted 5-10 times itself before reporting a failure.
AND most of those guys would not have bought the game anyway.

4 - doubt the numbers but no doubt its been heavily pirated
Fact is the game was cracked with a keygen on day 1 So there are prob more pirates playing than honest peeps...
Personally bought it for the ps3 tho i gotta say the editing tool made it a tempting dl.
This latest blame poor sales on the pirates thing is getting out of hand tho. Some of the best selling games of our generation had no copyright protection at all. Fact is if you make an exceptional game it will sell look at oblivion or even WOW FPS's like UT3 and even more so Cyrix only appeal to a ever dwindling fan base of fps fanatics... Like yours truly :D

If the numbers are true, it's probably because several thousand people tried several hundred different keys. No way it's 40 million separate users.

where live over 2,5 bln. people..
and where it`s normal, when your monthly income is = 3-4 games price, so naturally you will buy food, clothes, but not spend those money on games. )
unless you think, that people there don`t wanna play games, even if they can`t afford them. =)

6 - i call shenanigans............
how can they honestly try to say 40 million attempts to access the server would equal 40 million more sales? thats the most conceded thing i think ive ever heard a developer of a major flop cite as the reason his game failed.
these guys should be working to design a universal digital distribution system to nip it in the bud rather than spending all day b!tching about it. the times are changing and the developers that refuse to keep up will go down in flames.

i dont agree, they didnt say EVERY one of those 40 million would be sales, they are saying it could have sold more than just 1 million, maybe even 1.5 or 2 million, a much larger income than before, lost due to pirateing.

10.1 - "Attempts" are not "People"
Hackers don't give up after 1 attempt. They would try 100s of times. Also, if they are using software to flood the server, 1 man could make 1 million attempts.

Obviously the article writer has got a bit confused over numbers, no way would it be 40 million unique attempts its going to be a lot of retries from the same people but the numbers are still going to be huge and represent a large number which is yet again another reason why the PC format is slowly being dumped by developers in favour of consoles.

People who pirate games are just idiots.
Don't they realise that they are causing the death of the PC game industry?
If I was a game developer I would be sick of losing all that money and just stop developing for PC altogether.

16.2 - I just bought Fallout 1&2
It was only $15. Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics. Seriously you guys can't fork over $15 for a game?
Obviously there should be some statue of limitations on games, like games older than 15 years could be downloaded. At the rate game prices are dropping now it'd be worth nothing anyhow. Supreme Commander was on clearance at Target for $7.98 and that only came out 2 years ago.
But I think the piracy is more of an argument for cheaper games. Why spend $50/60(console) on a new game when there's so many coming out? If the game is cheaper there's not as much as incentive.
I'd personally like to see $40/50 as common prices (not counting sales). CAGcast 117 talks a bit about price of games, if you're interested.

if PC gaming dies like u all hope it does where will the pirates go then? Yes u got it console gaming! it's already happening on x360.
Piracy wouldnt be that much of a problem if most of the games were actually worth it but they arent. we get 3-4 games worth buying from the hundreds released each year.
Make a good game people will buy it.

I think that developers/publishers use this as an excuse as to why thier titles don't sell well.
Free music has ended up helping artists willing to embrace it. It only really hurts those that use a standard top down business model.

anyone who thinks its just pc gaming needs to get a clue, ps3 is so close to being hacked and xbox 360 is a pirates dream....i see over 10,000 people leeching gta4 as we speak and thats just for one day alone! if they want to stop the weekend warrior noob pirates they need to put some effort into stopping or combating torrents.

I bet if they didn't charge for online accounts, people would probably purchase them then and they would make money instead of lose it to pirating. They spend lots of money on their security, but thats the problem. Spend less time concerned and address the issues ina different manner. I would say reduce game prices a little and don't charge for online play, that way you can make money. Yeah sure, its probably not what you want, but at least you would be making alot more then you probably are losing.

I think a lot of people pirated CRYSIS simply cause nobody wanted to buy it to find out if it would actually run on their computers..
simple as that..
hell.. easiest way to have games locked is CD keys.. even STAR CRAFT had em.. make the game copyable.. but have such a strong multiplayer that you need to buy the game..
I bought HL1 to play CS.. i bought HL2 with no hesitation to play the mods.. Hell i bought it twice cause of TF2.. but on PC i don't buy any games really cause i know i won't play em.. I buy all my WII games though..
Piracy is high cause its cheap.. but somethings u can't pirate so people will buy the original..
I mean if someone has a pirated 360 game can they play it online?
for me ONLINE is the major deciding factor if i should buy it.. (on the PC) cause no online then i won't, i'd rather buy a wii game instead.

seriously if 40 million even remotely had any interest in ut3, Epic wouldn't give a crap or rat's ass if they got it illegally, they just wish that many people were interested in their game, they know it was a huge disappointment for pc gamers and the best thing since sliced bread for console gamers, Ut3 failed in their eyes and sold way less than Crysis even when its requirements were way lower,
It all started with the beta, they lied to those thousands of pc gamers that the beta issues and perks were going to be resolved in the full version, tons of pre-orders got cancelled in the first week of release, they thought they could shaft gamers with sweet words, the supposed revised UI patch never came out, the supposed high res textures never came in the full version and gamers were stuck with $50 of a consolized dumbed down rehash of ut2k4 despite Epic hyping the game for 2 solid years to be the second coming and they thought they could actually get away with it,
I wouldn't be shocked that a crack bot was running on their servers to generate random functioning keys for the pirated versions, ergo the multiple attempts, The results are very shady and unsubstantial, they just want to create a media buzz which would give console fanboys and the biased media hard ons since it's pc negative news with all this pc exclusivity thingy, The truth is this is nothing new, the best pc games always ended going to consoles anyway

So any PC title sucks=the poor sales is due to pirate.
Good logic.
