'Ghostbusters' Developer Prefers Working On PS3 First

MTV Multiplayer writes: "We've seen many developers struggle with multi-platform development this generation. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are different technical beasts. Complications with the wildly popular Unreal Engine 3 middleware have made things even more difficult.

Terminal Reality, the studio behind the upcoming "Ghostbusters," spent a lot of time evaluating each console before moving forward with their first next-generation game, Terminal Reality president Mark Randell told MTV Multiplayer at a Sierra media event last month.

In the end, contrary to most teams this generation, they decided to make PlayStation 3 their lead development platform for "Ghostbusters." Here's why."

2 - ps3 dev helps 360
It has been said before that when doing development on the 360 first then working on PS3, it turns out subpar. If dev starts on PS3 first then by the time a 360 version is made it is on par with each other.

So to benefit multiplatform development, PS3 should be lead as it will only serve to make the game equal on both platforms.

To add to this, it has to do with the way the 360 has the memory available to it. PS3 has seperate memory for video and system ram. If a game is made using the unified structure of the 360 (first) it then needs to be recompiled to work in a split memory system of the PS3. That isnt an issue for either platform if the game is made with the PS3 memory system in mind from the beginning.

I think I remember reading devs saying it is easier for the 360 to emulate the memory system of the PS3 than it is the other way around. Someone please elaborate on this for me.

I think it has more to do with how the Cell architecture punishes poor coding more severely than traditional multi-threaded processors. A game lead on the PS3 simply made it more efficient and well-written by default.

Here's a paper that does a very good job of introducing the pros and cons of the cell from a scientific (non-gaming) point of view, but I think it does a good job of highlighting what's so innovative about it:

2.2 - but
if the games are made first in mind with ps3 split memory, them x360 game has split memory too? If a game is made in mind with the unified memory of x360, the x360 wouldn't have better performance? That way xbox360 isn´t struggle?

So it's easier to duplicate the application made for the PS3 versus duplicating the process of the XBox 360? And yet the PS3 is the better system? (so they say) I have YET to see anything that the XBox 360 can't handle on it's system better.

erm not really owned, what he asked was a game that is not possible on the 360, and every game is possible on every system.. even MGS4, who uses around 50GB according to kojima, is possible even on the Wii.. the only thing is, it would have to be stripped down a lot for it to be possible.. and MGS4, uncharted and all are possible on the 360 if its either stripped down, or multiple discs..

so tbh there is not real argument in this question

Erm, yes. It was really an owning. He didn't say the 360 could handle them, he said handle them BETTER. So, that not stripped down, which would nullify your little "so tbh there is not real argument in this question " comment.

I can confidently say that I believe that the 360 could handle each of those games better. If the games were designed for the 360 from scratch and not just an attempt to save money and port a game over from lousy coding on the PS3.

I have STILL seen NOTHING that the 360 can't handle better then the PS3.

"And who owns the rights to the Ghostbusters film? Yes folks, thats right, Columbia Pictures…and guess who owns Columbia Pictures? Yup, thats right, Sony.

And you just ignored to read the response to this from the same page? It takes a lot of fanboy faith to believe there has been an ultimatum on the Ghost Busters gaming license agreement to force the PS3 as the lead platform.

Why must you idiots (quoting you here - in case you don't see the hint) always bend everything as some sort of conspiracy against your console? The developer's words make perfect sense.

the fact that Sony owns the rights to GhostBusters movies doesn't matter tho.. coz the movie makes are only to give a company the rights to make a game.. i mean look at Spiderman 3.. the movie is Owned directly by Sony Pictures.. but it went multi-platform.. i'd bet SCE would have loved to have that game PS3 Exclusive..

There is a possibility that it might affect but firstly the developers should then be lying and secondly there would most likely be some sort of exclusive elements in the agreements as well.

6.3 - Ok and? What does that have to do with this
"We’ve found that writing for the PS3 first and then porting to the 360 and PC is a much simpler and more efficient procedure,” he concluded."

???

The Burnout Paradise people did it that way too and it's equal on both systems. I'm sorry but maybe you like seeing the PS3 get crappy ports but I don't. I don't understand how you think Sony owning the movie rights has to do with them "writing for the PS3 first and then porting it to the 360". It's been repeatedly said that it makes both versions more equal.

6.5 - "reviewers say it runs and looks better on PS3"
they say there is less pop in, and the lighting is different. That is not enough at all to warrant it "running and looking better on the PS3".

That's about the same as saying a car is better than another car because one has dirt on the wheels.

Looking at these 2 screenshots, I would like you to explain them

As you can see, the 360 version looks slightly washed out.

6.7 - @ 360 looks more washed out...
not especially. The 360 version doesn't have as warm a tint to it, but the colors aren't "washed out".

I took the 360 version of the picture into gimp, and changed one setting. I turned down the green/magenta balance to -21, and the colors are EXACTLY the same, with one major exception. The 360 version is quite a bit more detailed than the PS3 version.

edit: I'm trying to attatch the images, but it's not working. Gimme a minute to host them.

edit2: 360: http://img210.imageshack.us...
PS3: http://img156.imageshack.us...

edit 3: since I know someone's gonna see the 360 version is brighter and say it's washed out, here's the same picture with only magenta balance upped 21, and brightness down 19.

8 - Prefers Ps3 because its the weaker machine
If you work on a weaker machine first, you can port the game to other console easily. If you work on a more powerful machine, when you porting the game to other weaker console, you will have to cut down effects.

9 - Is this news?
Didn't we already know it's easier to port from PS3>360 than the other way around? A lot of devs have started doing PS3 first because of that. I'm not sure when they started doing it that way, but I think it was sometime in the last year when the majority switched over.

Doing PS3 first makes a smaller disparity between the games. From the developer/consumer POV, that's 2 games that are good, or one good game and one game plagued with bugs/performance issues.

Remember Virtua Fighter 5 , used to be a Ps3 exclusive RIGHT????
Why is this game looking better on Xbox360 than Ps3?

And "Devil May Cry 4" used to be a Ps3 Exclusive (remember first trailers) It looks sharper and less-aliased on Xbox360 right???

And REMEMBER THE OPPOSITE WAY
LOST PLANET (X360 exclusive TO PS3)
Worse Textures, Worse Effects, Antialiasing is WORSE
any MANY MORE AWFUL THINGS.

GOT OWNED????

The games usually look better when theres been more development time on the game, I find it funny how you forgot to mention OBLIVION, which turned out better on the ps3....because the devs had longer to work on it. Yes oblivion looks very lastgen, 1024x600 and lowpoly charachers and many more. Capcom worked on Ps3 over 1 year and did a worse job than 360 version what do you say for this?

11.2 - @11.1
this isn't an argument about games looking "next gen" you really are just an ignorant fan boy.

You're arguments so far have consisted of saying about games being better in the way they look and or perform. Yet as soon as a multiplatform game is mentioned which does look and play better on the PS3 you change the whole argument into it only being games which look the standard now.

Oblivion is actually quite a good looking game. it's not Uncharted or Gears of War. but then again, the amount of detail for the shear scale of Oblivion was pretty damn good.

You don't belong in the gamer zone, you are a blind fan boy who is willing to say anything to make your system look better. in future keep your ignorant opinions to yourself.

wrong mate. capcom engine is built was built on the pc. it uses directx libraries. its the same engine used in dead rising, lost planet, and devil may cry. Infact Capcom had the least time on PS3.

PS3 uses OpenGL. That 5gb installation is also installing DIRECTX to OPENGL library files.

12 - Not a personal attack on anyone, but
When people say that developing for console A or console B is better or not people either disagree and try to convince themselves that the developers are wrong. I know both consoles have their pros and cons, but at the end of the day if the developers make a great game on either console thats the only thing that matters to me.

Cheers

13 - Stupid argument...
I don't see the reason behind any of this. All games and I mean ALL games have to be coded, worked and developed on the PC. Its not like they devs sit around coding with a PS3. They take a benchmark of the PS3's performance on the PC and then develop the title.

How about this.

Nvidia is happy.

Why because cpu's arent getting much faster, just adding more and more cores.

Nvidia knows that gpu is the future.

Nvidia and intel arguing.

Reason i point this out.

Over a certain rez on pc, does not matter if you have dual or quad.

Once the res is high enough, the graphics card is bottlenecked.

PS3 on the other hand is a good design, because it's different.

As said, 360 is done and dusted. Nothing more to see, i'm not saying it can't produce sweet graphics.

But ps3 is unknown.

I shouldn't say this really.

But once you see Resistance 2 in action, you'll forgot 360 pretty quickly.:)
