No one is surprised, photoshop is an amazing tool but it's just too expensive. No one would be pirating it if there was an affordable price point, or some kind of express version for students like Microsoft does with Visual Studio.

exactly what I was thinking... Software, especially PC related programs are too expensive. Chop that price to something more reasonable and you're still going to have Pirates but more people will be likely to buy... But no surprise it's heavily pirated considering the outrageous price tag...

... and it's probably cause they will just deduct it from their taxes anyway...

Photoshop is wayyy to expensive for the regular home-user, and TBH, WE arent Adobe's target-market. Their target market is business and schools, which will pay cause they can easily afford it, cause they use that software to actually MAKE a profit.
Now, IF I was making a living and Photoshop was an integral instrument to me making that living, I would also just buy it legally (and deduct it from my taxes), but I dont.

However, I do use it, and when I go out and find a job, my new employer will have to pay that license for me to use Photoshop in his office! Now, if I didnt use Photoshop extensively at home, and instead would have learned and mastered a freeware alternative which would allow me to achieve the same results, and THEN join the jobmarket, Adobe would be sjit out of luck, cause my employer could just install that freeware program for me, not pay a dime to adobe, and we would still all be happy (apart from Adobe)

Piracy isnt always bad. In fact, it usually a good thing.

When I was in Kuala Lumpur a while back you could buy pirated versions of EVERYTHING for about a dollar apiece. Some even had archived older versions, so you got 5, 6, 7, CS 1, etc. all on one disc.

There is a completely free program I used to use called Photofiltre (french-made) which is basically the middleground between MSPaint and the full-blown Photoshop.

Photoshop is way too expensive. They should release a PhotoshopLite version for basic editing, including some of the filter effects for finishes. Would be cheaper and better for everyone (including Adobe).

Is anyone surprised by this?

I'm not, frankly...

Most of my classmates couldn't afford Photoshop even WITH their student discount....so they pirate it....it's quite common, and I actually know very few people who have purchased the entire CS suite, price being the reason.

Most beginning graphic designers that NEED photoshop CAN'T afford to purchase it, which is rather absurd...

One thing I have tried recently is GIMP....that free photoshop-clone that comes with Ubuntu-linux...I've found that it works rather well, and the features are near identical.
