GDC: Valve confirms Left 4 Dead left off PS3, moots Source for Wii

Speaking to videogaming247 at GDC today, Valve's Doug Lombardi has confirmed that highly anticipated zombie shooter Left 4 Dead will definitely not be making its way to PlayStation 3, and said that if the company were to tool up for a format outside PC and Xbox 360 it would be Wii.

"We were really crappy at bringing games to consoles," he said. He cited the time it took to move the original Half-Life games to console formats as an example of how the company had come "really late" to console development. He said that while the focus had always been on PC, the company had now moved up a gear to produce games simultaneously on Xbox 360 and PC, but that it had limited interest in developing for Playstation 3.

That is because Valve are douche bags. Their games would sell on the PS3 if they would just quit being fanboy devs.

I highly doubt that he can code for the system. No developer will pass up an opportunity to make money unless they have been money-hatted by a different company. From a business point of view, it makes no sense.

@SRuN4
That link should be a nice start for them. If they are still having problems with the basic stuff Insomniac have simplified for them, they can check the latest cross platform engine from Sony out:

1.6 - The ghost of Gabe Newell lives on at Valve... ;-)
That's just flat out bias or just being absolutely set in their ways to a fault...

Infinity Ward has put together a SOLID cross-platform engine with CoD4. It runs great on Windows, Xbox 360, AND PS3. Valve is just so set in their ways that they don't want to learn how to work with the PS3 architecture.

The 360 is a natural extension from PC/Windows architecture, they didn't have to learn much to adapt from Windows development.

The PS3 is more like a vector processing (SIMD) supercomputer, WAY different from PC/Windows development.

Gabe Newell may not be with Valve in body, but his spirit is still there... ;-)

1.7 - this way need to go to the openzone, but...
Valve can go f**k themselves as far as I'm concerned. Half-life was a great game but thanks to their arrogance and stupidity I'll be avoiding their games in the future.

Well, I think it's more that they can do 360 and PC development in parallel because the code is so similar, but throwing in a PS3 version makes things that much more complicated and increases overall development time.

You can write for the 360 and the PC at the same time, but not for the PS3 and the PC at the same time, because PS3 architecture is significantly different than PC architecture. The PS1 and PS2 were the same way - in fact, they were supposedly a bit worse.

Sony has been working on remedying this issue - there's an article up right now about that very thing:

http://www.n4g.com/events_g...

It's still not as close as 360/PC development, but it's a big step in the right direction.

It would seem so. Guess they do not really like making more profit than they normally would. Oh well, is their loss. They prefer developing only for the system with over 100% piracy activity.

Well, that's it folks. The console war is over. Pack it up - better luck next generation.

...okay maybe not. Looks like a fun game, but not the same level of HOLY CRAP exclusive like MGS4 or FF13. Especially because, like 95% of 360 exclusives, it's also going to PC.

I'll probably get it for the 360 though, if only to avoid cheaters/hackers/etc. that are sure to exist on the PC.

Valve rubbed me with wrong way with how Gabe let the ps3 version of OB go to EA who are known for the terrible ports. HL:2 is one of the greatest games ever and to see Gordon and the gang get abused for a buck...rubs me wrong.

I don't disagree that it was a bad idea to give the ps3 port to EA, but I think we do need to take into account that Valve do tend to be quite slow at developing games (I mean really slow - it took a few years each for the 8hr episodes to be developed and 2.5 years for portal and both were made for an existing engine).

I'm not saying this is a bad thing (although it is frustrating at times, valve have produced some very polished kickass innovative games and I love them for it) but it does mean that they would be spending a long porting it.

It is a shame that they're not doing a ps3 version, but they obviously weren't happy with the quality to which EA shipped the ps3 version of Orange Box and don't want to be associated with another mediocre effort. The ps3 is a top platform and will have a great year regardless of any announcements by Valve.

Also I just wanted to say in response to all the 'learn to program' comments - Valve is a great dev and have done heaps for the industry. They can well and truly program, but they do take their time (this probably accounts for the high quality of their games). I'm sure the source engine *could* work on the ps3, but it would require more time than Valve are willing to invest to do it *right* and to their high standards. In the same time they could have released something like portal2 on pc and the 360. On the bright side - since L4D is a source engine game it should run on pretty old hardware- chances are most ps3 owners will have a comp capable of running it!!

So what you are saying is that the PS3 is the only game system that is selling. That the sales for the Xbox 360 and Wii have come to a screeching halt. I got to give that a LOL.

Edit: I'm getting disagrees? so people believe that the PS3 is the only thing that is selling, and the 360 and Wii are selling 0. Wow, that is just.... Wow.

Valve from their track record are great devs but most PS fans like myself i strongly suspect didn't know this game existed nor cared much about it. Why because PS FPS fans have been occupied with Killzone2 and R2 news rather than a game that was stated as a x360 exclusive from the beginning.

Interesting that fanboys are complaining about Valve not making games for PS3 and how Valve is anti-PS3.

But no one is complaining about Insomniac not making games for the Xbox 360 and is anti-Xbox 360.

I am a PS fan and i don't think valve are being a fanboy. Its obvious that they don't want to spend money on developing for the PS3. They know very well that their type of games do better on the x360. For the wii i believe they are just looking at the installbase. This is fair because i bet you that if it was released for the PS3 it wouldn't sell that much at all. PS FPS fans are much more interested in R2 and KZ2 to care about this game. Those that do might torrent it for their PC

19 - That's kind of wierd
Considering PS3 is closer to PC architecture than the 360. Then again, Valve also has a preference for ATI graphics cards, so go figure. I love their games, but Valve needs to man up. The Orange Box (PS3) could have been a lot better if they hadn't outsourced its entire development to EA.

With Sony giving out comprehensive libraries of code (as well as a multiplatform PC -> PS3 engine) and Insomniac giving free help to other developers, companies like Valve have no excuse to say "It's too difficult."
