Assassin's Creed PC to Have Insane Minimum Specs
39
These specifications are neck-and-neck with Crysis' minimums, even a bit beefier in some respects. If the performance of Crytek's FPS on sub-standard hardware is anything to go by, Assassin's Creed on PC will chug on a system with the aforementioned capabilities.

Ubisoft are terrible at scaling specs for PC, and I mean, come on, Assassin's Creed isn't THAT much of a technical feat. You still have to load between cities, the character models aren't that great..I..
rrg. I shouldn't be so angry, it's not like I dont have a 360 to play it on.

Wasn't this a rumor ? or has the specs been confirmed now ? If so, did UBISOFT really think thoroughly about this before implementing this ? I mean, most people have already played the game on their PS3 or 360. Most PC gamers either have a PC and 360 as well and most likely played the game on it.
And really, how is having out of this world specs going to help this game get picked up by the masses who only have Intel's Integrated graphic cards in their computer and have absolutely no plans of upgrading ?

PMR_21 - he's probably comparing it to you know....other games, say like crysis, which does look better, and has lower system requirements. It should also be noted that games with (arguably) comparable visuals to Assassin's Creed have much lower system specs.
crunchie101 isn't arguing that Assassin's Creed is terrible, merely that the pc system requirements are dis proportionally high when compared to other current gen games

But wasn't it just yesterday that they where saying the hardware has finally caught up and surpassed the gaming industry. Now all of a sudden once again nothing can run these games at full specs.
Hopefully nvidia's new graphics Card will help, or is it just crazy to think that one super high end graphics card can even make a difference at this point.

Yes, PC gaming's still alive, but it is doing far from great. Take a look at Crysis' sales, for instance. They're appaling.
Two major reasons for this:
1) Insane specs, requiring a costly rig (not worth it)
2) Piracy, meaning over half of Crysis owners got it for free.

PC gaming IS dying...not sure why so many disagree with him...
just like above mentioned...looked at sales figures for the biggest release of 2007...
established franchises like Half-life and Unreal also had very underwhelming performances when compared to the console variants (look at the orange box and UT3 console sales compared to PC versions)...
and how well do you think Gears did on the PC compared to the `6 million 360 version?...
and this dates back to years ago...Doom 3, along with Half-Life 2, were touted as the two biggest PC releases of all time...Doom 3 only topped 1 million sales on the Xbox port of the same game (at least as of 2006)...and while Half-life 2 sold over 4 million as of June 8th, 2006...nearly half of that was accredited to bargain pricing on Valve's newly implemented Steam service around that time (that was never confirmed, but retail sales were hovering at roughly 2 million as of early 2006)...
you figure that was back when console online connectivity was relatively young...with only xbl heading that movement (most pc gamers refused to pay additionally for online play, and a lot still do)...
with XBl and PSN both growing at huge rates...you see more and more PC exclusive games making simultaneous releases with consoles...and looking further ahead, it seems more and more PC gamer oriented fps or rpg games are being lead on consoles...bethesda has stated that the 360 has been their lead platform of interest for Fallout 3, a generally PC oriented game...fanbase wise...
name 1 big PC game that has been announced...that has no chance of coming to consoles soon after its release...Quake Wars, UT3, Crysis, and even Bioshock all had horrid sales when compared to the console version of that respective game (crysis and quake wars have yet to have console versions, yet have been nothing but underwhelming sales wise)...
if you think this isn't PC gaming's slow death...I don't know what to tell you...I am not saying PC gaming will stop being around...I am only saying that big PC only franchises and IPs are becoming few and far between...with focus on console development increasing exponentially...PC gaming has not added one dollar to the gaming industry growth for years...its been on a downward slope since the beginning of this decade, give or take a few months with HL2's release...
the days of some of the best games only being on a PC are long gone...its now very infrequent that a PC gets even a timed exclusive...

you guys can call me a moron all you want...but you still have absolutely no chance of standing up to my facts that as a part of the industry, PC gaming is being left in the dust...
ok you pointed out MMOs...forgot about those...10 million'ish have subscribed to WoW, which by far and away blows other MMOs out of the water as far as active users go...
there is also probably 5 million stay at home mom's that can't get enough sims, or online puzzle games, or other stuff...lets include that too, just in case...
and yet every other expensive game (publishing wise, development wise, ad wise, w/e) gets absolutely toasted by console counterparts...
if you jackasses would have read my post correctly in the first place, I didn't say "it was dead"...I said it was "dying"...where did I say it wouldn't be around though?...I was saying that PC gaming is losing its grip on being where the technilogical advances are...game development to get engines like Crysis finished is so high, combined with relatively no payout, it simply won't be happening anymore if this stuff continues...
and alos...fanboi...what is wrong with terming a PC game as a timed exclusive?...I understand there is no money trading hands in such a deal, but it is still exclusive to a specific platform for a specific amount of time right?...so whats the difference?...the PC used to get games in situations like that all the time, over 10 a year...and now what?...is not getting one big release that is specific to only the PC a sign that PCs, as a gaming platform, are doing well?
MS seems to agree with what I am talking about...only they agreed with it back in 1999, before I even knew anything about it (I was happy with Quake III and thought everything would be fine)...research why the Xbox line came about in the first place...you might learn something on what has been happening to PC gaming...

Ubi puts no effort into porting their console games to the PC; that's why the specs for stuff like this, R6: Vegas and Splinter Cell: DA are so insane.
It has nothing to do with how "impressive" consoles are, and everything to do with UbiSoft's laziness.

Yup, when it comes to money- being a pc gamer means putting quite a lot cash into it. But once you get a decent machine, you're going play games with good frame rates for about 1,5- 2 years. And I mean high quality setings. Of course- games like Crysis or (it seems like it) Assassins Creed are power-hungry, but you stil have the comfort of not having to rely on one hardware setup, being able to change diffrent parts. It's an advantage rather than a con. It's also worth mentioning that having one and only one hardware setup- like the consoles- is a good thing, because it's easier to make apps for it, but that is not the point :P. And you can use your PC as a not-only-for-games machine. I'm aware that consoles keep getting those little nifty features like wifi or such, but let's be honest- it's not like on the PC. And that is a good thing, as those are two diffrent pieces of hardware for diffrent people. And it would be the best solution for all of us to be able to afford both the PC and a console. Cheers ;)

These normative statements everyone makes are getting rather tiring.
Judging from the apparent views of many console gamers, they don't really get pc gaming, or PCs for that matter. I'm sure that if I was on the other side of the aisle the opposite would be true too.
Needless to say, the platforms are different and excel at different things. I can saw with no small degree of certainty that my PC, which cost around the same as a PS3 (much less in fact if you factor in peripherals), was a better investment *for me* than a PS3 (or 360) would be.
Needless to say, Apotheosis's statment is particuarly fatuous considering that a poorly optimised port is being discussed.

20 - Hmm..... I will agree with those that said that PC gaming is dying to a point - however
PC gaming is not dead and what needs to happen for the PC market to change is how they look at consumers and gaming/entertainment in general. The console market is evolving at a crazy rate. More and likely consoles will evolve into the home PC (and because of the marketing structure eventually small businesses). How have I come to this conclusion?
Number of events such as a push for open standards (at least when swapping data between machines/programs/OS. The fact that the number 1 office application used (and its not really even given away like some of their products) is also a major player in the console market (Microsoft if you had trouble guessing).
Couple all the above with the fact that the next consoles created either by Microsoft or Sony will be full blown HTPCs and will still blow us away graphically yet still be powerful enough to run any business app used today (including graphical apps). So much so that Console Companies (especially Sony and Microsoft) will try to distinguish themselves by offering even more functions other than gaming (for instance Microsoft's next xbox could offer a rebranded Office 2008 while Sony could continue to push/open up the PS4 to the open source community to fill that gap and perhaps even more (of course there would be the Sony Tax on open source software no freebies - but hey you are getting a $800 to $100 machine for $400 to $500 so stop crying the tax will probable hover around $10 per app or some kind of monthly/yearly subscription for open access (actually that is possible on the PS3 now hint hint Sony - away to still cover for the loss of software royalties but allow those who enjoy or believe in open source software open access to the hardware you can even create business subscription prices as well) Of course it would be optional and will have nothing to do with Sony's PSN Free Open Access gaming - which by the way is working nicely (hint hint Microsoft).
Microsoft will become the Apple of Home Entertainment and Home business (eventually killing to birds with one stone (unless Apple gets their butt in gear and fills the only remaining Huge gap in their Entertainment portfolio - Gaming support) with the emphasis on Entertainment but a capable Home/Small business machine rapped in a console. The new Xbox could easily be tied to their only stand-alone OS, Windows Professional, which is sold to Businesses only on regular PCs (requires license and/ or combo server packages that use both Windows Profession for the Server/Workstation computers and for client machines businesses could use the next xbox (which already comes with Office and seamlessly connects with Windows Professional PC) to save a few dollars and would also help push xbox consoles. Of course if MS went this route PC gaming would all be dead and consoles would be the choice (of course Linux would still be there for the PC/Whatever)
Plenty of Ammo (ideas) for the Consoles to continue competing not only with each other but with PC gaming and PC Home and Small business in general.
Now why did I talk about what consoles could do rather than what PC market should do. I like to get the obvious out of the way. Be interesting to hear what others would think the PC Gaming Marketed would do with the train wreck that is coming to their backyard - consoles.
Should they (PC game developers) throw in the towel and just gravitate to console market or should they stop waiting for the eventual hanging by Microsoft as Microsoft will just focuses entirely on its new xbox and dump PC Gaming. If Microsoft choose the latter of the two choices what would PC Game Developers do to break themselves of the MS yoke that binds them to Windows Gaming on a PC and how could they profit from it?
Thoughts anyone? or is this too deep for N4G commenters?

No, it's not to deep.
Although I put up some useless comments, I do come out and speak seriously sometimes, and I am very often given back very mature responses.
You raise a fair point, however, I will disagree with you.
I don't think Apple has to get into the gaming market, the userbase of gamers is divided enough as it is with 3 consoles. Apple would not be able to fill any niches or bring anything new.
I also don't think Microsoft will become the "apple" of home entertainment. Yes, it offers an IPTV service, and a Video On Demand service, but there are cable and set top boxes that do a much better job, the 360 is great at what it does right now, play games, and offer an intuitive and seamlessly unified online experience.
I do think PC game developers SHOULD make games for consoles. Not all people that buy PC's, play PC games, those that spend thousands on high-end PC's probably also possess the know-how on how to pirate PC games (Not all, but I'll say most do), and those that can't afford High-end PC's will probably not buy PC games since they know it wouldn't run. PC Games are nearly impossible to market. I'm not saying it's impossible, the Witcher sold a million copies, Starcraft 2 will sell millions on millions of copies. I'm just saying, for any average developer, it's next to impossible to build enough hype and momentum for a game with the competition from bigger developers, and the hard to reach demographic.
Console gamers buy consoles to play games, so software developers working on console games know how to market, and build their titles from the get-go. There's only 1 SKU spec they have to comform to, unlike PC's where scalability must be accounted for, and they are generally easier to market in order to obtain a decent mindshare and brand recognition.

For me as a gamer, I've been waiting for at least 5 titles that I want to play on the PC to even think about upgrading my computer. Right now there just isn't any incentive for me to upgrade just for 1 game or 2, and I always want the best video card in order to experience the full potential of the game.
With consoles, everyone has pretty much the same specs , and you can rely on the system to have many different games for years. To me that has more value.
