Rumor: Assassin's Creed PC System Requirements

Exophase.com writes "A reliable anonymous source has sent along details on the system requirements for the PC release of Assassin's Creed. The specs look rather demanding and it's clear that you'll need a Crysis-capable PC to run Assassin's Creed in its full glory on PC.

Minimum System Requirements:
* Windows XP or Vista
* 2 GB RAM
* Dual core processor (Intel Pentium D or better)
* 256MB Direct3D 10 compatible video card, or Direct3D 9 card compatible with Shader Model 3.0 or higher
* DirectX compatible driver
* DVD-ROM dual-layer drive
* 16 GB free hard disk space
* DirectX libraries (included)
* Vista compatible sound card
* Keyboard, Mouse
* Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller (optional)

Recommended System Requirements:

Agreed. I estimate over a thousand dollars for all these things needed to play the game on PC. You can either pick up a PS3 or a PC for the same experience if not even better.

Over the years, console game developers have developed special tricks and workarounds to the RAM limitations of modern-day consoles. These include streaming data dynamically off the disc and from installed hard-drive cache as needed, and maybe a few more loading points/chokepoints.

This game proves that the 512mb RAM limitation of consoles is not quite comparable or equivalent to what 512mb on the PC would be. Two completely different developmental platforms.

Streaming would work on PC as well, and even better. They usually have faster HDs and you need to install that game anyway. Maybe higher texture resolution and more geometry requires more RAM ? Or textures are uncompressed, while the consoles use compressed textures ? (and their additional CPU power to decompress ?)

I can't really see how AC streams on the PS3. It still takes forever to load a level. If streamed, shouldn't those load times be gone?

16GB, WTF!? Seriously, why PC games take so much space? Stranglehold also was a huge HDD eater if I'm not mistaken. Hopefully not all of this true. If so then many of my PC gamer friends can't play this masterpiece (Yes, I know it is flaw and many hate it but not only I don't hate it, I believe it was really misunderstood and is a true gem).

I think the 16GB space requirement includes the amount of space you need to install it (copying over temporary files from the disc and whatnot).

As for the system requirements they're kind of ridiculous, which seems to indicate that they're just using some sort of lazy software-based emulation as opposed to optimizing it for the PC.

yeah I think its the same as Stranglehold were the installation needed that amount of HDD for unpacking and all that but the finished installation was not even half of that

what I don't like is that they don't clarify that, basically why not put the space it needs to install and the space it will use once installed since just putting the first might be misleading to some

I highly doubt that any desktop PC configuration, even the highest-end one, is capable of "emulating" a 360 game. That simply wouldn't be technically possible at this point in time, PCs haven't advanced to even close to that level yet.

@Statix: that is the problem they cant and yet devs continue to do it, look at Capcom for example ALL of their PC versions of console games have been direct emulation from the respective console and that is why they have been so clunky and required BRUTAL system requirements (for the time) specially for the quality(tech) of the game and how they didn't even let you tweak the video options, again I wouldn't be surprised the PC version of DMC4 was yet again a direct emulation of the 360 version that run poorly and required a lot of hardware

@Ju: I dont understand the "theory" par since for example Capcom has been doing it since 1996 with he first Resident Evil for the PC

well to explain simple first I must assume you are familiarized with the whole Emulation term (Hardware and Software) and explaining it in the most basic and rough terms possible is the method of not porting the game (porting for example PS1 code to make it PC code) but in keeping almost all PS1 code and create a software based emulator that will make this PS1 code think its running on a PS1 on your PC resulting in an experience extremely similar to the console and having all the problems with it for example few mouse support, not having or having VERY limited ability to tweak the setting of the game (for example the PS1 RE for the PC support very few low resolution options) the only way to exit the game is with alt+F4 or some F command, the menus are most of the times carbon copy of the console version of the game and usually the video or audio options are few and are again moved to F commands instead of being in the menu we also have the hardware consumption cuz by the law of emulation you need a hardware several times stronger to run an emulation for the original hardware that is why back in the day people called the PS1 emulator a hardware hog even if the specs of that PC were vastly better than those of the PS1

if you need a more hands on approach to the thing try getting a PC version of any of the Capcom games you will know EXACTLY when I am talking about with console emulation but remember this is not such a common practice among western developers specially now a days but mostly something of japanese devs and their PC "ports" (Capcom still does it look at RE4 and DMC3 for the PC) but we are not ruling out western devs are making it too but they are at least smarter to conceal it and generally make it a more enjoyable situation like giving you all the commodities of a PC game

I would like to know, why, if you have a DirectX API and an underlying Windows operating system (or API) on both platforms, one would implement an emulator, rather then using a compiler and a unified API instead. I would also assume, porting from the 360 - a winxp-embedded/dx9/big-endian/ multicore/multithreaded system - to a WinXP/dx9/little-endian/[singl e-or-multicore]/multithreaded system aka "the PC" is less effort, then say, writing a triple-core-powerpc emulator, which runs reasonable fast on a single core x86 machine. This is actually beyond me.

Sure there are some challenges. EDram AA is not available on the PC, big vs. little endian could cause headaches (not if you design it right, though), SSE vs. VMX, maybe but can be worked around that - even with macros, its not to bad - and threading, if done right would run on one core as well as mutlicores, especially if you'd run the same OS/API/middleware. So, well, I would really know, how the PC would emulate a 360 - and why.

Logically, that doesn't make sense. So will you be able to crank DOWN the visuals and settings? Wouldn't that make the minimum requirements far lower than what they are?

I think the most likely scenario is that this is a straight-up, cut-and-dry port of the PS360 game, by Ubisoft, with little to no enhancements. And an unoptimized one, at that, judging by the system requirements.

Because I already have a quad core and 8800 series nvidia, chances are I shall be playing this at higher resolution with higher framerate than I would on a 360/PS3. Seeing as the PS3 suffers from slowdowns (look at the reviews) & the 360 manages a steady ~30 fps. Plus quicker loading times on the PC without the stupid jet engine drive noise(360).

TBH I might be tempted to get a 360 again when the 65nm GPU comes out(after my first one broke repeatedly, which just got passed on to someone - I'm not touching it).

The new 65nm GPUs won't make a difference, that's just MS trying to ditch their association with the colour red.

I don't think the RRoD problem will ever go away, without a complete redesign of the hardware itself. Expect to see these issues resolved (maybe) in the next incarnation of the Xbox, most likely to be named the 720.

Also, yes, if you already have a PC of that power then , yes, I would recommend the PC version, but I can't imagine how much you had to pay for all that, and expecting people to pay £1000 (give or take) for a gaming PC is a little unfair on most people's bank accounts (like mine).

In that respect, console gaming is far better value.

I know a guy who's getting this for PC... he was really confident that the PC version would be the best for him, and he may be right, but he's got 2gb of RAM, which would be fine, but unfortunately he's running Vista. He's also got a Dual core running at about 2.5Ghz and an ATI graphics card with about 512mb of graphic memory.

Will he be able to run this game fine, because I know Vista takes up like half of your PC's RAM for next to no reason...
