Assassin's Creed 2 PC version leaked

Much like Assassin's Creed before it, Ubisoft's latest PC release has been leaked to Torrent websites.

The leak is a complete DVD image of the game, sourced from the Russian release of the game. It will likely not be long before an English version appears. Of course, there is still no crack to pass the new DRM system that Ubisoft has implemented, so it is unclear if the leaked copy is actually playable.

Not that I have any intention of buying this... heck, I wouldn't even bother wasting my bandwidth if Ubisoft offered it completely legally for free. But damn, I hope someone manages to crack it before release. That would make me laugh so hard.

Yeah, well Steam is very good at fudging their numbers for the top 10 bestsellers to get more people to see the game.

I think they go by price, not by volume. I refuse to believe AC2 is up there legitimately, because CoD: MW2 has been a top 10 bestseller since it came out. How many people do you know bought that game?

Ubi made things harder for its loyal and legit customers while the pirates doing their thing.

They made that super stupid DRM for AC2 which forces legit PC gamers to be online in order to play any mintue of the game but now pirates are enjoying the pirated version earlier and without such annoyences.

Usually I feel bad for developers when these sort of things happen but the security implemented in AC2 seems a little over the top.
All it does is ruin the experience for the legitimate users, and unfortunately for Ubisoft the hackers will hack it.

I wonder if it's as simple as pointing their server to 127.1.1.0 in the hosts file. It would be silly if that actually worked.

I believe you mean 127.0.0.1 (which is localhost).

This wouldn't work though and that would appear the same to the game as if the user had no internet connection at all (and the game REQUIRES it). Most likely solution will probably involve small code changes that bypass the online factor entirely.

This is entirely doable as the game isn't running OFF ubisofts servers but rather simply synching with them (to annoy consumers), so unlike a case like WoW where we need to emulate a server we could actually get entirely around the online factor in the long run.

I'd say in a week or so some random Russian cracker'll have done it or at least made genuine progress.

Ubisoft's DRM appears to have been cracked on Silent Hunter V and Assassin's Creed 2. So much for that brilliant idea LOL.
