Dead Space 2 'more action than horror'

CVG: Dead Space 2 will feature less horror and more action that its predecessor, according to developer Visceral Games.

The studio - whose Dante's Inferno hits UK stores on Friday - said it has a dedicated team working on DS2 and that the new game would "empower" players.

DS was pretty much a horror game in the first 2-3 chapters, after that it wasn't scary anymore for me at least.
I doubt they can keep the horror pace through whole game.

couldnt agree more, dead soace was such a welcome suprise and defo in my top 5 if not top 3 games this gen! they go down the more action route then its a no buy from me too! i mean the first had planty of action anyway! you think they wanna increase sales by reducing the age rating or something? such a shame! what other horror games we had this gen? the only decent franchise and they ruin it already! i wish they would do a project zero ps3 game! man id be all over that, loved those games!

Nothing can maintain being scary for 10-12 hours because the surroundings become too familiar. What DS did brilliantly was maintain scenarios that had people on the edge of their seats. Even in the later chapters the player has heighten levels of readiness going through doors and around corners. You don’t actually have to experience fear for the game to continue working.

And don’t get me started on the Sound! DS should have been awarded Oscars for its use.

totally agree with you. Dead Space was actually my favorite new IP this gen and it was my personal game of the year for 2008 above gears 2 and resistance 2.

it's a shame they have gone down this path.

they could have dominated the horror scene, but by doing this they will now have to compete with all the other action games out there.

I am really sad at the thought of this, I suppose it was too good to be true.

Dont forget that some of the people responsible for the first dead Space went away to activision .

That should have been a first clue things would be the same . That and the decision to do Dante's inferno .

And EA most likely want it to sell far more than DS1 , hence the action and co-op idea.

Of course then , when or if they fail again to sell as much as they want (as if 1.5 million unit for a new horror ip was a failure , but hey that's EA's greed for you , along with people deciding that 1 million isnt a lot anymore , based on max 5-8 games selling in the range of 5 each year)

My uncle was the floor manager for the developers at EA and helped make most of the guns in the game and he left and took a bunch of the dead space team to Namco. He loves when i tell him how much Dead Space kicked ass because it was his final game at EA. I doubt he's spiteful but ill tell him how they seem to be ruining it now and that will probably piss him off.

They make a great survival horror game and it sells 1.5mil. And then along comes a trashy action game from an established IP that dismisses its roots and sells 5mil copies. Don't blame them, blame the sheep that didn't buy it. Can't say I blame the stockholders or publishers who look at the bottom line. I not only bought DS but supported the devs by downloading the 5 animated shorts & by purchasing the movie on BR. I absolutely appreciate any developer (i.e. Bioware, Bethesda, EA Redwood, and even Ninja Theory) that attempts to create a mythos surrounding an IP.

Too bad more people love to hit X to skip any story whatsoever and get to "teh killin" rather than wondering why we're killing in the 1st place.

Don't know why you're getting disagrees, RE5 sucked. 4 was OK, but when I look back on all the different locales you visited over the course of the game, it became apparent that they really weren't sure what they were doing overall.

Sure, have action segments in the game, but keep the stuff that made the game unique, such as the Zero G and the bits in the vacuum where you couldn't hear the enemies coming.

I got the BR movie as well and I actually downloaded a few of the DLC for it as well, something i never do. it's the only game i own that i have bought that kind of DLC for.

I bought dead space day one. Res5 i tried the demo and deleted it after 10 min.

dead space was one of the best and most flawless games this gen. no bugs, no glitches, it was graphically underrated in my opinion.

anyway,I guess we all should accept that the gaming industry has changed.this will happen for a long time unless something big change this.making games have become more expensive than before.publishers expect high sales.its almost a bet now to create a unique game.sadly,shooters sell these days and that's what they all think.if a publisher had 3 games to pick: shadow of the colossus 2,okami 2 or call of duty 6 which game do you think they will publish? the first 2 games will satisfy true gamers but won't sell like another call of duty.publishers don't care about satisfying,they care about sales! and I'm afraid that this will contine in the next PS pr xbox console unless something big and dramatic happens.in the mean time,expect every genre to almost die and expect to see rpgs, adventure,action,etc... games to turn into shooters or having some shooting elements.I wouldn't be surprised to see sports games using guns as well in the future XD

the horror part of ds is what made me love the game so much. i never been so scared playing a game the sounds just added so much atmosphere. If dead space 2 is less scary im not buying because it just becomes another third person shooter

They are destroying a very good element that was well known for this game. Yeah the first game was scary, but I was brave enough to play right through it because I love the scary elements of the game from beginning to end. We had enough action games we need more horror we don't need something like master chief blasting through the nercomorphs with a rocket launcher. It sounds like the Lead Game Designer is scared of the first game. Remember reading the Dead Space 2 edition of Game Informer, when he said something about people playing dead space for 30 minutes a day, and not able to play it because it was too scary? It sound like those people was him LOL!!! "Oh Im afraid of this game let me make it an action game instead." This is why almost ever game and movie sequels fail, because of that same crap everybody follow more action, darker, edgier, and less of the element it was known for that made the original standout.

This is totally RE5 all over again.. Why do developers have to completely screw up great franchises? That's like taking the parkour out of Mirror's Edge and making it all about shooting, or taking out the RPG aspect of Mass Effect. It's just something that you don't do, ever.
