TT: Windows 7 BETA vs Windows Vista SP1 SSD Performance Compared

TT writes: "The topic of SSDs itself is rather interesting, but when you team up the increasingly popular flash memory technology with Microsoft's next operating system, Windows 7, things move up to the next notch on the excitement level - for us around here, anyway - but probably you too, if you are reading this."

I'm currently running this "free upgrade" on my Laptop, and (almost) everything is running fine, and smoothly.

Hope they don't "overfix" and break it before the actual release. It would be nice to finally see an improvement (especially in speed) in a new OS release. Also this faster SSD, and promised size reduction means, it's coming to netbooks too. This may finally convince me to buy one. (As long as it has a viable graphics chip).

(Can't try games on my underpowered laptop, but it's told that Widnows 7 runs games faster than Vista or XP on same configuration,... nice)

As long as it doesn't gobble a GB of RAM this time around, I'm fine with a new OS. Although, I'm starting to become fond of Vista, despite all the haters. It's got, at the least, a fair interface.

So you'd buy a fridge and only use 50% of it to store things? No.

RAM is the same. Vista superfetches programs and holds them in RAM to allow them to start quicker. If a program asks for the RAM, Vista will free it up for use.

When the PC starts running out of ram I've seen Vista using up less than 200 mb of ram (on my laptop).

Windows 7 become more aggressive at pushing things out of ram to a page file, and a bunch of people say "ohh, less ram used, Windows 7 is best." They're only looking at half the picture.

Windows 7 will be good. But Vista is NOT bad.

So far my windows 7 beta is going smooth, the Ram usage and CPU usage is very low and allows for my programs to open up faster, and even shut down time is much faster.
