Battle.net 2.0 Rumors

Diii.net has received a hot rumor about the major changes coming to Battle.net as Blizzard upgrades their game hosting service to support the upcoming Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 titles. An excerpt:

"When D3 comes out, Blizzard will be making major changes to battle.net. All players will have a universal battle.net account for all games. They will start selling a $6 key chain with a digital face that updates every 10 minutes or so with a new 11-digit number. That 11-digit number will be your password. This will make it nearly impossible to keylog or bruteforce accounts."

It's long been confirmed that Blizzard has a huge customer service and support center in Austin, and they repeatedly mentioned the big upgrades and security fixes coming to battle.net with SC2 and D3, plus the recently implemented the code scrambling device for WoW accounts. So this is a pretty believable rumor, as far as rumors go.

Leord5759d ago

Yeah, at this point, most of Battle.net 2.0 is still speculation, except for the little things they might have said by mistake.

Thinking that they are aiming to have the best gaming network in the world when it launches is probably not unlikely though. (whether they succeed is another question, but chances are that they will)

thehitman5759d ago

key thing sounds stupid for a game. I dont want my password changing every 10minutes.... thats really annoying and if you lose ur key-thing then ur basically screwed beacuse not only can you not recover your password but you have to go buy a new 1 and prob do some extra things just to log in. That would really suck.

Leord5759d ago

That probably won't be mandatory. The WoW keyring was sold out within a day on the Blizzard Store page. I think a lot of people will use it.

ry-guy5759d ago

I'd buy the keyring.

I think that would be a neat feature that could go a long way. A new way of battling computer piracy.

Sprudling5759d ago

I've bought the WoW keyring since I prefer to be 100% safe rather than 99%.
It only takes 5 secs extra to login.

Skerj5759d ago

Wow, implementing key fobs in a game is a sign of some serious sh*t. Entropia Universe has one and that's because people buy ingame islands for $29k and stuff.

Odion5759d ago

I am telling you right now that it will be a cold day in hell when I pay for Battle.Net

rossifranklin5759d ago

Why would they charge to play D3, I've never seen any statement by Blizzard that would suggest this. Battle.net is likely to remain free as it's always been (WoW is not part of Battle.net .) If D3 has the same security and what not as WoW, doesn't mean it will cost.

The Greatest Video Game Comeback Stories in Gaming History

Who says a dud game can't have a video game comeback?

Cyberpunk and No Man's Sky have to be up there. We're lucky and cursed, equally, to have games that can be updated now. For folks old enough to remember the Sega/SNES into PS1 and even 2 eras, if a game came out that was half baked (*cough*Angel of Darkness*cough*) that was it, no redemption. At the same time, having the option for updates shouldn't be an excuse for half assing games.

thorstein94d ago

I remember when the Nintendo Seal of Approval meant something.

All those games had to release without bugs.

Comebacks shouldnt be a thing in videogames. Just saying.

$15 horse for WoW made more money than StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty

Jason Hall, currently an indie developer and former Blizzard employee, has been sharing some really interesting stories from his long career in the industry for a while now. Some of them are truly insightful, while others may seem depressing.

I’m a little shocked that StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty sold only around 6 million copies. The original StarCraft did over 11 million. Maybe Blizzard was too leisurely in releasing StarCraft 2? Starcraft 2 came out 12 years after it’s predecessor.

Plague-Doctor27171d ago (Edited 171d ago )

Im surprised too. Starcraft was still a huge name in 2010. It was kinda the only new RTS around and other genres like MOBAs hadn't really kicked off yet. I do remember at the time sentiment around the game was
pretty angry the game was being split into 3 but I doubt that would have impacted sales to that degree

Sciurus_vulgaris171d ago

For a long time I believed StarCraft II sold on par or better than its predecessor. There was so much hype for the game. Plus it had a pretty strong E-Sports scene for a few years.

Myself and half a dozen friends all bought StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and played it religiously for a full year. While I bought the expansions, most of my friends did not. RPGs seem to be a generally low selling genre.

Nerdmaster171d ago

I'm not shocked at all. This was an early example of Blizzard being greedy. Instead of releasing a complete experience, splitting Starcraft 2 in 3 parts so it could make us purchase it 3 times if we wanted to know the whole story and play story mode with the other races.

Sciurus_vulgaris171d ago

I originally had that stance. However, Wings of Liberty, was just as long, if not longer than StarCraft 1. The expansions were of decent length too and added a good amount of additional content.

il-JumperMT171d ago

and people wonder why we are having mtx in everything. i blame the people who actual buy them.

Nerdmaster171d ago

It's interesting he used Brazil as an example of the importance of regional pricing. Nowadays many companies on Steam are setting their prices in Brazil as high as, if not more than, their price in USA. I simply refused to buy a few games when I noticed that's the case.

This right here is the fucking problem.

Diablo III - Still a Huge Draw in the Face of Diablo IV

Diablo III still works on modern PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and remains hugely playable a decade after initial release.

Palitera403d ago

Are you comparing a continuously improved 10+ years old masterpiece with the... beta of an unreleased game?

kevco33402d ago

Heh, yeah. There's no comparison in here! Its a commentary on how III is still very playable over a decade later.
