DS and Wii back on top in Japan

DS sales rose significantly following the release of chart topping Dragon Quest IV, while Wii ousted PlayStation 3 as the home console of choice for the week ended November 25.

Nintendo's handheld shifted almost 120,000 units, driven by the release of Dragon Quest IV, which obliterated the competition in the latest Japanese software chart. It was a good week for Sony's PSP also. Generallly stuck around the 60,000 units per week mark over the past month, the PSP sold in excess of 75,000 units.

After two weeks as the home console of choice, PlayStation 3 sales dropped below those of Nintendo's Wii, but not by much. Less than 4,000 sales separated the pair.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 also sold relatively well, by its own standards, shifting over 7,000 units.

For now, I think Wii has most of the world, followed closely by PS3 in Europe and Japan, and 360 in the U.S.

360 will come in third since it sells next to zero in Japan and the sales in Europe will amount to 10 million tops through this generation. The most that any system will sell in America is 45 million which is proven by the PS2 and since no system will dominate like PS2 no one will sell more than that.

Adding that up that's 60 million max that the 360 will sell. They also have nothing better to offer than Bioshock, Halo 3, and Mass Effect in 2008. Gears 2 is the 360's only title that will sell systems for them in 2009.

Ps3 outsold the wii for the entire month in total sales... I love how the forget to mention that bit of news. They also did it by some 40 thousand units. I then loved how they tried to make the xbox 360 look good by saying it sold well... hahahaha... Yeah, sure thing. Ps3 is outselling it 2 to 1 in Europe and 10 to 1 in Japan... The u.s. market is Sony's next target. Next month we'll see the ps3 out sell the wii in Japan for the total month again too. More/better software on the plate for Sony over there.

i must have misses something put in europe the ps3 sold 80 tho and 360 was 67 tho how is that 2:1 last month please tell me my maths must be off there, dont say stuiped comments like that,

ps3 is selling well in japan
its selling ok in europe but only 15-20 tho more than 360 plus not in the uk and france.
america is a diff story.

ps3 sales are getting higher, be happy with that but get ur facts right before saying 2:1 in europe

No, the PS3 is still outselling the Wii, remember? It was the start of a shift and the Wii was never going to be back on top.

All the PS3 fanboys were claiming victory for the PS3 like they were for the PSP. No one forgot anything, because its about one week.

Unless you want them to point out the PS3 outsold the Wii for one month, which means it is outselling the Wii by a small margin 8% of the time, though earlier in the year, the Wii outsold the PS3 6:1 for the same period of time.

See, though, I think only the numbers now are needed, not a complete history of how the Wii has done so well in Japan, with one little hiccup.

Im going to make acomment for the simple reason that at this point in time i have nothing to do. Who cares at the moment in terms of overall sales its wii, xbox 360 , ps3 why do you all keep arguing over the same thing thing just disguised in a different article, when it changes drastically which i expect it to do by the end of 2008 then argue but for now stop going over what everybody already knows

and gameblow offer me proof that 360 is getting sold 2-1 in europe and i mean hardfacts and then show me an overall worldwide chart and im a simple kind of man so i want numbers not percentages.

Well, int's common knowledge and since you all lvoe to use VGcharts for evidence... Since they inflaited the xbox 360 sales for October and you all didn't mind... Look at the total number of units sold for ps3 in Europe... they are far surpassed that of the xbox 360 and have been for the last 2 months. Germany, France, Spain... The lead paltform is the Ps3 by leaps and bounds. Not lies... simple facts.

First you say Nintendo is creating false demand by shipping a lower amount of Wiis to retailers, and then you turn around say that Sony is are on par with the Wii.

Which is it? Are we to blame Nintendo or give Sony credit. I know it's not all PS3 fanboys who say this but it's enough to point out.

They claim whatever is good at the moment. It annoys me, really, that for the last few weeks, they have claimed victory for the PS3 and said Japan was never going to go back to the Wii.

It's terrible fanboyism. Now, I'll give crdit where credit is due. All the consoles have their ups and downs.

I wonder how many PS3 fanboys will give credit where credit is due, though, and admit that they were wrong, the PS3 isn't keeping up with the Wii in Japan (brag about Europe if you want, but not Japan).

Fanboys will claim what they want when its good for them. Mark my words, when Nintendo gives us a hard drive for the Wii, I'm going to be all over that, though I only have a Wii...and why not tell it how it is when "your" company does something bad?

But, we'll see, I suppose, if the fanoys ever come around.

By the way, I think the Giants are going to the Super Bowl...I want to see Manning vs Manning again, and the Giants are looking pretty good, suddenly.

But going by that one preformance would be like judging the PS3 sales from just the last month in Japan! He'll bounce back, I'm sure. Overall, he has looked good this year, including in most of their losses.

dragonquest just came out on ds and the ds is no where near doubling psp sales.

like others and myself have said before the big hitters aren't out yet.

Dragonquest was the no.1 wanted game in japan. no.2 is ffxiii.

i couldnt believe the ps3 actually managed to oustell the wii at all recently.

as always PS3 fanboys with a short victory which means nothing unless your consistent and I don't see where PS3 sales or the sale of games have been anything near consistent since launch.

just smoke and mirror price drops and after the smoke clears, your back and 3rd place overall.

Kid I'll give sony props when they consistently top in every month.

sony have only spiked a couple of times since launch.

1.At launch
2.60 Gig Cleareance Sale(somehow they are still around)
3.Introduction of the "GIMPED" PS3 The 40 gig.

That's all folks, I have not seen Game titles sell the hardware as much as it should. While We Wait and see in 2008 how well the games will sell the hardware.

eitherway you look at it The Wii and 360 have been consistent in sales and the 360 morso in software sales. Well till the next SPIKE PS3 fans.

14 - regarding to Japanese sales records

FYI, there are two different sources for sales records in Japan. One is media-create, and the other is Famitsu.

I'm not sure the reason, but media-create counts PS3 and PSP fewer everytime. On the other hand, Famitsu counts more.

Few days ago, Famitsu announced PS3 won 3 weeks in a row. However, today Media-create announced PS3 won only 2 weeks as this article described. I don't know which one is the truth. I just say don't believe both. ;-)

I'm a PS3 fanboy, so I'm being looking forward to seeing a news from Famitsu like PS3 won 4 weeks in a row. :-)

do you people actually take a look at the charts?And compare them with last week's sales?I dont think so.Yes, it was outsold by wii,but lets not forget not so long ago it was being outsold by 6:1 in japan.
The ps3 is now unbeatable in japan.Like it or not its tru.Jumping from 10k per week to 50k per week is something.The wii merely outsold it anyways.

Think about this.

If A sells 6 games for every 1 that B sells for a period of four months, assuming a month is 30 days, by month's end, A would have sold 720 games and B would have sold only 120 games.

Now, for the next month, B outsells A by 2:1. At the end of that month, A would have sold only 30 games, and B 60 games.

Now, B clearly outsold A for that month, but B HASN'T taken over.

So far, A has sold 720+30 = 750 games.
B has sold 120+60 = 180

Half of 750 isn't even close to 180. In fact, half of half of 750 is still more than 180. B hasn't taken over anything.

Heck, B could outsell A by 2:0 for the next two months and it would still not take over. Get it? B has a loooong way to go.

Now replace A with Nintendo and B with Sony.

I tried to get it as simple as I could. Hope that basically clears it up for you PS3 fans.

Oh, so there you was Xbots... We missed you for the last... 3~4 weeks? Month? Whatever... Be welcome back.

Anyway, November was a good month, but December really has nothing to Japanese which I remember (well, GT5 Prologue, but it's not the real deal, so I don't expect this to sell like crazy)... Let's see how it turn out to be on January/February... White Knight Story, Soul Calibur 4, Tekken 6, maybe even Little Big Planet, all those are coming early next year for Japan, while the Wii has... mini-games? Oh, and Devil May Cry by March (or was it February?)...

If Silent Hill 5, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Last Ramnant make it to April/May, then Wii will really have a hard time over there... Nintendo make a good lead in its first year, but Sony has the chance to take back a good part of those PS2 owners with such games, specially over Japan. You can just throw GTA IV there for western.

That's what people don't get, if about 10% of PS2 owners around the world decide to switch for PS3 in this 6 months (putting december, cause it's xmas, and here would star), it's like getting +10 million adopters... Obvious it's not easy thing to do, specially with the (deserved) bad press on PS3 'till first half 2007, people will think twice... But still, it's possible for Sony, cause they already hooked this people before with some of those games. And if yu look a bit more far, Resident Evil 5 to come, Final Fantasy XIII to come, God Of War III to come...

i will never understand how everyone loves this DS... I mean sure its cheap but... the PSP is a hundred times better! Web browsing, multi-media, better graphics, no touch-screen gimmick, PS3 compatability.... the PSP and PS3 are like all the greatest electronic things to ever exist combined into two!! Of course, it's useless without a TV >.>

Anyways... must DS always be on top? I want to know how much $$$ nintendo is making off the ds >.<
