Blu-ray: Exclusive new "Groundbreaking" features in "High-Definition Event of the Year" from Disney
58
Disney is touting its November 6 Blu-ray DVD release of Pixar's Cars as the "High-Definition Event of the Year," with plans to include several "groundbreaking" interactive features on the disc including picture-in-picture. One of these will be a "Car Finder" game in which viewers "race the clock" to find one of 214 models of cars hidden throughout the movie. Also including the revolutionary "Cine-explore" feature.
A trailer for interactive features is online at http://disney.go.com/disneyvideos/bluray

I guess this is Blu-ray's answer to HD-DVD's pic-in-pic from 300. Disney is really a big supporter of Blu.

Walt Disney knew how to hunt down jews & commies! And how to animate. But I think most of us will remember him as a proud member of Team McCarthy!
*Note to people with no sense of humor - This is meant to be ironic. I do love Mickey Mouse, and I adore Justin Timberlake and Britney spears just as much as you do*

Disney is really doing a lot for Blu this year because along with Cars, there is Pirates Of Caribbean 3 coming to Blu-ray.

4.1 - Says who?
You?
Most people aren't that in tune with advanced tech like us geeks, and the majority of people are thinking about the stuff they need as opposed to luxury items like a Blu-ray player. I'm fortunate to have a PS3 and a 360 w/ HD-DVD, but that's because I can afford it and I pay attention to the tech involved with these systems. The VAST majority of people are still stressing about getting an mp3 player or digital camera, and won't be thinking about a Blu-ray player or HD-DVD player for another few years.
"Cars" having pic-n-pic or a mini game in it isn't going to send people clamoring for a PS3 or a Blu-ray player. This is obviously good news for Blu-ray to get some of these interactive features like HD-DVD has, but it's hardly the deciding factor in people moving towards the next gen movie formats.

5 - Groundbreaking?
HD DVD's been doing picture in picture for over a year, how is this groundbreaking? Besides, they are faking it, it is not using dual video decoding like HD DVD, instead they are making it a 50 GB disc and printing the movie twice, once with the normal movie, once with PiP. The difference with HD DVD is that on most discs, you can turn the PiP on and off in real-time.

Why did you try to turn this into an anti-ps3 discussion? This is how HD-DVD is so outpaced in the US (the only market their is a format war, everywhere else hd-dvd is almost non existant), and how blu-ray is the exclusive format of choice for a vast majority of the movie industry. Not to mention having more players (whether they're independent or ps3s is inconsequential, its a means in which to play the format).
HD-DVD can't win, Blu-ray controls too much. Which format is superior is meaningless.
PS3 vs. 360 is fun still, but this format war is just getting dumb. HD-DVD will be absolutely dead before '09.

12.1 - Wow,
This is extremely misleading. They do not have 7 - they have 2 that have 7 shelf names.
You will say they have Buena Vista and Disney. I will say they have Disney. Why? - because Disney is Buena Vista. You can spin it however you want, but it's still only one company backing it.
You will say Columbia, Tristar, MGM, and Sony. I will say they have Sony. Why? - because Sony is Columbia, Tristar, and MGM. You can make 1 company sound like 4. The truth is, it's 1.
Give me a movie count Mr. 7 backing studios. How many movies are on each format. I would hope that with your logic that it will be around 7:1 in favor of Blu-Ray, but I know it's not.
With all that crap and garbage "spin" aside, movie studios will migrate to the other, winning format eventually. The truth is, it's too early to call a winner, but you Sony guys get on here and claim everything as the nail in the coffin. Truth of the matter is, HD DVD sales are picking up faster than Blu-Ray sales. The initial PS3 launch propelled them into the lead where they have stayed, and the recent clearance sale gave them a spike, but it will soon be back to square 1 at $600, and lack of sales. It will be in this time when HD DVD plays catch up and it is going to happen. Why do you give a rat's a$$ if Blu-Ray wins? Do you own stock in Sony? I guess you do if you have a PS3. If Blu-Ray fails, your 10 year system just became obsolete. Hell mine is already obsolete. I never use it.

12.2 - It's beyond misleading...
and you sony guys have to SERIOUSLY stop tooting your BR horn with childish remarks because if i were a BR fanboy, i wouldn't be talking smack. 60/40 split out of a total 5% market share isn't something to brag about. that's TINY advantage in a TINY market share. to top it off, when you include ps3s as BR players there should be a massive dominance right now and we all know that's not true thanks to the sales figures and the fact stand alones are being sold more on the HD DVD side (maybe BR fans are waiting for the new BR standards due out soon to be included in the newer players, i dunno). both formats are great and thus people are buying both formats and players. many, like me, refuse to pick a side yet as it is way too early. the masses that matter most are part of this group due to A. cost (on both sides) and B. knowledge (again both sides, average joe doesn't get the full technical specs). there are far too many people happy with $5-7.50 DVDs they can get at walmart or target
it tells you something when proBR board member samsung decides to make a dual format player... this war is far from over if even a winner takes the high def movie crown. i expect some exclusive BR movie studios to go dual format. in business, it is only the smartest choice to make
now let's see how many sony fans hit the disagree button shall we? :P

12.3 - 12.1
There’s a lot of evidence that makes it easy—as the Blu-ray supporters have been doing for months—to declare the war all but done, with Blu-ray as the winner: Blu-ray is outselling HD DVD software; Blu-ray players are on the move to collectively outsell HD DVD players and most blockbuster titles in Q4 will be available on Blu-ray.
But while Blu-ray may be pulling ahead, it’s by nowhere enough to kill HD DVD, which with a third or so of the market, is far from on the ropes.
Watch the Q4 news to see how many of the new records set are by Blu-ray titles alone, and how many come from Warner or Paramount, which support both formats.
All that said, internationally Blu-ray enjoys a wider margin of close to 3:1 over HD DVD. In its report of first-half home entertainment sales internationally, research concern Media Control GfK International shows consumers outside the U.S. bought about 650,000 units of Blu-ray software, valued at more than $23 million, with HD DVD selling just around 240,000 units valued at about $8.5 million in the first half.

14 - While I do agree that Blu-Ray is outselling HD DVD...
I also recognize the fact that it should be selling 10 times as many discs as HD DVD discs. Afterall, they outnumber total players, including the PS3, by more than 10:1. Because of this fact alone, you have to realize that most people who buy a PS3 are not buying Blu-Ray movies. When you only sell twice as many movies with 10 times as many players, there is a lack of confidence and/or care for Blu-Ray.
Just wait until this Christmas and see how things shake out. If the Blu-Ray players don't get down to $300, they are going to have problems handling a sub $200 HD DVD player. While I think that both have room for growth, HD DVD will be the one to beat this Christmas - especially if Amazon.com keeps on with their incentives to buy HD DVD. Just look at the stand alone player sales rank on the site - HD DVD is stomping Blu-Ray in that regard. This war is far from over, and as stated before, HD DVD has done this technology the right way from day one. This will ultimately bump the price up more for Blu-Ray movies.
I think that Blu-Ray's major problem lies in the price of its players, but more so, its movies. When Joe Schmoe walks into Best Buy this Christmas and sees the same movie on both formats, but $5 cheaper on HD DVD, and the HD DVD player for $100-$150 cheaper, he is more inclined to pickup HD DVD. Some HD DVD movies cost more due to being a combo format and I know some of you Sony guys on here will chime in and say this makes HD DVD more expensive, hold your breath - you are baltantly wrong. I have actually seen posts by fanboys on here saying that HD DVD movies cost more than Blu-Ray movies. "300" does, and maybe 1 or 2 more at best. For the most part, BDs cost significantly more. This Christmas will have a huge impact on both formats - one for better and one for worse.

14.4 - i'll agree...
but your almost right on everything
in general when not on sale HD DVD disks aren't $5 cheaper than BR. some are, others are the same, and the ones that are double pressed with DVD on the other side tend to cost a tad more, not significant but a tad. really depends on the movie though cuz it could go either way. also BR does cost more for the studio to press out but it isn't as much as you think, more like 5-10 cents per disk when compared to a double pressed HD DVD / DVD disk. also only 13% of ps3 owners use their systems as BR players. see how many sony fanboys here own more than 5 movies, i bet you hardly any. just trying to correct ya buddy but i do agree, this xmas we will see where the market is and reason why this format war is far from over. the masses will always go towards the cheaper unit.
the other day i walked into BB and saw side by side BR and HD DVD displays where the HD DVD player's pricing was cheaper. the consumer will always buy the cheaper version of the 'same' thing. that and sony's unfortunate media history has already burned a sour image in their heads with flopped media formats; the latest being UMD movies. the average joe who bought psp's UMD movies, Betamax, MicroMV, MiniDisc, HiFD, SACD, Memory Stick, Digital8, etc etc will always remember how fast the media failed and if you made any significant investment in them you wouldn't want to gamble again. remember for it's time the most famous, Betamax, was far superior to the competition yet failed. nothing's wrong with innovation even if powered by greed but they just seem to not know how to negotiate with competition by trying to win the public's approval on said media. i personally feel if a winner were to happen as of NOW it would be BR but history has a tendency of repeating itself
let me end with i thought that walmart & target were promoting BR but would still carry HD DVD disks and their players. maybe i missed something?

18 - Wow
You guys claiming Target won't sell them are wrong. Target will carry HD DVD, but they have a deal worked out with sony to provide in-store advertising for Blu-Ray.
Also, Wal-Mart has made no official announcement, so throw that statement right back into the crap-heap. I own a business, and I'll be completely honest here, and if you disagree, then no offense, but you're an idiot:
Stores will sell HD DVD if the price is right and people demand to buy them! If there is a standalone HD DVD player for $200 this Christmas, look for Wal-Mart and Target to advertise the hell out of that. If they don't carry them, then they will lose all of that business to Best Buy and Circuit City. Business is not about loyalty - it is about making money and getting customers into their stores. If a $200 HD DVD player will get this task accomplished, then Wal-Mart will carry it as well as Target, or else they will be making a big mistake.
I am truly amazed/appauled at the outright fanboyish behavior and made up statments and complete bogus stuff that comes out of some of your guys mouths. Many of you have some sense, but many of you are complete morons. I bet you would protect Sony like it was your mother. Take a bullet for it if you had to? Jesus, it's just a movie format war guys. It is not a real war - people are not dying. There is no need to have some kind of a made up sense of pride in either format. You Blu-Ray guys never cease to amaze me. Now, let me get my 1500 disagrees by the "underground Blu-Ray is my God" clan.

That $200 HD-DVD player only displays up to 720p-1080i. 720p is still a great resolution but when all other players output 1080p and when movies are mastered in 1080p then those customers are getting ripped off. Here's the link for that player:
