Bungie: So Our Game's Called Halo...

urk of Bungie writes:

"Ten years ago to the day. July 21st, 1999. Macworld, New York.

Apple's iCEO Steve Jobs yields the stage for a brief but soon to be memorable moment to Bungie co-founder Jason Jones. Jones, looking a bit nervous, steps into the fore, shakes Jobs' hand and begins quite simply:

"So our game's called Halo...""

It's kinda fun to speculate what could have happened had Halo stayed an Apple exclusive.

My mind can't even process such madness. Such an act would break the balance of natural order causing a rift to open up in mid air.

I don't think MS would be in the console business if it stayed with Apple. I think PC gaming would be much better, and the console market wouldn't be as flooded with fps's.

The scenario is totally different.

Halo wouldn't be as big as it is if they stayed with Apple. It probably would have stayed just another RTS across PCs and Macs. Apple wasn't putting out a console and Bungie wouldn't have had to change the genre for them.

But MS was gambling on a new console and Bungie threw in the pot. Against all odds, they beat the house. Congrats to that. That is true entrepreneurship.

However considering i was in middle school when it came out most matches ended with us yelling curse words at eachother when we got killed and subsequently getting my friends parents pissed at us. Ahh good times, good times.

6.1 - Isn't that obvious?
Because Microsoft throw at them a sh*t truck load of money.. lol j/k

Halo ended up with Microsoft because in that time Microsoft was about to release the Xbox console and they bought Bungie Studios and with it the Halo Franchise for the console purposes..

Mmm.. I guess I wasn't joking after all :P

... and to add what you just said. MS saw the talent that their competitors didn't see so they made a wise choice to purchase a franchise that today is iconic.

@ IdleLeeSiuLung

To add to that, you know the competition is kicking themselves squarely in the arse for it too. One title single handedly keeping the Xbox afloat last gen. Great job Bungie for creating such a wonderful universe, great job MS for recognizing the potential of the product and great job to all the Halo fans out there for supporting the best console shooter series to date.

but you forget KOTOR, NG, Jet Set Radio, Forza, Fable and Jade Empire. All I believe are exclusives.

None that are as iconic as Halo, but then again other than Mario (and maybe Sonic) I can't think of any other....

Although I like Halo a lot and looking forward to Halo ODST, I though CoD4 is the best console FPS to date.

I agree with you there. Of the other titles you mentioned, I have only played NG.(Master Ninja thank you very much.) I bought KOTOR and Jade Empire but never got around to playing them, but I will get to them at some point.

I remember buying Halo Combat Evolved for the PC. I had no idea how addicting the online was. I however did not play Halo 2 as I was a PC gamer at the time and the Vista port came out long after I stopped gaming on my PC. And moved on to my Xbox 360 thus going on to play Halo 3. I can honestly say I can never repay Bungie for all the great years of gaming they gave me.

I recently checked and Halo 1 on the PC is still amazingly active with a lot of players. This franchise is so powerful.

Do you still have your product key for Halo PC? IF you do you should keep it. It sounds like Bungie is going to be doing something with it.

14 - Unbelievable!
Bungie deserves earned the credit and respect from millions around the world. Halo 3 still selling in hundred thousands of numbers a week. Despite Assassins 2, CoD MW2, Marvel, GTA DLC and some other games I'll be getting this year, ODST is in my top list. I estimate at least 1 million copies sold within two weeks.

I like how everything remotely awesome about Halo is in cutscenes or was never in the actual game. Halo is media trash that everyone sells out to. It is a good game, but aside from the very first one it doesn't really garner more than an 8. I know absolutely no one will agree with me, but Halo is crazy overrated.

However I do congratulate Bungie. They made a pretty good series and hopefully with ODST they'll improve it more.

The last level in the first and third halo game are all epic to the max. Nothing, nothing beats a race to last remaining pelican before the destruction of the alpha ring/the arch as the world crumbles around you and hundred upon hundred of flood try to kill you.

Or the first time you face the flood.

or when you face the prophet.

or the first time you get to see the flood actually transform a person in real-time.

or when you get the chance to fight with hunters on your side

or when you fight the scarab and it blows up in all that hd glory.

or when you hijack your first vehicle and spin around and splatter him.

or when 343 has all the sentries targeting you and all of a sudden it's 3 different races trying to kill you.

or the third last level of halo ce when all the flood and covenant and the sentries are trying to kill you as you get back to the amber clad, and the music kicks in and you're like "I can do this" and you start running and gunning like mad, pumping round after round into everything that moves even though hordes upon hordes of covenant and flood are shooting at swinging at you. You're shotgun's blasting and all you're hearing is that epic music cheering you on to kill everything, even though it's like 1 vs 50.

or the time you're like "I wonder if I could do an banshee to banshee hijack* and you pull it off.

Damn, i could keep going with all the awesomeness.

Xi, well define what you mean by not destroyed. i have read all the books, so don't hold back.

edit;

ok, let me refraise it............spoiler......... .......

Reach was not destroyed per say, but but nearly all the UNSC forces were wiped out. part of the planet was " glassed " and part of it was left for a particular reason by the Cov. i don't want to go into anymore for the sake of those who don't know.. but if i have got it wrong feel free to message me.

Xi - 155 days 15 hours ago
16.4 - yeah.
that's right, but reach doesn't get "destroyed" like the arch and the original halo did. It gets partially glassed though while the spartans are still on the ground, and I don't want to spoil it.
Shut this user up Let user speak
Another One - 155 days 15 hours ago
16.5 - You can spoil it
I can almost guarantee it wont follow the story of the books. There are a couple stories that don't get told in the book and you can bet that this game will cover those aspects. (i.e. the defense of the reactor complex) We know the reactor complex falls but we never really witness that part of the story. And who knows what happens to that particular group of Spartans after the reactors fall. Hell, we don't even know who those Spartans were or anything about them. There's a lot of story that can be told without directly pulling a story from the books.

@ Another One

i think your wright. i don't think the game of reach is going to follow the story of what happened in the books. I am sure it will tell the events from an angle we have not heard yet... but i still don't want to spoil it.

anyone who really, really loves halo should read the books. to be honest i am not a book person at all. i never read any of the harry potter books or anything else you can think of for that matter. however, the halo books should be read if your a fan of the game and they really are enjoyable.

That's the thing. I am a huge book person, but what I've always been worried about is that the Halo books, "fall of reach, etc..." will be the equivalent of a video game movie. A friend let me borrow them one time years ago...(I still have them...shhhh, lol!) but I've always been too busy reading other stuff...Dan simmons, Donaldson, Jordan etc to read them. Are they really that good?
