Dragon Quest IX Definitely Coming 11th of July

Gaming Union writes "Dragon Quest IX has been nothing but a catalogue of errors for Square Enix, as the game was initially planned for release in 2007. Despite this, here we are in mid-2009 and the game still hasn't been released.

Most recently, the game was officially penned in for the 28th of March, 2009, after Square Enix unveiled the release date at the end of a trailer. However they then had to go against that, and on the 12th of February, informed the general public that the game would be delayed until the 11th of July, 2009."

Very cool. Glad it's finally going to show it's wonderful face to the crowd. Now lets see that means one more year for the US and another year for EU...? :(

Well the two year delay was because of a complete overhaul as they initially planned to move away from DQ's roots but fans protested. I think that actually shows who's more important as they listen to the DQ fans.

The delay of a few months was to get rid of some bugs because they said it wouldn't be fair on the consumer. Level 5 should get a share of the blame too.

But wooo, DQIX!!!!

It's a double edged sword really. Square Enix will probably think twice about doing any major innovations now with Dragon Quest, as they'll be worried about losing their audience.

It sets a dangerous precedent.

Well they have the Final Fantasy franchise to play around with which they do. You have to keep one of the games to stay true to it's roots and Dragon Quest has been doing that since the very first game. So many similarities from the 1st to the 8th and I'm sure they are still very present into this iteration. Not all games need to evolve and Dragon Quest is such a game.

Yes, but the move to 3rd person was quite well recieved so they might try a few changes here and there. After all they are adding multiplayer!

It's the same with FF as well though, Square Enix are always stuck between those who want it to stay the same and those who want something new. Turn Based vs Real Time is the core of the argument for both franchises though it seems.

I personally prefer turn based as it seems turn based games are in the minority.

4 - Not on a console :(
I'm a little disappointed that the next real sequel (not a spin off) following the excellent DQ VIII will only be on an handheld and not on a console. A portable, either the DS or PSP, just can't support the same experience as modern console games. I know gameplay might still be good but it would have been even better on a console.

Wrong. I think that you don't have an handheld and never played Crisis Core (psp) or Dragon Quest V (DS).

Hisiru it's just like PC gamers looking down on consoles. A lot of console gamers look down on handhelds. :( and just like PC gamers the dislike has no bearing on anything

@4.1 Thanks, at least they are not abandoning consoles

@4.2 I have a DS and a PSP and did enjoy Crisis Core. However I couldn't say with a straight face that a game like Crisis Core can compare with a full fledged console version, like FFXIII. I think it is ok to make spinoffs of major franchise on handhelds (like Daxter for the PSP, like Crisis Core which you mentioned, like Metal Gear Portable Ops, Dragon Quest Monsters, Dragon Quest Heroes, etc.) but to take the core of a major console franchise on a portable is not the preferred choice if you also own consoles and are used to the console versions.

That being said, if a developper has the resources to do both handheld and console versions, then it is even better.

I hear you but at the same sense I feel handhelds have come a long ways this gen and can support the main stays in the franchised world. It will always be a heaven for spin offs and classic gameplay type stuff but with how many have them and use them daily it's almost screaming for some bigger game titles.

Plus we can't forget in the entire history of Dragon Quest it went to the system with the most sold. NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, and now the obvious choice is the DS. Just how it works sometimes.

Also like Pizza said DQX will be back in action in console form :)

@4.5 I hear you too. There is no arguing that it was a decision made on market size ($$$) but as a gamer who really enjoyed DQVIII, I was expecting the next sequel to at least be equal or surpass it. Notice also how all the previous platform listed were... consoles which mean those games were made on top platform of their time. I was in the end just voicing my preference, it doesn't change anything, I just hope it won't take too long for DQ X to get made and localized (which it might).

Bubble up for the intelligent discussion.

I disagree with the sentiment that it should "Surpass" DQVIII because DQ has never been about spectacle. It's only since been full 3D since VIII!

In fact I'd say it's one of the reasons they're putting it on the DS. They probably don't want people to obsess over the looks of the game when it's the narrative that's important.

Bubbles for you too :) yeah always fun to get into a good conversation.

The thing with it also being on the higher platform the only exception to that is DQVIII. For when VII came out on the PS1 it was lambasted in the US for pretty much using the same engine from the SNES! DQ was never a pusher on the technical point only in terms of story, characters, and refined combat. DQI-IV looked pretty much the same as did V-VII. From the screens they have shown Level 5 is producing some pretty good cell shading and design from VIII to the DS which is pretty amazing in it's own right.

Yes X will be more close to the point of VIII and I too hope it comes soon lol even though I still need to play IX ;)

Yer, this is the Japanese date. Not the western one.

Plus DQ isn't very popular in the west.

In something completely underrated this might really help the DSi because Dragon Quest Wars is being released on the DSiware about the same time(I think). It'd be cool if having DQ Wars on your DSi gave you a bonus.

@V: 2010 would be a safe bet. DQ can take around a year to reach the west.

Godmars290 - 206 days 6 hours ago
6.3 - Still,
Its not like the game doesn't have enough Western fans that it would be totally worthless to announce it then. And unless TGS is in July, it would be the perfect excuse to start a media blitz in Japan.

And really, is the West not getting the game? Is the Western version coming out in 2010?

I think your best bet would be DQVII on the PSN from the ps1 classic section. IX is just coming out and X is just starting to be worked on but the time XI comes around the next round of consoles will probably be out.

7.2 - Um, no.
Besides the fact that unlike the FF franchise which is known for evolving its hardly changed since its NES days, Square doesn't want to risk such a cash-cow title on a console they're less than confident in.

Same case with the 360. MS couldn't pay them enough vs what they'd lose if it didn't sell.
