iPhone on track to dominate handheld gaming

Pocket Gamer writes: "It's no secret that iPhone has turned the mobile phone industry on its head, sliding past its smartphone rivals with its sexy design. We know Apple has opened a new chapter in mobile technology, but the real story behind this is how the iPhone is quietly taking over pocket gaming."

LAUGHING! This is just plain funny. The iPhone with no other interface than simple motion control and a touch screen! Ooh wait virtual buttons on its' already limited screen real estate! WIN! LOL!!! What a f*ckin joke. Apple should stick to neat PCs, iPods and phones but please do not for a minute think that the iPhone will garner any serious space in handheld/portable gaming. kthxbye

I agree. I just don't see why people think it's going to be this revolutionary thing.

I know plenty of people with iPhones and none of them would even consider buying games, because they're so rubbish. Is there potential? Perhaps, but by the time that potential is realised, one of the actual gaming hardware companies will have already produced something which beats it.

Yeah, I have an iPod Touch (thanks MS Live cashback), but I much prefer my PSP or DS Lite for playing most games. My biggest gripe with the iTouch, which is also its biggest selling point, is the lack of buttons.

"Even if only a third of that 100 million can be attributed to games (a reasonable assumption given that a majority of the applications in the store are games), that's 33 million games downloaded since July – a full third of the total number of PSP games sold since December 2004."

I really take editorials based on groundless assumptions seriously. Even if he is right, he should what kinds of software most people download. They are usually free widgets and cheap utilities, not full priced games. From my personal experience, most people just download a cheap promising clone of some 2D game to try it out.

3 - i don't think so...
sure, tons of developers are flocking to the iphone to make games on...but the majority of the games(mostly all of them) are cheaply made and just plain rubbish in quality
for me, this- quantity>quality isn't always the indication that the future of iphone gaming will be any good

5 - sh*t is disgusting
for gaming, all the wack a$$ games are the same, they either use accelerometer controls or touch controls, unless they plan on releasing a controller add-on all these "hype it up until people believe"campaigns need to stop, truth be told that as a mobile entertainment device for media the ipod/iphone is chock full of awesomeness, but as a mobile gaming console...mmmm....not so much

so i want everybody who owns anything else that can game to point your finger and laugh at apple for such blatant propaganda

peace and game on

9 - consider it
It may not replace hardcore gamers handheld but the proportion of cell phone users to handheld gamers is weighted in the phones favor. No one ever considers that we (real gamers) are becoming the minority as far as gamer types go (casual/phone/ middle aged women/senior citizens, etc.). Developers cane easily sell millions of games on these devices combined with ease of purchase/download on the go as well as these games are coded in days not months or years makes for a very convincing pitch to game developers. Do not be surprised to see phones take over for the majority of games played on handhelds. Think about what I am saying becuase I am not sure I am getting out what I am thinking here. I am not saying they will be good games just good business.

Solitaire is the most played video game of all time ( http://www.slate.com/id/219... ). Hardcore gamers have never been the majority, we've just historically been the easiest to target. Problem now is install bases of devices like iPhone/iPod Touch & Wii are calling attention to where the real money is to be made. I doubt it will be long before developers begin questioning whether another multi-million dollar project targeted toward an increasingly fickle hardcore market is worth the risk when Carnival Games 2 can be cranked out in 6 months for less than $250,000 & a few cases of Mountain Dew.

11 - Lets see...
as a gamer who is also a pleased Verizon customer....am I willing to leave them behind so that I can purchase this phone for games? Simply ignorance........unless the iPhone is going to become available to every cellphone provider, as well as parents being okay with purchasing this phone for kids of all ages.........I think common sense makes this argument null and void.

The lack of objectivity on this site is mind boggling. For the casual gamers who outnumber us by several BILLION, games like Minesweeper, Solitaire & Tetris are more than enough. If you think games that cater to the majority of gamers actually require buttons, give Solitaire or Tetris on an iPhone/iPod Touch a try. I'm sure you'll be quite surprised at what can be done without buttons.

12.1 - Well then I guess...
it depends on how you define "dominate" and "handheld gaming"....cause I would not consider people playing Minesweeper, Tetris & Solitaire on the iphone as dominating dedicated systems such as the DS and PSP. To continue, is dominating based on how many games are purchased.......or how many hours logged?
