GameSpot: Chrono Trigger Review

Chrono Trigger is a fantastic synthesis of excellent storytelling, game design, music, and gameplay that has withstood the test of time and should be considered required playing for any fan of role-playing games. Though its extra content is hit or miss and it's essentially a direct port of a game released 13 years ago, the DS version is easily the definitive edition of this masterpiece, regardless of whether Chrono Trigger is one of those games you've only ever heard of before or you're a dedicated fan who has played through it dozens of times.

2.5 - still the best jrpg
xenogears is nowhere near as fun to play as ct, plus it had a pretty lame ending. Xenogears was really good, but ct is just that much better.

I guess we can agree to disagree. While Xenogears was a stellar game; Chrono Trigger has more memorial moments and better story.

I'm all about some Xenogears so I understand where your coming from Chrono was good but Xenogears is my all time favorite rpg hands down. I've got two copies one still sealed just to have one forever. I actually still play Xenogears almost daily an I have it on my psp. I couldn't help myself SquareSoft just isn't showing the Xenogears love an if they did it would probably be for the ds so I had to take it apon myself to be able to play Xenogears anywhere. Also lets not forget suikoden II an FFVIII also now for my psp :) they won't give it to me so I had to resort to other measures to play pure epicness on the go.

I honestly think Xenogears was too deep for some people.

This game caused me to be aware of things such as "nanomachines" and I even questioned my own existence at times.

This game is a gem and has a story that I find hard for most minds to compete with in terms of the depth of story and how they cleverly backtrack through multiple generations, with everyone eventually coming together in the present, to liberate man from man and ultimately machine.

I also remember it having some very nice plot-twists.

The whole organic/mechanical feel to the game was spot on too. I get goosebumps whenever I see flesh fused with machine.

Unsettling, interesting and... I have went off topic.
My only problem with Xenogears is that the last disc felt rushed... but I have done some digging and it seems SquareSoft had a deadline that Monolith needed to meet.(?)

$hitty score for Chrono Trigger. (9.8/10 imo)

11 - Wow great memories with this game
To me and many many rpg fans out there, this is truly the pinnacle of rpg gaming. The thing is that i first played this game around 2001 - which is long past the snes error. The game to me is a timeless gem. and will always remain one of the funnest gaming experience i have had including Ocarina of Time, FF7, FF6, Golden Eye, Smash bros for n64.
