Dragon Quest IX coming this year, FF Agito XIII might be cancelled

Square Enix held a shareholders meeting two days ago which discussed the financial status of the company during fiscal year 2008. Game Watch have posted an article that gives us more in-depth details on what was said:

- Wada says Dragon Quest IX is coming this fiscal year, but the game still doesn't have a release date. He also said the DS is a great choice for the game, and thinks it may sell up to 10 million copies.

- Wada says that due to 3 billion yen in losses, the company has cancelled a "revolutionary mobile development". The project is rumored to be Final Fantasy Agito XIII or Parasite Eve 3.

Hope the cancelled mobile game is Paraside Eve 3 so they can make the REAL Parasite Eve 3 for a future console not a darn mobile phone. Parasite Eve is the "Cinematic RPG" for Christ's sake.

4 - That's what they get
For taking their sweet old time and focusing on cheap handheld games rather than taking the momentum they had in 2006 and running with it into the next-gen of gaming.

I don't feel sorry for them at all. Their approach was anti-gamer. They shoveled out a lot of crap the last 14 months or so on handhelds and the PS2 expecting the RPG fanbase to just eat it up. GOOD FOR YOU GAMERS that you didn't just buy into the mediocrity they kept giving you.

It's time for Square to own up and release what people want. FFXIII, FFVII remake, The Last Remnant, KH3. They could have devoted more resources to THESE projects and maybe even have them ready for this year. But, instead they tried to make a quick cash-in with crap and they got what they deserved.

I hope DQ 9 flops badly too. Who has ever heard of putting a sequel on an inferior machine? It just reeks of cheap cash in. Level 5 is developing it so I'm sure it will be above average but still gamers need to take a stand against crap like this.

Unfortunately it is a lot cheaper to make a ds game than a PS3 game. So while they may sell less copies, they will probably be able to make up the development costs a hell of a lot easier than on the current consoles.

Besides Dragon Quest isn't even that big here. The DQIX sales will probably be pretty bad, but it would be the same if it was on PS2/PS3 as well. Sure it has a decent following among RPG fans, but it is NOWHERE near what FF is. So why not put it on DS? It's all about money, DQIX will sell in Japan even if it was on the Sega Genesis, everywhere else, highly unlikely. Remember how well DQVIII sold? The answer is not too well, and that was WITH a FFXII demo.

actually dude DQ8 sold like crazy. Just not in western countries. Seriously though it sold millions in Japan alone. DQ actually closely rivals FF in japan. The only difference is FF is big world wide. Besides who gives a crap?? DQ8 was fantastic. I could really care less if its on the DS since I have one. As long as its good.

That was my point, DQ is huge in Japan, but outside Japan it is nothing spectacular. Which would be a reason to make the next one for a portable system.

I have no problem with it being on the DS, I think it is a really smart move actually. But Dragon Quest will never be the mainstream success here that Final Fantasy is.

DQ IX is going to sell insane and glad it's coming out to the DS. It has so many awesome rpgs it's a perfect home for the main series of Dragon Quest and Japan even likes that more then Final Fantasy so you know it's going to sell very well.

Glad they cancelled the moblie phone game.

I agree that It is most likely Parasite Eve 3 that is canceled and not Agito. However as much as it pains me to say it. If they did cancel Parasite eve for Mobile i doubt they will do a PS3 version as it would be more expensive and a eliminate the point of canceling the Mobile version. Sucks too cause I LOVE Parasite Eve It pissed me off that we never got a PS2 Parasite Eve the PS1 Parasite Eve games where awesome they just needed a bit of refinement in the combat area which could easily be done with Next gen.

Not necessarily. While the Console development costs would be much higher than development for a mobile platform I can honestly say with assurance that a console version would see a much higher return. Because, and lets be honest, the American and European markets don't really love the ideas of mobile phone main franchises and if PE3 had been made for a mobile phone the chance of it being released outside of Japan is nil.

Ashta is quite right on this. Remember when Squeenix announced FF7 Before Crisis. Japan ate it up with an enourmous spoon. Square said it was coming next to Europe and America...uhhh yeah that was 2004. Just where is that game???

Even though our wireless networks are beginning to approach Japans 2004 capabilities, this game is still nowhere near in sight. SE rightly realized that if they try to release ANY major franchise outside of Japan on cell phones, they will FAIL hardcore. People in the West just aren't as interested in playing super in depth games like this en-mass on mobile. If they could figure how to bring these things to a handheld, though....

True. However Parasite eve has never been one of Squares biggest franchises. Sure the games where great and there are hardcore fans that love the series however PE wasn't even really on the level of SE's other property's. That's most likely the reason we never got a PS2 version. So it still seems to me that it is unlikely that we will see a PS3 version. Maybe a PSP version even then I'm doubtful. I would love to be proven wrong though because as i said I love PE.

I mean geez, Insomniac is a small team and they still were manage to bring 3 games in the span of 2 years for the ps3, and this is supposingly the hardest system to dev for. Damn my hope for FF13 keep fading slowly, im starting to be more hyped about White Knight Story. I cant believe most of there focus is on the ds. They got millions of fans waiting for FF13 and there over here thinking of the ds. Keep taking your time so u can lose more money. :)

Regardless of whichever project gets canceled, its development had better get shifted to DS. If it's really so revolutionary, I would think it's better on a system with a well-established user base and proven hardware, rather than something as model-specific and finicky as the cell-phone.

Why SE is emphasizing the mobile market so heavily in the first place is beyond me; isn't the game-and-go market the reason why handheld consoles exist in the first place?

If what was posted on Kotaku is right. Then it is more likely the cancellation is really Agito. It says something about the canceled game having plans to connect to the console. Agito was planned to do that awhile ago and there was never any talk of that for PE3.
